Would Zulg and Co. be okay with this, a lot of players have seemed okay with the idea on unofficials.

I don't think this somehow makes gnomes and svirfs less powerful, or bards. Mages get identify and as soon as they do it's full info regardless of spell %.

I think this would help mainly newbies, who might not manage to have enough coins for Alduk all the time, and it's more convenient. It hardly bothers vets, and who knows, they might use it sometimes too.

I'm not saying this is a big deal, but it seems like a little thing that might make knowing basic stuff easier for new players, and not really hurting anyone else.

If this is really hard to code, for some reason, then I get that's a problem.

Thoughts?

Ow! My ovaries!

What if guildmasters would ID guild-appropriate gear for free?

Do it after the fashion of Alduk, but only gear suitable for their class.

Also maybe give all classes lore. Why can't a mage id an item by looking at it as well as a warrior?

Sure, they won't use it after fifteen, but it gives them something. And it makes the gnome lore bonus worthwhile, which it isn't right now except for all of the non-existant gnome melee class characters.

On that note, I wouldn't mind seeing more Alduk-like NPCs scattered about.

I would also be with class-specific use of the Examine command providing players with Identify data for mundane items. A warrior, for example, should be able to Examine a chainmail shirt and know its armor value but not have the first clue what a potion does just by looking at it.

Just pitch my idea like it's your own. Dirty idea thief.

(as if the idea isn't obvious)

The point of a warrior not knowing what a potion does reminds me of something that has bothered me greatly in exploring CF. No snake oil salesman throughout history has sold random bottles of liquid without advertising their properties, rightly or wrongly. So why would 99% of the shops in Thera sell bottles/scrolls/wands/pills of random effect without some advertisement to their use? I completely understand wanting to keep some mystery to the game, but if we're talking about a lore revamp any chance of getting the ability to lore items before purchasing them? This only hurts new players and we'd still have to find the shop to be able to use the ability.

However, doesn't the browse command already do this? I don't know how often you get accurate information from it, but we are speaking snake oil salesmen heh.

Shopkeepers should definitely know/share what they know about their own items though, for sure.
