#13009, "Role playing suggestions"

I play another mud and I have recently been playing on this one. I generally like what I see but there are a few things that the other mud offers that I think would make a great addition here. I'll just attach the help files from my other mud, which will make it much easier.

Thanks!

Pmote

Syntax: Pmote <Message>

The pmote command is similar to the EMOTE command, with the following
exception: every occurence of a person's name in a pmote string is
replaced by the appropriate pronoun.

Ex:
Three players, Iandir, Jolinn, and Aeolis are standing in a room.

Man1 types:
pmote looks at Man2.

--

Man2 sees:
Man1 looks at you.

Man1 sees:
Man1 looks at Man2.

Man3 sees:
Man1 looks at Man2.

Ex:
Same people as before.

Man1 types:
pmote looks at Man2's boots.

--

Man2 sees:
Man1 looks at your boots.

Man1 sees:
Man1 looks at Man2's boots.

Man3 sees:
Man1 looks at Man2's boots.

==
Smote

Syntax: smote <action>

Smote works exactly like emote, except you must place your name somewhere in the string, and it will show that string to everyone in the room.

ex:

smote With a flick of his tail, Aunes slaps away a nearby rock.

everyone sees:

With a flick of his tail, Aunes slaps away a nearby rock.

==
Format

Syntax: <desc/bg> format

This command will format either your description or background, such
that they conform to preset margins. It will further place two
spaces after each period and capitalize the initial letter of the
following word. It is heavily advised that you use this command, if
you are unwilling to format your description or background manually.

(this is basically so you don't have to format your desc and role yourself)

These ideas and similar have been brought up in the past. The main reason they have never been implemented into CF is abusability. CF players can and will abuse these ideas in whatever way possible to gain a few moments' advantage.

1. Smotes are especially vulnerable to abuse because it's not obvious who created the emote. Example: Paul kicks Mary in the rear.
Was that an emote by Paul, or a smote by Mary? What a handy way of creating a provocation!

2. Pmotes as suggested are all right, but we have lots of socials with this function already. Besides, "Paul looks at Mary." isn't likely to be misinterpeted by any party. I'd prefer to see posessive emotes added:

Kenji types: pemote eyes glaze over.
Everyone sees: Kenji's eyes glaze over.

This command is very nice for companion mob emotes as well:

Kenji types: pemote monkey screeches at the passing orc.
Everyone sees: Kenji's monkey screeches at the passing orc.

In my other (old?) mud, that's what we use smotes for, among other things. You typically don't include others in your smotes, or at least not provokatory ones, as a matter of courtesy. the same as not doing:

emote leaves east.

then sneaking west.

Or Kenji types: pemote wrath MASSACRES you.

I recall someone introducing this kind of a feature being added to their MUD(There was a TMS post about it). They had solved this particular issue by having the syntax as:

pemote <bodypart> emote

This way, you could still do "Kenji's eyes glaze over.", but not "Kenji's wrath MASSARCRES you." The monkey thing you can currently do with

order monkey screech orc

This goes against the nature of the command, which is to allow others freedom to adapt the pmote to their roleplay. I can't say, in 6 years of using pmote, that I've ever used it for that.

The most common usage is when you're in somewhere like Market Square or somewhere equally populated and typing:

pmote reaches over and tugs on PersonX's coat tails.

This way you don't see "your" in the emote and assume its actually you when, in fact, its personx's coat tails.

That Pmote is a good idea. "Name" = "you" to that person(whose name is Name), "Name's" = "your" to that person and "Name is" = "you are" to that person.

My comments in my earlier post concerned pemote, the possessive emote Forsooth was talking about. Note that this is a different thing.

But... when in a crowd of people you can solve this problem simply by typing the person's name in the emote. You wouldn't have to immliment a new emote system for this.

Say Bob, Tom and Paul are in a room. Instead of Bob emoting to Tom "pulls on your ear" All Bob would have to do is emote "pulls on Tom's ear". Doesn't that solve the above problem? As for creating a system that when you use another persons name in the emote that -they- see "your" instead of their own name, I don't see the overall benefit of it.

the benefit is after adding 2-3 if statements into the code
(guessing), you add a new layer of cohesiveness to the world. I don't
know why but from experience, its much more comforting to see "you"
and "your" when mudding because it typically (at least in my
mud) denotes a more experienced roleplayer who is (typically)
dedicated to success.

It would make things more comfortable for all those peeping tom Heralds who announce over CB "Hey, guys! Jim and Mary are ####ing in our Lyceum!", since they wouldn't see all those you-emotes in there.
