#44808, "Religion Change"

At this time & age, we can change our religion to whatever keeps our fancy. Or go Atheist if none attracts.

I saw the religion/sphere limits on FB posts. It got me thinking that I had made characters following an IMM, then the IMM goes inactive and then I am stuck with that forever. Would it be possible to change religion/sphere so I can feel more connected than have an inactive IMM.

Secondly, why can't I be a atheist who doesn't believe in any god. If I RP that, then I am not going to take any sphere. And I have to break RP to ask an IMM to set my sphere to "none" and then answer multitudes of questions.

So, how do I now play an atheist without breaking RP?

Try to pick one that suits your character's personality well. You don't have to be religious and follow any of the Immortals. CF world is, however, such that Immortals exist there and are vastly more powerful than you are. Also, why insist being atheist? You could be a theist that does not follow any of the Immortals religiously and considers their religions philosophies where he may choose to amend from if he so wishes. Or you could simply be apathetic to the Immortals as whole and don't care much about them unless you happen to face one.

Priests have the upper hand when having does their god exist-kind of conversation with you in Thera. Ultimately, they could always bring you to meet their god. Thus, atheist that doesn't believe that Immortals exist would simply be wrong in Thera. Therefore I think that apathetic towards religions is a more viable route to take. Most of my characters, for example, haven't followed any particular god. Religion just wasn't a factor in their lives.

Sphere does not denote worship, nor does worship determine sphere.

Your sphere is effectively a birthsign, or essential force that holds sway over your spirit.

How the Gods of Thera interact with Spheres is kind of odd... They're sort of like Domains in DnD.

As with some of the other replies you have gotten, you certainly can be an atheist if you so choose. Since atheism IRL is about the denial of the existence of any deities, it would have to be modified in a world where the Immortals are plainly visible and interacting with mortals. The two meaningful options I see are: (1) denial that the Immortals are truly gods, or that the definition of "god" may have variegated meaning (perhaps there is a true god who created the Immortals); or (2) rejection of putting trust in or worshiping the Theran Immortals.

You can.

>If I RP that, then I am not going to take any sphere.

Except spheres are more like astrological signs (Pisces, Libra, etc.) and you get one whether you want one or not.

>So, how do I now play an atheist without breaking RP?

You play an atheist. Having a sphere doesn't mean you believe in the Immortal Pantheon.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Spheres are kind of like your birth sign. They are forces that comprise the universe Thera is in. There are neat graphs and such that show you how different spheres interact and where they lye physically.

Gods typically hold sway over certain forces, but just because that force holds sway over you doesn't mean you have any connection to that god.

A sphere isn't your belief, it is literaly a part of who you are in Thera.

Many gods can cover one sphere, its more a focus of your character, what emobdies them most, sometimes that will mean you are the same sphere as a god, but the religion will only be partly based on the sphere and likely include others. If your god goes inactive, how traumatised are his priests going to be?is seeking out another god wise?
