#686, "IC Justification of the Tell system, and other IC/OOC conflicts."

I was just wondering how players are supposed to ICly explain the tell system. Is everyone in the realm inherantly telepathic?

In addition, is your class and name something that everyone knows just because? I find it odd then when I log on I'm hit with tells from people saying "Greetings <Your name here>! Would a thief like yourself wish to travel?" How on earth did they know my name, and even moreso, my class.

I believe Theran adventurers are all partially telepathic, or inherently tied to the land. Their constant resurrections, tell/gtell/etc abilities, where/who powers, etc, are all based on this Theran telepathic/holistic connection.

Not sure will it improve the atmosphere but...it will be at least interesting for me to play without tells and who command
To 'feel' the world in more realistic manner..to be 'deaf and blind' hehe

Me, I prefer a game that is playable rather than one that is absurdly realistic.

There are times when I think people look too hard at things. A classic example is the old '3d pictures' where you'd stare slightly behind the poster and ho and belold an image would appear created by the colors and blurs on the print. The people who have the hardest time seeing it are the people, who inevitably, stare and stare and stare trying to force it. I refer you to Willam in the Mallrats movie. "When god, when will I see the sailboat?!?"

I bring this up because while I beleive this is actually a valid and real question, I think you're staring too hard at the poster. I'll take your question a bit further in answer that it's been done so far...sorta, but keep in mind....the key to seeing the sailboat is to relax your eyes and stare. In terms of playing CF this means there are times when the best policy is to relax and just accept certain little abiguities for the sake of game balance or needed fucntionality.

Now to answer your questions in an IC way.

There are several ways you can see a 'who' working.
- Your character asks locals what adventurers they've seen wandering the area, and draws up a quick mental image (the who list) of who is around.
- Your character is amazing at tracking different races and takes an eductated guess on who is in town.
- Banners are posted upon the arrival of all great heros (even a level 1 bard is a pretty amazing person to the common peasant) in the city.
- etc etc etc

As for tell? The helpfile really covers it best. I't just an accepted part of everyday CF life....much like the multiple death syndrome that all CF characters suffer. There isn't a real IC explanation because we decided that any IC explanation lead into bad juju and cheestasticness that we decided to avoid.

Hope that helped and remember...relax and stare, don't force it.

taste the fate of the rest
won't you have one more glass

From 'help tell':
TELL sends a message to one awake player anywhere in the world. Though it can be done over any distance, Therans consider this ability completely natural, and something anyone can do.

As for the who list, PCs are considered to be adventurers who come with some (very limited) renown, and are recognizable as such.

Some things just are, Theran's accept them as such.

Brilliant reply. Hard hitting commentary like that is hard to come by. You could have saved me the 43 bytes of bandwidth I just wasted looking at that and not posted.

In a full roleplay Mud I'm to assume that everyone knows my name, despite having never met me, and just knows that I'm a thief?

I usualy refer to tells as messangers like a mistell is "Oops sorry my messanger seem to have consumed more wine than i thought"...
So may be they are little fairys who travel with the speed of light? isn't this a fantasy world?

And the rank class and name list ofn players? May be a rumor of advanturers who travel the land are whispered all about and become so common that are taken for granted and you just rarely concentrate on those whispers and rumors and learn of who is present?

But isn't your messenger sending this second message also?

So is your messenger in the habit of talking about himself in a possessive third person sense? Or would it make more sense to say "Sorry, I've had too much wine tonight. Don't tell master Vandir, he beats me."

In any case, tells are explained in the helpfiles that it's just a natural and accepted thing that no one gives a second thought. Like multi-deaths, recalling (pre-10), and a lack of defecation.
