Getting mana back fast is supposed to be hard unless your class is built to do it. I'm really reluctant to make gold even better at surmounting every problem.

It's already a huge drawback for ragers and outlanders that they can't gold their problems away - and remember, I play mages and forties plenty, so I'm talking about my own characters, too - and making it even easier for the rest to heal up, both hp and mana, and return to the fight isn't a good idea.

You can do much more with mana than hp, healing wise.
Also, an abs'd mage (or prep-protected priest) can not heal hp that cheaply at a healer. So the mana conversion rate is actually pretty favourable.
