IMO, having a great role isn't the way to get noticed. PLAYING a great role is what makes the imms stand up and take notice. Now, I'm not advocating having no role, but you should certainly be more concerned with fleshing a solid role out in your head and following it through with your actions, than coming up with some ingenous background which is little more than a well written story that has no actual bearing on your character.
Case in point is Nep has said, that an empoweree's sphere should be obvious just by snooping them for a while. Actions speak louder than words (written in this case), and it is those actions that separate the wheat from the chaff.
