The Bottomless Alcove
As you begin to step into the alcove, the stone floor abruptly gives way
to nothing but air. You feel confused for a moment in the darkness as
the air whips by your face, but it only lasts a moment.

The stone floor abruptly gives way to nothing but air.
You feel confused for a moment in the darkness as the air whips by your face.
The crushing pain lasts only a moment.

You have been KILLED!
You feel less resistant to poison.
You have died, but the Carrion Fields are not finished with you yet!
Your soul is returned to the realms in the form of a ghost.
You will return to your corporeal state in a short while.
Be careful, for even a ghost should fear some dangers!

When under the affect of "fly" you are more like... Hovering.

I see it like this for it to make sense:

Under controlled circumstances I can hover over surfaces that I normally couldn't, water, gel, quicksand etc. (In the past even Clouds in a few places.)

But, I cannot fly over bottomless clefts etc, if I try to, I'll fall, and the force of the fall is greater than the force the hovering can resist.

Did my ESL rant make any sense at all?

Btw, there are plenty of places like the ones you describe above. Both in old areas and in newer areas. It is not a design flaw I'm pretty sure of.

Always shoot first and then call whatever you hit the target.

For example, broken floors. There's a few places in which hovering will save you from falling through these.

I'm guessing it's something to do with weight distribution over a larger area while hovering but magic did it. Who cares.

...though I'd have a hard time imagining trying to fly in close quarters as an arial. Perhaps just short flaps here and then - good to avoid trips, but not providing enough support when there's completely no floor.

inh flight evokes coordination between wings and legs to keep them light on their feet, as opposed to actively hovering.

There's no way something the size of an arial could hover like a hummingbird, for example, without magic.

Still wish we could get them in the skies above thera for limited times, though.

Maybe like 25 lb weight restriction to do it. Or maybe just let them be able to carry two coconuts.
