...Does anyone else think this shouldn't be allowed, and can be a real problem for thieves?

Uh... how?
Thief blackjacks/etc. you... and starts stealing your stuff... and if you're bored you can check and pay attention to what you're losing. What's the problem there?

Let's say you are sleeping after a ranking spree, recooping for the next round.
The thief could be swiping something for a reason, or maybe planting something for using when you wake up.
Basically, being able to check it while asleep is like looking in the mirror with your eyes closed. Sure, the chance of it being exploited is small, but its a chance that certain builds could definitely exploit.

They could be... but if you're spamming inventory and paying attention to what changes they probably didn't surprise you too much, did they?

I know man!
But that should be a viable tactic for them to use. Basically I'm getting at this: being able to check your inventory while sleeping is unfairly (that's the question here) nuking a tactic that some people might use. Hell, what if I want to plant a 200lb sack of coal on my groupmate so that he dodges like a brick, and then betray him? If he's on the spot with inventory spamming then I'm screwed. He shouldn't be able to is all I'm saying.

if you don't want them seeing their inventory then make them blind in one of the several ways available.

I can't see people around corners and in buildings (WHERE) I can't communicate in my sleep (GT) I can't shoot bolts of lightning from my arse (MAGIC)
seriously dude willing suspension of disbelief and all that jazz.
From a utilitarian viewpoint the utility gained by the few people who could use this as a niche tactic is far outweighed by the loss that the whole playerbase would experience by this change.
I mean what next, a penalty to fighting when your convulsing on the ground?

I don't agree.
Even if I were to 100% agree with everything you're saying (which, to be clear, I don't), my feeling is that knockout abilities are already strong/difficult enough (that is, is it fun to wait around doing nothing while you're spelled up or your inventory is cleaned out? not really, no) without a change like this making it even stronger and more boring to wait through, and that outweighs your rare and niche situation in which you're trying to put one over on someone who's naturally sleeping and they happen to be spamming inventory for some reason.
