#198, "Weapon skill + Defense skill %'s"

I would like to know if training is ever turned off by the code, so that I am not wasting my time in vain trying to train against a mob.

I do not think I am doing anything wrong by trying to train my weapon and defense skills more then they would normally be trained by leveling.

I would like to be somewhat above par in this category, because I am tired of getting stomped by warriors.

I only know one stipulation:
You need to fight a mob close to your level.

But, in other posts relating to this topic I kinda / maybe / got these other point from between the lines?:
1. Learning is not affected under level 10?
2. More hours means more learning?
3. Does lack of exping hinder learning ?

What are the other limitations on learning? I am fighting a (perfect match) monster for hours and hours and not gaining anything on weapons. =(

>1. Learning is not affected under level 10?

Learning defenses is capped until level 15.

>2. More hours means more learning?

Only because it means more playing time, which typically means more chances to learn, not because there is something in the code.

>3. Does lack of exping hinder learning ?

No.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

You can, however, learn % beyond the 80, if you are under 15th, if you get a lucky gift when you rank.

I recently had a 8th level character with parry at 83%. Lucky me. Not sure if this is by design or not.

That something was going (or went) into the code to make characters with many hours under their belts learn a bit faster?

I remember a discussion about this, but I don't remember if it was implemented or not. I do know however, that it wouldn't penalize you for not having hours. So it was only a bonus.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Yup. There's a small bonus for longevity, discussed in:

http://forums.carrionfields.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=3&topic_id=143&mesg_id=153&page=

"As your character goes through their lifespan, they will gradually accrue bonuses to learning all abilities. Unnatural aging has no effect on this, and the bonuses do not correspond with the age categories in 'score'. It's enough to know that the longer you've been around, the easier it will get."

As Zulgh mentioned, this can never hurt your chances to improve at an ability.

I don't know where incognito got the idea that you (Avilion) are spamming, but for all those who do practice by spamming, see his response.

As for general skill increases, if you're wondering why it's going slowly, the odds of an increase are affected by a couple of things people somehow tend to overlook: morale (see the last line in the morale help file), and intelligence (see the 'stats' help file).

Both help files have useful info on other things too.

was an idea, though I agree I should have phrased it better.

It was based on his assertion that his skills weren't improving (which suggests he's missing out on two things I've found help learn skills, and his missing out on these implies he might be spamming). Also that he's fighting perfect match mobs. If he was grouped with others he'd probably be fighting tougher stuff, unless he's a 0 exp penalty race/class combo.

I see your point now. If I wasn't of the habit of going solo on low level characters I might not have missed it the first time.

Spamming am bad, practicing while levelling am good, sometimes it's not easy to tell which is being done. (so I sound a bit silly, I'm half asleep from a much needed nap)

The imms try to discourage spamming.

So your spamming is about the least likely thing to work. Try travelling around, grouping with people (which also allows you to fight tougher mobs) etc. If you want to spam, try doing it in short periods that are broken up by something else (ie no longer really spamming).

One thing that seems to help me is dying. I always learn fast just after I die.
