I see recently lots of gem-based items were added to the strengthenable list, yet emerald/crystal are unstrengthenable. Is this for a reason or was it simply overlooked? Thanks in advance for any kind of response.

On one hand, gemstones are natural materials. On the other, many of the items made from them were mined, then cut and polished before being set into metal.

Probably what will happen at some point is we'll retouch the logic for Strengthen, lower the number of materials it uses, and allow area authors to designate items of other materials as "natural" as they wish.
