#57672, "RE: Characters holding race/class only gear."
|
So in response to the other forum I had a thought. Yes, I don't play anymore but I still love the game and if I have a thought I want to share it.
The idea is simple. Make it so limited gear that is class/race specific crumbles after 24 hours real life time if the character holding it is not that class/race.
Further, if they are that class/race but don't wear or use it for a certain amount of time, say 48-72 hours real life time, then it crumbles.
Actual values could vary, but when people say they are doing others a favor by hoarding stuff so it can't be used in PK... That's not right.
Though, to be honest I've always been in favor or requiring users to have CF accounts like in other muds/games and they can only have a limited number, probably 2, of characters created at a time. Just my opinion! I recently checked out another game and they have immexp for the account itself which let's player play special classes or races. Kinda cool.

If someone wants to hoard something they can't use, taking up valuable inventory/weight space. They should be allowed to. You aren't entitled to your race/class only gear. If you were, there would be no limits on it.

Really holding onto race-only equipment is something a powergamer does to keep it out of the hands of someone that can use it. I don't think that is fun in any way.
I would totally be for items crumbling if not used(worn) by a race/align that can use them after a certain period of time. This would at least make them acquire it again to keep it out of the hands of someone that can use it. 48-72 hours would give them lots of time to play keepaway while making it so they have some effort to maintain that.
We are talking only about things that particular character cannot ever use. So I think this would just affect powergamers being lame.
Your arguments as to the point of limits is entirely off base. The point of limits is to make sure the whole game is not overflowing with that particular piece of gear. I doubt it is so that people that cannot use it can hoard it. While this is a possibility currently, and playing keep away can be an IC thing. Powergamers just trying to one up someone by hoarding race-only gear is entirely OOC and lame.

Lots of things are not fun in CF. Dying, looting, leveling, and many more are all things that someone, somewhere has complained is not fun.

Wearing an item isn't the only way to use an item. Maybe I'm holding it for an ally. Maybe I'm holding it to sell it. Maybe I'm holding it for trade. Maybe I'm even trying to hold it ransom. Thanks for taking away multiple opportunities for me to interact with other players just because it's not fun that you can't have "your" piece of gear.
>We are talking only about things that particular character >cannot ever use. So I think this would just affect >powergamers being lame.
I'm not aware of a single item that no character can use in some way. However, I'm far from knowing every item in CF, so maybe there is something somewhere. That sad, if you can hold it in your inventory then it can have some value.

I think you're wrong about the point of limits. Yes, it serves that purpose, but it's far more important purpose (imo) is to increase VALUE of said items. Just because an item is race/class/whatever-only and I can't use it directly doesn't mean I can't also find some value in it.
Like you said, anti-hoarding code already exists. Tweak it all you want, but certainly there need be no special consideration for class/race-only equipment. The idea that I can't hold onto something just because it's anti-me is dumb.

I get what you are saying. The point is, I view purposefully hoarding items for OOC benefit as lame. I'm totally fine if you have a valid RP reason for taking an item from someone as like a PK reminder. I think the devil is in the details as far as how to tweak the anti-hoarding code to address this without killing RP opportunities.
Also, you said I was wrong, but what you said...doesn't that make us both right? Not that I agree with your view of the purpose of limits. But I can see how you get there. Anyway, got to go.

Thanks. I'm glad we agree there is other than mechanical reasons to hold an item that is anti-me and that flat out poofing them is not a good measure for dealing with it.

Now for the game, I'll make first move:
No. We are not both right. Mine is right and yours is a happy coincidence. Both of me is right, but both of us is definitely not right.

Personally, I like this idea.
I also like the idea that we do more policing of other limited things like mino/azure/seasonal slots so that people who actually want to play them get to play.

Unless I am mistaken, none of what you mentioned is cheating. The hoard code is there to deal with such idleness.

The guy power ranking a conjie to guild sit and locate objects for months (if that's true), so to then log on a different character to acquire those objects, is pretty clearly cheating. The conjie wasn't hording gear, he was a free use locate spell to be used for the benefit of other characters that don't have it.
Multi-charring is ALSO any sharing of Out Of Character (OOC) information or equipment with another character you are also play on CF. (there is a typo in the helpfile I just noticed there, either remove the are or add the -ing to play)
Likewise, your characters should never help one another in any way.
So yeah, pretty clear cheating.

It's a log bow to draw to go from:
"Most people don't roll characters, rank them to hero, and them have them locate/collect gear that sits in a guild for months at a time."
to
"The guy power ranking a conjie to guild sit and locate objects for months (if that's true), so to then log on a different character to acquire those objects, is pretty clearly cheating"
I'd like to know why Valg thought it necessary to publicly slur a group of players. Perpetuating a stereotype is childish.
