Seeing as how both treants and staves made into snakes are made out of wood, would it be possible to make them slmply float, rather than having to cast fly on them to get them across water?

If they simply floated they wouldn't follow you, they'd be completely guided by currents, and eventually would get waterlogged and sink. I think I'm fine how it is today. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

The fact is, if we were going to be realistic, anybody with less than say 10% encumberance and no hydrophobia should probably be able to swim around, but that's just not how water works in CF for gameplay reasons.
But for the sake of argument.... Snakes generally can swim, and I'd think a wooden snake would be pretty capable. A treant could arguable just not have any idea how to propel itself in water despite floating easily and having the coordination to fight in combat against people.
What you might consider is an edge that basically folds the casting of fly into the casting of the other sups. So the mana cost goes up, it's still limited in time, but you just are saved the trouble of casting the fly.
