When I can choose to bust out a dozen bugs on the board that I understand or spend another day looking at entwine to probably not solve anything, I typically pick the former.

One of these days someone will just break down and rewrite the skill completely from scratch probably.

you just got rid of the code that makes the flail unwieldable? It still drops into your inventory, but you could just put it back into your hand. I realize this is a little more powerful than the way it works right now, but really how bad would it be? Who doesn't have another flail or whip in their inventory to use anyway?

of course, I have no idea if this is an easier fix than rewriting the skill... but, I thought it might be worth throwing out there.
