#50342, "Rangers out of wilderness (follow up on Iklahn's comment)"
|
I would like to follow up on a comment made by Iklahn. I quote "Bedouin is fine. You left out probably the biggest perk of being Bedouin: You fight basically the same in civilized as you do in wilderness."
1/ Other than the loss of wilderness familiarity (unless fighting shapeshifters) and the obvious lack of camo/ambush/snare, how else exactly are the rangers disadvantaged by fighting say in the city of Galadon? In particular, are their base defense/offense affected (beyond loss of wilderness familiarity)?
2/ On the comment by Iklahn above, what makes bedouins different from other rangers when fighting in civilized terrain?
Thank you in advance.

Out of order to flow a bit better.
2. You can dervish dance anywhere. You already lost snare and entangle, so you don't miss them. I think wasps work in town as well.
1. Base defense os not affected. Use haste and aura/shield and you might be ok. However, your lagging skills (bearcharge and savage blow) are not gonna lag much if at all, so your tactics come done to dirt/disarm serpentstrike/pugil.
Additionally, rangers I have been afraid of are ones I don't know are around. If I kow they are around, I am usually ready.

The way to fight non-explorer rangers in civilized areas is to recognize that they are basically non-specialized warriors that are slightly gimped at higher levels (no-fourth attack, no-enhanced reactions) but with talismans and preps.
Against a fully prepped warrior in civilized areas you'll mostly lose unless you are really well geared and really lucky. Any consistent success relies on catching un-prepped or un-lucky folks. A few attacks like backrake and the ranger weapons can really be your friend when they work. I wouldn't waste time with bear charge in town unless you didn't have anything else to do.
It's a different story in the wilds of course.

I don't know, when it comes to killing people as a ranger solo I always needed some of the following (keep in mind I've never played a giant ranger) :
1) Waylay or ambush. 2) Call lightning. 3) Snare (or net).
Entangle has never gotten me a hero kill because people word or teleport and the only cabal it'd be good against (ragers) have spellbane. Bearcharge has never been good for me because every single one of my rangers was human or felar. Basically aside from catching them in a norecall area already, catching them with a fast waylay that killed them outright after they fled at half health or same with a fast call lightning is probably the basic means of me killing them.
Considering you can't do call lightning indoors or ambush/waylay in civilized, I just can't see them being any good in civilized territory. Haste and aura by themselves only barely make up for loss of wilderness familiarity and dervish dance without any lag just doesn't strike me as something that will kill people who use wimpy and escape potions.
In short, rangers are horrible outside of the wilderness regardless of what spec you go with (just my opinion) - they'll always be like a really gimpy warrior without having access to their ranger abilities.
