I cannot get on CF because of the network firewall and the game wont allow me to use proxy servers. Any ideas how i might be able to continue to play?

I've got a single #### to give...and it's just for you.

Basically, it took like an hour and a half to get everyone inside using the methood I knew, and a couple hours in, an imm controlled mob came through and wiped out half the group. Was like a 15 or 16 man hell trip, the biggest I ever got going.

Was that my muter build required very specific things, which meant I didn't actually use any hell gear when I got it. Even +75 hp wasn't worth more to me than +2 str, because muters tanked so well and had dam redux.

A VPN provider costs about $5/month.

Or you could nicely ask the imms if they wouldn't mind having carrionfields listen to a lower port as well (443 for example is normally used for SSL connections, and is probably not blocked). But there are probably some good reason why they haven't done this already..

Zulg might tell you all that I don't know what the hell I'm talking about (a common trait for me), but I'm pretty sure that the way CF is set up, it can only listen on one port per game instance.

I'm not a networking guru either, but as far as I know it would be fairly simple to set things up such that TCP:443 gets redirected to TCP:4449. To the CF process it would appear as if all connections were coming in to port 4449.

nc -l 443 -c 'nc carrionfields.net 4449' should do the trick

I'd be able to play some during lunch/work if you set a port redirect. 443 would be great. If it really is easy, maybe try it out for us?

Aside from being a reserved port, 443 happens to be used already by the hosting company (e.g., https://208.43.220.232/).

I'm guessing none of the coders really feel like mucking around with the sockets code so that CF could bind to a second port and handle the I/O headache that likely comes with it.

Another very likely caveat: Without root (or other tricks that won't fly on shared hosting), processes are limited to ports over 1024. Many schools, workplaces, etc., that would bother to block 9994 (a very benign port) are probably going to also be blocking whatever alternate port CF might choose within the range it's allowed to pick from.

To avoid unnecessary technical headaches as well as avoid having to please everyone in terms of alternate ports and whatnot, it's probably best if the (very) few people who would ever NEED something like that just go about solving the problem on their own in a way that works for their unique circumstances. Obviously, there are plenty of technically inclined folks around the forums willing to offer advice.

We get a small range, and none of them will solve this problem. As for the other post mentioning the nc command, that's not even something that is on the box that I can find, and if it is, more than likely not something I have permissions to run.

Again, CF is run on a shared resource that I don't have root access to.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Isildur is helping me with port forwarding from a router anyway. I just thought if this was an easy fix it might be worthwhile for a small but worthwhile minority.

When you say shared resources, I always assumed a VM farm or something, not an actual shared box/OS. Makes some of the lag stuff more understandable.

Very handy tool.. But you need root access in linux to listen on ports below 1024, so even if you could install netcat, it wouldn't be any good

Out of curiosity, how much more per month is it to get dedicated hardware?

Shared server for what I think CF needs = $25/mo.
Dedicated server = $150-$200/mo.

The first easily fits into my budget (yes, I pay for the mud hosting, not the LLC), the second...not so much.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Looks like there are budget options, but the specs might not be up to snuff.

$79/mo:
http://www.hostingsource.com/advanced_server_plans.php

$69/mo:
http://www.razorservers.com/solutions/dedicated-servers/pricing/

I guess there's co-location, but probably more trouble than its worth.

Your college dorm's network has ports blocked? That's terrible.
