#35118, "Couple Ranger questions, maybe a few."
|
When Cavern Dwellers first came about, there was something in the help file about obsidian shards added to their staffs. I don't see that now, but do they make more damaging staffs?
What is the difference between a Welf staff and anyone elses?
Is Caverndweller Bearcharge less effective than survivalist as has been suggested in the past. I don't want to start an Imm says one thing player says another war but going through the search engine I found that one player in particular seemed pretty certain it was. Related to that, could it be that bearcharge works most effectivly in home terrain and so that was their experience?
Same thing for Mariner Bearcharge, is it less effective than stock survivalist?
TIA

Unless they were upgraded after their inception, caverndwellers never got any special cool thing to their staffs/spears like the helpfile once said.
I specifically remember what you are referring to in the helpfile though-- because I rolled a dark elf caverndweller right when the ranger changes went in, hoping that they got some cool extra-hurty staffs like the helpfile said. But it wasn't to be.
And then if I remember correctly someone on the immstaff clarified this for us that the helpfile was incorrect and that staff thing was removed from the helpfile shortly after.

This weapon, a ranger's staff, can be referred to as 'rangers staff'. It radiates light. A magical aura surrounds it. It is unusable for those of a pure soul. People of a dark heart cannot use it. Only an elf could put it to use. Only a ranger could utilize it. It is worth 0 copper, and is of the 15th level of power. It can cause 11d5 points of damage, at average 33. When worn, it affects your ability to do damage by 17 points and your ability to land accurate blows by 17 points.

I think all ranger spears have obsidian tips but it's been a while since I've had a ranger. I don't think it alters the damage type or output at all.
The wood-elf staff is about 2 average dam better at each level and about +2 to +4 hit/damroll (as you get higher level) IIRC.
Bearcharge effectiveness as a lagging tool is predicated on class and size, I don't think terrain comes into it at all (aside from mountaineer's auto-bearcharge). Hunters have the least effective bearcharge from a lagging perspective(they don't lag AT ALL) and either beastmasters or savages seem to have the best. Size is the key determining factor (bigger is better). It does seem to work best (like most things) in home terrain but works about as well elsewhere.
I had a storm savage a while back (hence mariner) and it had a fairly effective bearcharge on all wilderness terrains.
Caveat: These are just my impressions from a few rangers over the years and they could be wrong.

Bearcharge is almost useless for caverndwellers (unless it is beastmasters, but I think it was the caverndwelling aspect that did it).
Wood-elf staff is higher av dam, and wood-elves imbue better too if I recall.
Can't comment on mariner bearcharge. I was an animist mariner and one of those two aspects meant no bearcharge.
