#41088, "Request for general PK tips"
Edited on Wed 02-Nov-11 07:59 PM

With my recent Assassin attempt, I had high dex, very low weight, and all essential skills at 100% yet still I tanked like a giant concrete block.
While, when I played a Storm Giant and attacked an Assassin using axes, I didn't hit anything, while the Assassin never missed. And I thought using a weapon the other doesn't know should be an advantage.
Sometimes I think I don't have a #@!&^ clue about this PK thing (and I likely don't).
Also, when attacking mobs, it's often like:
You dodge a mob's beating. You dodge a mob's beating. Your slash MASSACRES mob. Your slash MANGLES mob. You dodge a mob's beating. Your slash DISMEMBERS mob. You dodge a mob's beating.
Yet, on a PC:
Your slash misses PC. Your slash misses PC. PC's beating MANGLES you. PC's beating DISMEMBERS you. PC's beating DISMEMBERS you. Your slash MUTILATES PC. Your slash misses PC.
(just a random example)
Uh, could you give me a clue ?
PS: Was originally going to be a reply to Valkenar's Grethmorduk thread, but I think it's better off on it's own. (might reach more people)

So before going into a battle you generally want to know a couple things.
1.) What will the most likely strategy of your oppoent be
Class/cabal is all you need to know for the most part to get a good guess. Giant sword specs are going to bash and flurry, necros are going to flee sleep, invokers are going to use elemental damage, thieves want to knock you out or trip.
At least in general you want to guess if they are going to try to use a lagging strat, a direct damage strat, a maledict strat, or a knock out strat. Make sure you are ready to deal with whichever seems most likely.
2.) In combat you want to keep mental track of how many rounds you have until you die and until they die.
This takes some time to get a feel for and one of the biggest differences between a noob and a vet is that they can accuratly gauge this while taking into account both melee and the skills likely to be thrown at them. But the end of the day making sure the number of rounds to death is lower for the other guy then you is how you get a lot of kills.
3.) Have a plan going into a fight.
Decide what your strat will be before going into the fight and stick to it. If its not working don't just try and change strats mid fight. Retreat, regroup, attack again with a new strat.
4.) Hunter vs trapper.
To excel in PK you have 2 basic options. Either you hunt after prey which is a lot like search and destroy or you lay in wait to spring a trap. In both of these cases you are the agressor and not the victim (even if in trap mode you pretend to look like the victim). In most circumstances the person who controls the point of engagement wins the fight or has a strong advantage over the prey.

Is it legal to do so with current characters?

There are log formatting instructions on the log board here - can post it here or on www.QHCF.net. And yeah its legal as long as you aren't posting the log with the intent of making someone look bad.

Never rely on your own ability to tank.
Whether that means disarm, maledict, or increased damage reduction, the way to win the game is to affirmatively neutralize him.
That's the reason why I never spam practice defenses to 100%
