Could someone give me a bit more feedback on what this does exactly? I have it and all it seems to do is flag specific items in a specific way. Am I missing something or is that the intended effect? Thanks in advance.

That's pretty much what it does, as I understand it. It has a certain amount of value as an explorer if encountering items you haven't seen before. Beyond that...
