#29740, "What does one have to do to actually become a Maran?"

I am curious as to the requirements to become one. I've only seen two marans in Fortress, Ardyll and Ilrek which I've seen once for a few minutes, and that one is the leader of the cabal. They're the only two I've met. I played with Niheriva, that last storm giant warrior in the fortress. For the life of me i cannot remember his name. Sword spec/bash spec and used maces too, and played a couple of months ago. Anyways, he's the only one I've seen as a maran very early in life, and not a leader either. He ended up being an Elder, and Arrna, the hypocrit was made leader. Anways, what must one do? Is it based on hours as a squire? PKs? Role Playing? I haven't met the gods within the fortress since I've played, and I'm on all the time. Do I just keep doing what I'm doing, and hope one day I become one? The maran skills/spells look very nice.

Any imms want to answer this?

Any former marans want to answer this?

I retrieve, I raid, and I kill many of the 'wicked' What else should I be doing? Is it based on level of your character?

It's weird because players in the past have become a maran quickly, but I dont understand why that is.

Anyone?

That the Fort Imms have been out from the holidays, The only Acolyte I've seen is the leader, and the only Marans were the Leaders as well.

I figured they made sure there were leaders to induct, and then were going to address anyone that needs promoted when they are back, but now I'm not so sure.

Sounds like you have had more marans than me, as I've only had one, and that one was by no means quick.

Generally it helps to be successful in fighting evil, to have decent RP, and to not be a douchebag.

(I have no idea who you are so none of that is a referendum on you personally.)

That's ok. I didn't think you meant me. But, I have done all those so far, but I am still young. I probably have around 20 pks, maybe. I dont keep track, so dont really know. I haven't died yet, either. Just waiting for that day

I haven't had a maran before, only squires, but I gave up on some of them in the past. Just got bored with the character.

I'm going to stick this one out, but was just curious because lightforge and zeal might make me rethink my 2nd spec choice.

I heard on other page that you have to be a squire for a certain amount of hours? THis true? SOmeone mentioned 200 hours, but that's alot.

Baerinika posted sometime (IIRC) that typically decent squires get it around 100 hours. Sometimes she goes earlier on someone going particularly well if she has an eye on them for leadership, and some people take much long, if ever.

Don't remember reading it, but it seems on par with a lor of the PBFs I've went over for fortressites.

That you are viewed as being too conservative. If you have no deaths, you have probably passed up some good chances for kills. It's not that dissimilar from my style (which includes a lot of close calls), and I've never made maran. Admittedly my only fortress powerhouse was a scribe, who didn't make acolyte because he was too bloodthirsty. heh. I was trying to stop scribes and acolytes as being seen as weak.

But also, there are a lot of fortress apps, and if a lot are accepted, then to balance things you probably need to maranate fewer people (even though you might normally expect more).

When it comes to my character, I fight them anywhere. Oddly, I've played all evil characters so this first goodie one in a while i just like to kill the evil. I haven't thought about staying away from anyone yet, to be honest. I'm kind of wreckless that way, but in a good way

Just seems to me that marans are kind of a limited class you can be within the fortress. I mean, I'm not complaining, but squires get mantle, whereas all my other characters were mainly empire, and you get rank, prestige, and cabal powers very early. Zeal seems like call 'blade of the codex' strength, but it just seems that it's going to take much longer to become a maran, and alot more work than donating to the Empire.

Anyways, I'll keep doing what I do, and see what happens.

Arcane in the current Empire, it seems to take a lot of donations, and time, to get Imperial Citizen...I still don't have it. I'm constanstly broke from donating all my money to the empire. I almost died because I didn't even have enough to get rid of a plague. I've died defending, when I knew I was going to, but I had to impress glurgick. I've done all I can, everything I can, including (what I think is) good RP. It's almost like playing my scribe all over again...except with less money.

I think the level of effort and devotion required to make an Imperial "Arcane" work is really going to fluctuate with each Emperor.

Some are going to treat you well, especially as muters and invokers, because you're so useful. Some might stick to the purist Imperial RP that you're bad for the Empire and can't be trusted, etc. It just depends on their take as a player and character.
