Chapter 6

Once again she failed to properly respond to the Blademaster, and another rose
in her place to War Master.

She is devastated at her failure, but she continues on her path, for there are
still miles to go along it.

It was a fair contest, and she has no reservations that Noctrea is not worthy
or deserving of the position.

She only wishes that she had been more observant of details, as that would be
of value in all aspects of her Path.

She will rise once she proves herself.

Noctrea may rise, or fall, and that will be her opportunity.

Chapter 5

Since joining the Empire, Inisbel has given her all to prove herself worthy.

And yet she has failed twice when tested by the Imperial Blademaster. Once
for poor memory, the second for not seeing what was in front of her face.

Nothing is ever easy. So she continues on with increased determination.

Noctrea stood a rank below her, but a clear challenger to the position of War
Master. Inisbel considered finding a reason to demote the bard and delay her
rising challenge, but that would weaken the Empire, and as the Law states, the
Empire must come first ("Empire, Sect, Self" is cut into the flesh of her
arm).

So she set out to grow stronger, and prove her worth to the Empire. No
purchase, no pay, as the pirate code states.

She has since donated a thousand gold coins to the coffers of the Empire, an
amount greater than any share she could expect to get on the high seas, and
raising the Blade Sect's rank from third to second in donations. She expects
the thieves of the Shadow Sect are likely counterfeiting gold to stay on top.

She attended an event with a famous chef, and a fabulous dish was prepared,
though the weak-stomached orphans could not handle the mushrooms used for the
preparations. They died bloody, and the chef followed. Inisbel thought the
rissoto was quite excellent.

She became known as the Gutsy Gourmand, albeit briefly.

Chapter 4

To hear the crew tell it, the man stood 8 feet tall, with eyes glowing like a
lich, wearing the fine silken robes of a noble, wielding a sword as long and
wide as he was.

In truth, man wore nothing but a loincloth, and a soiled one at that.

A galley slave, unwashed and malnourished like any of the others around, each
of his bones prominently displayed through thin skin.

Inisbel was at the front of their group, and skid to a halt as she saw the man
standing there, clutching the heart in his hand, blood pumping in all
directions. The others nearly knocked her to the ground when she stopped,
those in the back cursing in their ignorance of the situation.

The captain, who was somehow still on his feet, began pitching forward, and
while he did so, he looked back at the pirate crew.

Watching him fall, she would swear on her beard that he winked at her.

Time seemed to move at a crawl. The slave did not move from his spot for some
time, just stretching his bent spine and cracking his neck grotesquely without
even using his hands.

And then he no longer a slave. Pulling the captain's sword free from its
sheath, he became a butcher, hacking through the flesh and bone of his once
fellow rowers.

A painter, covering the wood entirely in dark pigment, his brush never
ceasing, the paint ever flowing.

Inisbel stared. She had seen her share of combat, from tavern brawls in port
to clashing blades and spilling blood in full combat with ships that refused
to surrender. This was something altogether different. A slaughter of such
speed and grace that she would never have considered possible.

The galley grew hot, sticky with droplets of blood filling the air, each
breath tasting like copper.

Someone was shouting in her ear. It seemed so far away.

Then she was being dragged backwards by her braids.

Chapter 3

Men do strange things in the face of defeat.

Most ship captains, to their credit, once the pirate ship has raised its true
flag, and the victim crew has chosen to surrender their booty rather than be
captured and tortured for resisting, would stand proudly as they were made to
stand trial for whatever cruelties or perceived injustices they had inflicted
upon their own crew, the pirates serving as judge and, only if deserved,
executioner.

This one lacked such resolve, it seemed.

Those lesser ship captains would often lock themselves in their cabins; as if
the pirates would balk at destroying such a fine door to reach the sniveling
fool.

When this one first went below decks, they assumed he would be "retiring to
his quarters" as the crude duergar crew would jokingly refer to it, having
once heard a different captain say as much when he went to hide in his cabin.

Chasing him down the creaking stairs, they lifted their eyepatches once they
were free from the accursed brightness of the noonday sun to ensure they did
not stumble into any traps or the end of the captain's blade, should he find
his intestinal fortitude.

The captain's cabin was empty, so they searched the ship, the rest of the
merchant crew already topside for the pirates to finish their business in
peace.

They finally found him in the galley with the rowing slaves, all neatly
chained to their oars.

All save one.

Who had just pulled the captain's beating heart from his chest.

Chapter 2

Inisbel was born on the high seas, her first breath the sting of salt sea air
and the odor of unwashed linens. Her beard was thick and coarse as her
mother's, a fine sign for a healthy baby duergar. She was branded early with
the mark of her clan: the cutlass and the anchor, a bold mark for a proud
pirate crew.

Three decades long her beard grew, soaked in sea spray, grog, and the blood of
merchant sailors. Her clan was not large, and they fought well, so her share
was more than enough to slake any debaucherous thirst that came to her upon
reaching port. It was a good life, and she had all of hers before her.

Chapter 1

Inisbel was born to a proud pirate clan on the high seas, and loved every hard
fighting, hard drinking, rough talking moment of it.

One day, a normal raid went very wrong when a powerful fighter chained in the
galley was freed and began butchering crewmen, friend or foe.

Barely escaping with her life, and far fewer of her fellow crewmen than she
would like, they returned to the rest of the pirate fleet.

Shamed for their failure and obvious lie of a tale, they were relieved of
their ship and made to serve as the lowliest of deckhands for the foreseeable
future.

Time passed, and the failure of her crew was mostly forgotten, save for the
odd barbed jape.

But Inisbel was haunted by the event. Her confidence never recovered. The
grog was less sweet, the salt-sea air less refreshing, and the nights far
darker, for she recognized their weakness, her weakness.

A pirate's true love is the sea, but what that endless blue means to her is
freedom. And she felt trapped as she never had before.

So next time they made port, she abandoned her ship and her clan, and began to
search for her path.

She wished to be able to fight as well as that man did, better, but with
purpose, and meaning.

Stepping into the city, she heard the Recruiter's call.

Perhaps it was fate, perhaps a lie, but his words spoke to her heart, speaking
of meaning, purpose, and strength.

It was a path.
