Do these skills do anything beyond increasing your chance of beating armor deflection and being required for some edges?

No extra damage? No extra chance of turning a miss into a proper hit, i.e. extra hitroll? No extra chance of getting past defenses?

Overall, I believe aim and such do exactly as you describe, but since shield block takes into account your armor use, I believe the aim subset can help get around shield block, but that's it. Of course, I could be wrong, but that's my best knowledge.
