Imho - overpowered.

The dex stat has seen a lot of pumping in recent times, to the point it now matters. In the case of dodge-defense focused combos, it is an important matter. Dex maledicts are still a little on the low side post-change - and so the BIG maledicts that exist are very important for taking down dexy combos. One of which is - the uber geared bard. Being able to combine massive damage reduction with Dodge/Parry AND distortion makes them a strong group pk and solo pk choice. And being at some mid-point between an ABSed invoker and an arial spear-spec - I would even say THE most all-around defensive character in the game.

So why are we giving bards the option of ignoring dex maledicts completely?

This edge looks out of place amongst a ton of edges that already have questionable purposes (see - the +fiend edge. A completely unecessary addition). And so I propose a liberal beating with the nerf stick, or at bare minimum a serious code review. Were there more -chr maledicts out there, I might simply ask for the cost to be jacked up. But unless you're playing an overpowered tactical AP or muter - there isn't a class that can combine enough -chr and -dex to bring down a bard's defenses solo. Let alone do any kind of significant -chr when the average songsmith is recieving +6 in chr bonuses.

If charisma was only half as effective as Dex when used to consider dodge/evade, that'd be totally cool. The log that prompted my review was looking back at Jichii versus a mace/spear spec. In that solo fight the edge shined so bright I had to wip out my sunglasses to review it. He weathered -16/-16 on str/dex, continued to fight like an arial on red bull (how cool would 4 wings be?) and might even have out-meleed the warrior if he'd kept on round-housing and had held his shield earlier. If that ain't broke, I don't know what is.

I took a look at the code, and it does not make you ignore dex maledicts completely. I'd say the closest thing is that it provides you a sort of riddle of resilience against dex affects in the code (not in the actual affect itself, you'll still have -10 dex, but it'd be more likely affecting you as -6 with regards to dodge).

Maybe you right, but it doesn't change the fact that with Kornuel and Liriana I NEVER felt difference in dodge no matter how hard foes maledicted my dexterity. Hehe, maybe my senses were blured

Note at the end I had both Impale and Boneshatter stacked. And still dodged most of what he threw. These weren't dagger vs mace parries in effect - it was dodge while I must have had about 8 dex down from my normal 21. I know for a FACT that after taking the swashbuckler edge, I evaded far more skills than I did before (I had natural 24 charisma, 21 dex). That much I noticed as I'd almost never evade pre-edge and I evaded quite a few times afterwards.

I just can't explain why a bard that's boneshattered, impaled and wielding a dagger is able to defend so perfectly against a dual wielding warrior. If that had been something similar like a thief - they'd be dead five minutes ago. The only explanation I can come up with is the edge. Unless there's something you see that might have such a significant impact?

There's more to this log, where I take it to the inners and end up killing the warrior later. Stuff wears off, but I get disrupted and maledicted again - but still defend against 2 hasted inners and the warrior well enough to beat arse.

And the log might be useful. Show me what his dex & chr are, and it's a lot easier to explain.

The code is literally 2 lines long, and as I described above.

Charisma- Definetly 24. Nothing taking it down, plenty pumping it up, and I had my natural boosted above 23.

Dex - Only +4 from gear, and at least -9/-9 from boneshatter and -6/-6 from impale. With a natural of 21 that means I had about 10 dex. If my quickness prog went off, then that's another +3 and would put me at 13 dex max.

Strength will have been about 9-10 in this log. My carry weight from a fight an hour or two before this was 173lbs. Won't have varied much at all for this fight - since I was pretty much running hot the entire time.

As always, nothing is totally certain in a game with this much randomness, but this would very very likely look a lot different today.

I'll try to rewrite the Swashbuckler helpfile soon to be more clear.

Being that you have the code and all? I don't mean to be 'that' guy, but I don't think I've ever heard a programmer for a software company tell me "I am 90% sure thats what this does".

Is testing and/or checking this code that obscene of a time-sink?

That's because there isn't a random number generator involved in most projects that come out of software companies.

If the fight happened today the bard would most likely dodge less of the warrior's attacks, but as to what actually happens is still somewhat random. I've had PKs with an invoker where I dodged every physical attack, unlikely though it is.

Where the punchline is 'Open your drawer and slam your hand in it"?

You seem to have had a chip on your shoulder against the staff for...oh...as long as I can remember. It might be worth contemplating that most people thought Nepenthe's response was reasonable and relatively friendly.

There is no way to be "100% sure" that a combat engagement that happened in the past would have gone differently with his changes in place. In fact, in order to make any statement that wasn't guesswork he would have to:

1. Speculate about the skills, gear, edges, and other ephemeral effects these characters had on them at the time, none of which are evident in the log,

2. Simulate many rounds of combat without the fix in place to see whether the melee rounds contained in the log fall within normal ranges (i.e. neither party was extremely lucky),

3. Simulate many rounds of combat with the fix in place to see how the changes modified the melee results.

All this to satisfy someone on the forum who insists he be "100% sure" as opposed to just "90%". If you ask me, I'd rather him spend his time on something else. Like...oh...maybe playing a mortal.
