Why are svirfnebli resist to magic and disease but regular gnomes aren't?

The flippant but sort of true version is that everything that lived in the Underdark had to be cooler than the surface version because the Underdark is scarier than, like, a farm.

But mostly gnomes have advantages that svirf don't and vice versa.
