#645, "Level limits on objects"

Currently level limits exist for when you try to buy an object from a merchant. In summary, a character can not buy a sword from the merchant unless he is at least the minimum level required for that sword. Has there been any discussion for applying level limits to wearing objects as well? Yes, this is an offshoot thought spawned by lowbies wearing uber eq, but it seems like it would even out the playing field somewhat for lowbies (between elites and newbies), although I'd still bet on the elite to win every time.

A level limit for wearing might not make sense for all objects, but it also doesn't make sense for purchasing either. However, it makes perfect sense in the case of mystical objects. Maybe it already exists on some things out there, and I just don't know it.

Our gear system is actually the single most key feature that kept me here.

It's come up in the past and we're not interested in doing it. We like that equipment can circulate through nearly all of the playerbase, giving opportunities for low-level characters to see some of the cooler stuff in action.

General note: Newer players tend to overestimate the importance of equipment. It's a factor in a fight, but there are lots of other things (several more decisive) to worry about. It's best to focus on things you can't "lose"- area knowledge, basic tactics for fighting each type of opponent, etc.

I agree that equipment is not the only factor in a fight, but it's also difficult for tactics or area knowledge to play a large role in a fight if the newbie only survives about 3-4 rounds against an opponent, some of it being lagged.

If there is no interest in applying level limits to wearing objects, why are there level limits for purchasing objects?

People from Selling an item to a shoppy so their Perma boyz can by it.

It's easier for the Imms to notice people passing gear from one to another via char to char, than monitor 30 lines in each individual merchants inventory.

At least that seems logical to me.

In those cases, your tactic should have been to set up for that fight differently, or to not fight it at all. Your area knowledge is used in the running your ass away from the fight so it never happens.

I'm being 95% serious there.
