#41837, "People are having problem getting on to these forums."

It took me a lot of time and hassle to get back to these forums. For some reason I just couldn't connect to them. And I couldn't find the reason, all of the sudden it just worked. Some RL buddies of mine can't still, whatever they try.

Anything known?

Always shoot first and then call whatever you hit the target.

Maybe 10% of the times I check the forums, I am unable to connect. In fact, this just happened 5 minutes ago for a spell of about 5 minutes and now I'm able to connect again.

Once it works, it works. And when it doesn't work, it doesn't work, so it's consistent in that aspect.

I'll try pinging/traceroute forums.carrionfields.com to see what happens next time this occurs.

There's an area under options for "Predict network actions to improve page load performance". Since the website changed, it can go guess wrong and not show up. If ya uncheck that, then go to the website now, the problem goes away.

Oddly enough I haven't had any problems with chrome on my work computer but I don't visit this site much from there.

Thanks though, good thought.

I've been having intermittent trouble with carrionfields.com, but I can live with that. What has really been affecting me lately is command denial during the game. There seem to be times during the day, quite frequently in the past two weeks, where I am lagged out of the game for a considerable amount of time, anywhere between 10 seconds all the way up to the worst spike which was about 4 minutes.

I have seen others mentioning this lag on newbie channel, but it doesn't appear that everyone is getting it in game. Generally I am still getting information from the game, but my commands will hang for awhile before eventually going through all at once.

I am pretty sure my internet connection is stable, it isn't having troubles in any other games. Anyone have more insight into this, or has been experiencing these spikes?

Because if there's a DNS issue, connecting via IP is unaffected by it.

But I don't believe once you are connected that any DNS issue would continue to cause issues. Mostly because once the connection is made, nothing should still be doing DNS lookups, but I'll test that tonight.

What I am seeing indicates to me there is a network bandwidth or latency issues between me and the server. Just last night I saw 3 ticks go by while I was trying to walk 1 room, and often I'll get something like 10 rooms come back in a single "chunk" instead of the normal rate. This indicates to me that for the most part, my commands are getting through, and the game's server isn't experience any lag in generating the data, but that it simply isn't getting to me (and me to it) in the normal latency.

I think this should show up via ping, but haven't tested that yet. It may not if it is something else on the same server that is hogging network traffic, or is prioritized over CF's network traffic.

carrionfields.org doesn't respond to ping, and isn't registered to any IP carrionfields actually uses. This should probably be fixed.

carrionfields.com doesn't respond to ping, but that isn't unusual for a webserver.

So roughly 25% packet loss for carrionfields.net (where the mud actually lives) with asynchronous ping and interval based ping. The nice thing about asynchronous is that you can actually watch it and see it stutter, which is essentially the same feeling I have when playing.

This would account for the "lag" I am seeing. I'll try to run some traces and figure out if I can determine where the packets are being dropped if they aren't from the hosting server.

It looks like my path switches a bit where it comes out in elmhurst, but I don't think that is what is causing the issue. It appears to me (without being able to do any better tests) that the server or something at/near the server is dropping 25% of traffic.

I haven't done the PING but I send info and see it all come out as if I executed it in bursts.

Or I might see things happening but My commands aren't going through.

Or I may simply lag out.

Here's the result. First chapter is packets and second is minimum, maximum and average pings in milliseconds. I did not find any problems. Pinging carrionfields.net gave the same result, so maybe the problem isn't happening right now? Pinging carrionfield.com was not possible for me.

Ping-tilastot 66.85.154.235:
Paketit: Lähetetty = 61, Vastaanotettu = 61, Kadonnut = 0 (0% hävikki),

Arvioitu kiertoaika millisekunteina:
Pienin = 216 ms, Suurin = 218 ms, Keskiarvo = 217 ms

I play from Kuwait but I see things happening and then suddenly all my commands go through.

I experience this the most when I am in PK.

I am wondering if there could be some connection to this phenom and how the Main page records data for fights? That is, if it records data?

Hypothetically, could I have any sort of lag effect on a character of I ran a search on his name on this sight? Would the sight send a query to the game to check thus causing some interferance?

Edt I just tried this with a characater and didn't notice anything different. Or so it seemed.

Weirdly, it happened around the time of the IP change? I honestly can't recall it happening before that.

So, lots of times I can't connect to www.carrionfields.com, so I'll try just forums.carrionfields.com and that will come up, but usually it's the other way around. Quite often I won't be able to get on to either one.

I thought everyone was experiencing this, but then I'd see people post on Dio's about "putting up their battlefield post" and then I'd go there after being blocked for a couple days and whallah - huge thread with tons of responses. So, it was just me?

From both work and home, same problem. First 4-6 attempts to open carrionfields.com site are failing (404 I think, but I'll make sure later).

It looks like some dns problem, but here I'm not sure if it's correct. Once site opens, it keep working well.

I thought it's my local trouble, but probably not. This problem appears only during last 2 days.

If you can't get in, just press F5 and keep it pressed for 3-4 seconds. One of those reuqests will get to the site and you will get in.

Work for me 100% (chrome), not sure about explorer.

PS: and yeah, explorer sucks

The official forums, occasionally too, but it's been quite frequent with www.carrionfields.com (you do know that the forums are a separate site that are not down together with www.carrionfields.com?). The site is not always down, but has downtime with 404 not found error.

To get to the forums I always just go to this link:
http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=read_new

I haven't seen any problems in IE, Firefox or Chrome to get to the forums or the main site, but it does look suspiciously like DNS problems.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Sometimes I have to try to connect to www.carrionfields.com ten times or so via refresh button in order to get the site to connect and not getting site not found. The last time this downtime happened (right before I wrote these words), I managed to connect after 15-20 refreshes, taking about half a minute or so. It's really annoying and started after the migration to the new server. I have encountered at least three of these mini-crashes within last fifteen minutes.

Basically it's as if the page isn't there. But if I keep trying, it eventually is.

Once on the forum, it's then fine.

That's because the forum is a completely different box, and different IP/DNS. If you just bookmark the forums and go there you won't have any problems.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

forums.carrionfields.com resolves to 216.120.231.112
www.carrionfields.com resolves to 205.232.99.66 for me, and both of these work flawlessly from both of my ISP's.

If you are having trouble I suggest running nslookup www.carrionfields.com (from a DOS command prompt) and see if the IP matches. I'm betting not (or at least not every time) so you are seeing stale DNS info some of the time and correct info some of the time, which is why sometimes you get no page and sometimes it works.

Bookmarking may or may not fix that as I'm not sure that a bookmark doesn't still rely on DNS (I'm fairly certain it will still look up the address). Using the link from the forums doesn't guarantee it will work either, since that isn't an IP address reference either. I'm not sure if there is anything Zulg or his hosting folks can do either though.
