I cannot get the syntax right to barter an item for multiple food items, and i cannot find it in the help files.

It try : barter helm for chicken 3

And many other variations, can you please help?

Normally : buy chicken 3

That works fine, but with the barter must be doing something simple wrong.

You just need: barter helm for chicken. From there, the shopkeeper will give you as many chickens as he thinks is fair.
