I've never seen those numbers without a Rites being held in my life.
And then, sometimes there is no villagers, all the mages log on.
It just doesn't make sense to kick the underdog in the ass when he's down and spit in his face.

Most of the stuff people seem to think it does, it doesn't, and there are some counter-advantages/rewards for being the underdog side.
It means something -- if it didn't, what would be the point to this or any other mechanic that allows a cabal to try to expand or profit from their dominance -- but it's not all that.

I never really bothered to think of it as enough of an issue to cause people to jump on the magic/no magic bandwagon, but that part never did make sense to me as far as the when you DO get eight battleragers hunting you, that fact alone automatically makes magic go in the crapper?
Themically as well, the Veil is controlling the flow of Magic into Thera, wouldn't that make it seem as though there's a somewhat fixed-ish amount incoming at any X time, which would have to be spread throughout all mortals using it? Hence, even if the Veil's almost non-existant, if you have 300 mages all drawing magic at once, wouldn't that weaken the overall magical ability of all mages?
Though in reverse, I can't really see why having more or less people who hate magic would have any sort of direct impact on a mage's abilities, unless you look at it in a somewhat teeter-totter perspective, that if there's a lot more hating it, there must be less using it.
The part I always wondered though...is that it seems like the presence or lack of battleragers/powerful mages always seemed to have a much stronger impact on the Veil than actually giving items to Tahren/couriers did. Always felt like giving items had to be a constant thing to keep magic at all better or worse, while just showing up would totally super-power or fuxxor magic, respectively.
