What's their position on these skills? Weren't old school rangers kept from calling bears at one point due to the "courage" factor or am I misremembering?

Misremembering. I got my ass beat by Battle bears and their cloud ranger sidekicks from dawn until dusk. At dusk, they would make a campfire, serve up s'mores, and then kick my ass some more.
Good times.

This doesn't directly answer your question at all, but here I go anyway...
I remember having a talks with Thror about my future idea to roll a Battle Druid Defender. Call of the Wild is a skill, and we figured it was within the bounds of Scout/Defender roleplay to use it. Only problem with Battle Druids is the lack of Blessed Weapons readily available. So I never really got one off the ground. But anyway, I could see a Battle Ranger able to call critters as a Scout or as a Defender, but likely not as a Berserker.
Of course, I'm not an authority on Battle at all, just throwing out some opinions.
