#47880, "Salmt Hijack Derailed"
Edited on Wed 05-Dec-12 11:45 AM

EDIT to add: This is a response to Akresius post on Salmt's death thread.

>Given the amount of vitriol that certain members of the
>playerbase spew in her direction, I have to honestly ask: are
>you surprised she took what you said personally?

I have to honestly answer: Yes, I am surprised anyone would take it personally. Vitriol is a staple of "that" community and anyone who has played more than a year and still takes it seriously probably needs a reality check or needs to never type in their address bar www.qhcf.net. AFAIK most of us are adults who should know better than to let anonymous internet personas get under our skin.

That's all said looking past the irrelevancy of any connection made between the jaded chumps at Dios and a character acting his part in game. I always advocate for keeping OOC and IC separate. Some people can't do that, those people shouldn't be immortals. I'm not saying that is what happened here or that Baer is one of these people as clearly we don't have the context of the immortal comments in the first place. Context is king.

>I mean, you now have a post on Dioxides's advocating "setting
>the bar higher" in regards to being as insulting as possible.
>Tongue-in-cheek or not, how would you expect her to take any
>future negative interaction she has with a character?

Tongue-in-cheek. That's the name of the game. It's one thing to accept heat from the "serious" players, but if you take what Matrik (me) says seriously... then I really can't help you.

>That she even bothers to continue interacting, handing out rewards, >and writing/reviewing new areas for the game is a testament to her
>patience toward a playerbase increasingly dominated by the
>loud voices of a malcontended minority.

Increasingly? I've been reading the forums for over five years now. Nothing has changed. It's a big bunch of children and we are playing a video game. She (and any of you) should not do what you do if you don't enjoy it. That includes dealing with the "petulant children" of Dios. I don't say that because I want anyone to leave, but because I will always advocate against people needlessly enduring emotional turmoil.

>It's almost comical how those select players complain over the
>slightest criticism of their character.

My particular post (which you commented about) had less to do with Salmt and more to do with Whiysdan. It's one thing to deal with rebel rousing peasants. It's another to deal with over-critical bosses on a volunteer staff. Again, hard to say without context, but bashing Whiysdan and his religion was the real burr in my side. She may not deserve much of what is thrown at her, but he certainly doesn't deserve what she threw at him.

As for "select players," please review my long history of arguing against immspiracy and generally defending immortal actions/reasoning. Maintaining a "it's their game" type of attitude.

>Salmt had no mechanical punsihments other than a negative title. He >did not lose xp, stats, virtues or empowerment. Salmt garnered
>some negative and somewhat harsh (IMHO) immortal comments, so
>does that make Salmt a failure? This is not directed at you,
>more to the crowd who have rallied to the cause, so to speak.

Salmt is the only one who can decide if his character was successful or not. The number of immortal punishments and rewards do not necessarily have any bearing on that. I would rather our immortals keep OOC and IC separate, but alas it's not something that can ever be managed. Not while both player-run and immortal-run cheat rings keep at it. In light of recent discoveries regarding these two aspects, it's very hard to really care about someone getting their (gender-neutral) panties in a twist. Meaning, it's quite clear that a select few immortals and a couple handfuls of players care nothing for upholding the spirit of the game.

>I don't want to hijack your good-bye thread any more than I
>already have. Good luck with your next.

I was so going to hijack it, but I'm a big softy.

First of all, RayBaer is the bomb.

Second of all, my most memorable Dios insult was when Vladamir told me he wished I would get a venereal disease and that my #### would fall off because I deleted one of his posts. I couldn't process the kind of human mind that would come up with an insult like that and then use it for something so meaningless and petty. It still amazes me. Since then it really has been hard to take Dios insults seriously although it is frustrating not being able to respond.

Third of all, the most disgusting role I ever read was by an Orc that grew up in a house made of #### with a clock that farted every hour. Whoever you are thanks for that enduring memory. No role can compare to that (please please please don't try).

As you can see, I do not proof read:

Nyomnyar was the only person to reside in this mansion, which resembled more of a conglomeration of huts thrown together. Despite this fact, he never felt alone. There was a presence in this hut that he could feel, a lurking entity that couldn't be seen. Nyomnyar always felt it was the house that was the manifestation of this entity.

The house would talk to him every hour on the hour. Somewhere within this mansion of huts, a place Nyomnyar had yet to find, lay a clock. This clock chimed according to what time it was, though the chimes had been grossly disfigured over the years of it standing. The noises spurt out more along the lines of flatulence than a clock chime. The house flatulated at him 3 times, letting him know it was 3 o'clock. The noise was loud enough to keep Nyomnyar from sleeping. He remembered thinking that the loquacious phantom clock would likely result in giving bad sleeping habits to Nyomnyar if he ever made it out.

When Nyomnyar was just a young orcling, his parents through him into this house and locked the doors. There was plenty of food to be found in the kitchens of this hut mansion, including all kinds of frozen rat kebobs. It wasn't until Nyomnyar learned how to use a fire that he actually got to taste them cooked.

As a young orc, Nyomnyar wasn't even aware that other beings existed, save for this one being called Shantley, who he often saw outside of the house (when the mist permitted it). They had even spoken once, yelling at each other through a closed window. Shantley called himself an Elf, as well as the grounds keeper for the mansion. For an unknown reason, Nyomnyar didn't like this man. There was an odd sense about this "elf." He was more of a fey being than of one in his right mind. His eyes were rolled back so that his pupils didn't show.

The clock strunk 11 disfigured chimes, which told Nyomnyar he ought to be off to bed. He couldn't count higher than 5, but he knew that a lot of chimes meant it was getting late.Stopping at the fountain in the main lobby, he decided to take a drink. Looking into his reflection, he saw a mishapen face staring back at him. In his reflection his saw his face smiling. The smile turned into more of a leer. Admiring his facial expression, Nyomnyar raised his hand to touch his face in order to feel the expression. It was at that moment that Nyomnyar realized he wasn't smiling. Though, there sat his reflection, grinning right back at him. His skull was grinning right at him. "Grinning skull think funny do?" muttered Nyomnyar as he walked away from the fountain, towards the place he liked to lay down and attempt to sleep the most.

While laying down, Nyomnyar found it difficult (as usual) to fall asleep. He'd get close to falling asleep, then the chimes would fart through his ears so that he couldn't get any rest. The flatulating clock resonated with his stomach, and his stomach began to growl a most demonic growl. He stood up, only to immediately hunch over. Nyomnyar's bowels began to explode, shooting his spine directly out of the threshold to his bum. The spine left, breaking all bones attached to it in the process. The pain was excruciating, and Nyomnyar was howling. With his spine gone, Nyomnyar fell to the ground, but his bowels persisted -- shooting out assorted organs. Nyomnyar passed out from the pain.

Upon waking up, Nyomnyar immediately grabbed his rear end to inspect the damage done. Oddly enough, there was no damage done. There wasn't and bones or blood in the room, either. Was it a dream? It couldn't have been. The pain was real. Though, there he was with spine, organs, and a butt that were all undamaged and in place. Terrified, Nyomnyar quickly ripped up bed sheets and wore them as a diaper. Nyomnyar wasn't entirely sure what happened, but he knew he didn't want it happening again.

Running out of his room and to the balustrade, Nyomnyar was stopped in his tracks. Down in the lobby, he saw Shantley. How could he possibly have made it inside? The evil house has ensured that everything stayed locked and impenetrable. Shantley was holding a long, sharp-tipped pike. His pupiless eyes gazed directly into Nyomnyar's. Shantley's presence made sense, now. The house had put Shantley under a spell. Nyomnyar knew what was about to happen. He ripped a baluster off of the blustrade and held it like a club, running down the stairs towards Shantley. The house began farting. This time, it was not to notify Nyomnyar of the time. The house was mocking him and trying to distract him. It was laughing at him.

Nyomnyar made quick work of Shantley, beating him to a pulp. He was consumed with rage, as the house continued to mock him. If the house wanted to continue to make farting noises at Nyomnyar, Nyomnyar figured he would fart right back at the house.

Bending over, Nyomnyar began stomping around in circles while flailing his arms wildly. With every step he took, he let loose an unnatural flatulence. The house tried to get louder, but Nyomnyar persisted, beginning to burp inbetween stomps to show the house what he was made of. After thirty minutes of this battle, the house stopped chiming. Nyomnyar stood upright and looked around. A creaking noise was heard. Nyomnyar looked to the front of the house to see that the door had opened. The house was admitting defeat, and letting him freely leave.

After a very extensive walk along a misty road, our hero ends up at a fork in the road. After picking up the fork, he threw it into the grass alongside the road. He was at a junction, with two road signs. One pointed to the left, and one to the right. The one pointing to the left said "Elves" and the one to the right said "Grinning Skulls."

Unfortunately, Nyomnyar can't read. He took the path to the right, anyway, and eventually found his way to the Grinning Skulls village. He was astounded to see many creatures such as himself. Still young, they took him in and taught him everything he would need to know to survive as an orc in the world of Thera.

Nyomnyar came across a house along the road during his walk to the orc clan's village. Outside of it was a skinny, nude woman with long brown hair pulling water from the well. He remembered thinking that she looked hideous. She wasn't fat enough, nor were her muscles big enough. She would just have to do for now, he thought.

To his surprise, she came on to him before he had the chance to rape her. She slowly licked and tickled his peeny, and, because she of how smart she was, she combined the words in her head, like an expression explorer of old.

Slickled, she thought. I'm slickling his peeny.

No matter how brilliant her wordplay, the result was the same. Nyomnyar's peeny was now erect. It felt like a quality bar of peeny-scented soap in her hands. Without warning she gave it a swift headbutt, because orcs likes that. All orcs liked that.

"Phwoa, Melinda. Dats gud stuff. Dats stuff make me forget problems."

Melissa derived satisfaction from this comment, despite the mangled pronunciation of her name. She could feel her horny levels rising to 30% and her hooha was getting right slimy with anticipation of participation.

"Orcy, me need sex inside please." Damn! thought Melissa. I wish there was a better way to say that!

Nyomnyar was only too eager to comply. He wrenched his peeny away from Melissa's grubby paws and thrust inside her hooha with a thunderous orgasm. She was pregnant, but that could be dealt with in the morning, provided she was still alive.

"Gud stuff, Melanie" Nyomnyar chortled. "Me knows could sleep now, but wants keep satisfy yuh, sans peeny." Nyomnyar nudged downward and his peeny was nowhere to be seen.

"What in have mind eeeeeee?"

"Sits back, relax, kitty cat."

Melissa did just that, falling back onto the bed and stretching her "perfect 7" body, eager for Nyomnyar's attention. He started working his magic immediately and she felt an all-too familiar heat rising from her breast. Nyomnyar was crouched over top and pooping all over her unbelievably average body.

"Orcy, so stinky."

"Dat just poop. Let work it magic."

"I... I can't see anything."

"Dat because yuh blind now, Mildred."

Melissa was blind for the rest of her life.

Please stop outing my plans for #1 poster. You should see the number of whine/cry PMs I've received in the last three days. It's as if they are brand new to Dios.

The slut thing really invoked Rayihn's anger, but I actually disliked him for a good number of reasons beyond that. You're probably right that they were a merger of IC and OOC reasons. If I ask you IC to stop spamming me over and over with having to drink thirteen times and you say #### off and keep doing it (in my shrine), the problem falls both in character and out. I've asked you not to do something IC, but you're also violating the no spam rule. For that matter, ditto the slut thing. Sexual harassment is against CF rules, period.

This character seemed pretty much out there to waste my time and or #### with me. He would spend a lot of time in Rayihn's shrine for no good reason - and then complain about how much he hated it. I honestly got to the point where I felt so harassed by him that I flat out begged him to just leave me alone as Rayihn. Stop talking to me, please stop coming to my shrine. I don't want to even vis when you're on line but I want to interact with my other followers.

Then I would log on Baer and have to deal with his complete and utter lack of desire to defend his cabal, raid for an item, or do anything in general. He wouldn't even bother to find out where the Orb was most of the time. And then he would truck right on into Baer shrine and ask me why he wasn't Maran.

I Maran'd him simply because I didn't want to have to read "Baer didn't Maran me cause she didn't like me". There was no other reason beyond the fact that Oshui said he'd gotten better, and I place a lot of stock in my leader's opinions.

At the end of the day, I felt his RP did not really match up with the Paladin's code, and title'd him appropriately.
7. Be fair of speech and actions.
10. Do not become like those you fight. Respect, Integrity, Valor.

Nothing bad beyond a title happened to this character.

for the response. Context, context, context.

I'm not Salmt by the way. I know I told you I'd roll up characters just to annoy you when you wouldn't spend six months coding halfling for me, or make Scarab do it, but I haven't the time for such tasks.

I don't agree that "slut" is rule breaking, but I don't make or enforce the rules!

Not a whole lot more I can say that won't end up with.. "Well, you can't keep all the people happy all the time."

The character claims he had no desire to go there, but that IC events kept taking him there. Is it against the rules to dislike a God IC? Because if it is, dear Lord would I be in trouble all the time

FWIW, I always appreciated that when I was Dronstyrr, you did a great job of roleplaying an Immortal who was like "Dude, you keep talking junk and I will just wave my hand and #### you in the ass". I never ONCE complained OOC about you titling me "Too Stupid to Live" and taking away my tell ability. All those things were IC, and I never once felt that YOU (the OOC player) disliked me. This situation feels/seems different.

This upsets me for several reasons. I will list them (and offer suggestions/commentary).

1) If he sucks at being a caballed character, UNINDUCT HIM.

2) If anyone is coming to Baer's shrine and asking why they aren't a MARAN, that's ####ing horrible roleplay (unless they took the macho, oblivious and myopic flaws). My suggestion if this ever happens again: Tell the character "Maran is not something you ask for. Maran is something that you are, or aren't. You aren't a Maran. Become one, and perhaps you will get what you want". BOOM.

3) I think it's great you put a lot of stock in your leader's opinions. That's great. However, if YOU (the Immortal overseer of a cabal) think that a character shouldn't be in a cabal, you need to make that clear to the leader. Did Oshui seek to work with Salmt to make him a better MARAN?

To a greater extent, Thror used to talk to me when I played Ghrimriddor about making sure BATTLE didn't get a bad reputation re: ganging/breaking the tablet. I always took that as a OOC "Hey, we've been getting complaints about your players. Watch them and make sure they step it up". I booted someone (one of the two people I booted) a week or so after that conversation. So that stuff does work. I have no idea if you've ever talked to Oshui about these things...so if you have, keep it up!

Also, I hate to say this (because I don't want to bring a tone of sour grapes) but when you MARAN a character like this, it makes me feel like ####. With Laesron I busted my ass to be the prototypical MARAN soldier (never complaining, never asking for MARAN, etc) and had to wait 200 hrs (and roughly 40 evil kills) to get MARAN. BUT! BUT, this made MARAN feel like an accomplishment, and made both the character and the player feel like it was worth it. But then I see a guy who you admit doesn't deserve MARAN get it with 10 kills or so....BLEH.

I've seen logs of the prostitute in hamsah. Sluts/whores/prostitutes are a common and accepted part of medieval/fantasy/cf. Sexual harassment can't be tolerated, but identifying it, knowing the difference between roleplay of a completely accepted and common presence, and harassment, seems important.

I wasn't there, I can never know how it went down, but I do think you need to modify your statement and behavior if you think that saying "slut" is always sexual harassment and always against the rules. It just can't be, and it must be a judgment call which times it is and which times it isn't, which is difficult, but better than lashing out to someone who is acting purely withing role.

My .02 as they say.

1) Kill gnomes unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY (lots of paladins have done this and gotten tattoed/titled/etc)

2) Get drunk without a good reason (plenty of paladins do this)

3) Act emo at the Inn

4) Talk junk to their enemies and disregard their allies lives (pretty much 50% of all paladins)

I could keep going on.

1) point me to a single gnome that has not killed a goodie

2) dwarf pally getting drunk is pretty much in-character, and I don't think there's an explicit injunction against it. Dwarf pally breaking profanity rules, both IC and OOC, to sexually harass an imm is completely different.

3) actually, there's no rule against that

4) while I kind of agree with you that paladins who do this are douchebags, they're still not as bad as idiots who break role to call omni-present Goddesses of Love sluts. I don't think even Rogue did that with his hyper bipolar pally.

You don't know if it was role breaking.

Slut is not profanity imo. Clearly some here think it is. In terms of punishing, that is up to the deciding immortal. In terms of us talking about the situation, you can't assume such a clear distinction.

Gods and Goddesses are not omni-present.

It's stupid as hell. It'd be stupidly OOC coming from an evil and it's twice as stupidly OOC coming from a goodie.

A paladin calling someone a slut is about as in-character as an elf who goes "sup, niggaz in the hood" to duergar. Black people exist in CF, and slums exist in CF, but anyone pulling that #### is completely breaking role and being both a racist and a douchebag on top of it.

According to the law neither are protected by the first amendment. Calling someone a slut has as harsh of a punishment as calling someone a n#####. Society does see generally that the latter as worse because woman are less important culturally than black people. I am not saying this because its my personal opinion but because it is something that shows up during study of law and sociology. Also it is something that appears in social media and within most books. I personally don't want to be posting this as I hate to come off as "Imm loving" but I'm just putting the facts down. I can bring specific examples of where I am getting this information from if need be. Both the law and sociological standpoints.

It is not profanity per se but it is definately sexual harrassment and even IF it is by role. It is still highly against the rules.

I've got a single #### to give...and it's just for you.

I was talking with another character privately with whom I had a relationship with (in which we talked like drunken fools - which we pretty much were).

If someone is snooping, there is no way there is any sexual harassment there. Don't listen if you don't want to hear things.

Why is this addressed to Rayihn? She already said in her above post that she titled him because he violated the paladin code. Again, nothing besides a title was changed about Salmt. I feel like a broken record here.

In regards to your thick skin comment, the players who are upset over some negative immortal comments should probably do the same, pot/kettle style.

Technically all neutrals have a balance of good and evil, so a paladin who sees them killing goodies mobs SHOULD kill them in my mind. That neutral is mass murdering goodies, hanging out with baddies, etc. In those circumstances their evil parts are showing and should be erradicated by a Maran for sure. IF they behave after and learn from their mistakes, then the paladin shouldn't attack them. In my mind I never understood this whole "Paladins shouldnt kill neutrals EVER" ####.

We watch this. If you see a paladin kill a neutral for what appears to be no reason, that's bad roleplay. It happens. Please be assured that we can stat mortals to see how many times a character kills mobs by race and ethos. If I am not mistaken, there are two characters who have been recently titled for killing their own race. The point is, we watch; we count. If it is a chronic situation, action is taken. If it's an isolated incident, we let it slide to avoid micromanaging. Trust me, you don't want that, and neither do we.

I really can't comment on the rest of your post other than to echo what I wrote above. Immortals by their RP and mechanics have access to far more information than mortals regarding what goes on. Oftentimes, players cry foul without seeing the whole story.

You don't see a difference between a prostitute, which can sometimes simply be a profession, and a slut, which is 99% of the time (*) used to demean and oppress someone with the English language?

((*)1% of the time it's used as a term of endearment/passion between people that care about each other)

Of course there may be a difference. But the key word is may. It's entirely context related, and as I said, only those there at the time can really know. But my point is it is important, imperative even, to admit the fact that the term can be ic appropriate and not 100% always ooc harassment.

If the staff wants to simply make a blanket rule that the word is going to be considered harassment, regardless of it's possible non-harassment potential, then that's fine, simply say so and players are forewarned.

If I call you a faggot in-game, it would be obviously OOC even if gay people existed in Thera (which they do). There's no excusing it. This game has rules against profanity and rules against breaking role and "slut" was both.

I don't care if the OP tries to spin it as part of his roleplay (LOL nice paladin, douchebag) but it was obviously OOC and deserved far worse than it got.

tl;dr I call you a faggot, I expect to get smacked down for it, possibly even denied. Slut should be treated no different.

This seems like an obvious bootable offense. Were you hesitant to boot because you assumed (correctly) that he'd perceive it to be retaliation for your interactions with him as Rayihn?

And they don't always like one another. Calling Rayihn a slut or using a more colorful string of words in the context of an IC conversation are very different things and should be handled differently.

That said, I also feel most of us can usually tell when someone is using language in an IC or OC way. One general way is it being done via tell or via say. I find people tend to not RP when using tells to the same degree they do in person, which is why I always did interviews and such in person. FOr some reason, people tend to actually have some manners when interacting face to face in the game, where as I hear such filth via tell. Maybe that's cause doing it face to face, they know you can PK them and strip them for being an ass.

As a char that played a lot of females, I would routinely have my chars called whore, bitch, slut and a whole bunch of other demeaning and insulting stuff, some of which was actually pretty clever and done IC. However, it is the context of those remarks that allows me as a player to know if it's a player talking or a character talking. I have no problem with characters saying anything to me, but players, I do get annoyed by and just ignore or will gun for even if it's bad enough.

Hell, my last character got called a rapist (almost, he trailed it off with elipses) by Whiysdan. But it was perfectly IC and pretty damn funny.

When you do it the right way, players can use swearing and insults and it can add to the depth of the game. (Real life is not all people being polite and courteous as we all know) Problem is that's not always easy to do, and more often than not you end up seeing it done in a juvenile manner, that is when it detracts from the game and can cross lines, which based on this limited context, I'd say Salmt did, though whether it was intentional or not I can't say. I just know if I had Imm powers I would have done far more to Salmt than Rayihn did, and that speaks to just how much patience she has for the bull**** she gets subjected to a lot of times.

Just some thoughts.

You snooped a chat I was having via PC chat with another character (one with whom we carried out very inappropriate conversations... drunken dwarf to drunken Herald).

If that's considered harassment, your bubble bath house is far more harassing.

Just saying.

Also. After you asked me to not drink thirteen times, I made an effort to emote things like "took thirteen deep gulps from his mug of ale".

Also... I never asked you why I wasn't Maran. I never really felt I deserved to be Maran. I *ASKED* what I needed to do to become Maran.

Finally, I never complained that anything bad happened to the character. I was just trying to point out to you after I deleted that I felt your OOC persona bleed into your IC persona. That's it. My OOC persona wasn't bleeding into my IC persona.

Oh... and I'm not one who's big on the boards. I'm not a whiner or complainer or an anti Rayihn (or anti Baer) for that matter. In the years I've been here I've had very good interactions with the IMMs and had always felt I was treated fairly and with respect, until this one bad character interaction.

Keep up the great game!

I certainly agree that we could be more mature about it. However, again it's a video game where most of us come to shed the day's stress. It's a majority male community. Males tend to shed stress by teasing/badgering each other.

There is certainly nothing wrong with anyone getting offended at something people say out of game. I don't think they should, but human is human.

Should that bleed over to the game though? I mean, from what I can tell, the Rayihn in character persona certainly seems like something one might consider a "slut." I could be completely off on that, but if I'm reading it that way, others might too. Maybe we shouldn't roleplay a slut (in game) if we don't want to be called a slut (in game). It's a goddess of love and vanity that lives in a bathhouse... I suppose it isn't sphere lust at least.

Now, if someone calls you slut OOC. That's a different matter. That person should probably be banned for personal insults or what have you. That is, if we are going to punish for such. Of course, that would require much stricter enforcement of forums rules across the board. Something I'd not be opposed to but is hard to expect.

Finally, your comment about mysoginist... Well, we've been down that path, but keep in mind we have more than 1 female admin. To say the complaints against her (also keep in mind I'm still not complaining about her, just discussing this case) is based in mysogyny seems a bit...lacking.
