Chapter 2

As Coqui worked through the basics of transmutation she traveled, met lots of
people, studied in libraries all over the world, and got into fights. None of
that was exactly surprising. The world was full people to meet and things to
learn and also dangerous. What stood out was how she reacted to the danger and
violence. It wasn't as scary as she would have thought. If anything, she
thrived in it. So after some consideration she approached the Fortress to take
on a Squire's mantle.

There was almost always something to talk about with everyone, or scouting to
do, or some way to use her magic to help with whatever someone was up to, in
between chasing the wicked that were in her reach. While her bee project was
still off on the horizion having these more immediate things to focus on helped
to ground her a bit. To give shape to the days beyond the study of her magic,
which might otherwise have taken up her whole attention. The structure of the
Fortess itself, with Maran acting as mentors and Acolytes as guides meant, as a
Squire, she really felt like she was learning and growing.

One issue though was some conflict around the dark-elf Quivdereayeh and the
Anathema Diachael that both sought redemption. A dissapointing number of Maran
still hunted these two, even though they had shown their sincerity in seeking
redeption to many people. A common, stupid attitude when she asked them about
this was basically, until their aura didn't show as red, they were evil. But in
these two cases, it wasn't an evil person gradually comming to understand and
change, but people that had been shaped by early experience and were now,
currently, living their lives as someone who wasn't evil. That their aura
didn't yet reflect their actions seemed like more of a flaw of the divination
magics than some kind of deep truth. But of course, a Squire is in no position
to seriously push back on this kind of thinking when it's expressed by Elder
Maran, much less the Captain. Instead it's just quietly seperated her from some
of her cabal. Not that she wouldn't help them or fight alongside them, but
going to them for advice or relying entirely on their judgement in any complex
matter was probably out of the question.

Chapter 1

Coqui grew up in the outskirts of Voralian City on a small family farm. It was
idyllic. Helping around the house or farm, playing with her brothers and the
other kids that lived nearby, exploring the countryside, everyone going to the
market together every so often. Her favorite part though was the bees.

Her family kept a large hive and they were the most charming, fascinating,
adorable creatures. Coqui was particularly good with them too. One of many
interesting qualiaties the bees had was a kind of distributed memory. That is,
the bees recognized her and acted differenly around her than her brothers or
parents. Even when it was obvious that the specific bees couldn't be the same
ones. They communcated in some manner with each other things about thier
enviornmnet that included something like, 'this animal is friendly'. And since
it was communication it could be passed on and remain beyond the memory or even
lifetime of any individual bee. However it worked specifically, in effect, they
responded well to her pressence and let her poke around and explore the hive as
much as she liked, and incedentally produced more and higher quality honey too.
When the honey sold well at market she convinced her parents to expand the
number of hives they kept.

Instead of just scaling up though Coqui wanted to experiment and her parents
were willing to indulge. So the new hives were raised differently. Changing the
the bee's diet, for example. Sometimes this would produce colored honey or comb
streaked with color or honey itself with different flavor, scent, or variation
in things like thickness or clarity. It meant every time they came to market it
would be something new for people to get interested in.

After a taste of this experimenting Coqui decided that what she really wanted
to do was create an entirely novel sort of bee. Something related to wild bees
in a similar way that a cooshee is related to wild dogs. Even more beautiful,
somehow, than regular bees. Clever and inherently good. There were, generally,
two ways to achieve something like this. Planar influence and transmutation.
Planar influence would be simpler. A creature native to the Prime that just
lives awhile somewhere where the boundaries between say, the elemental plane of
fire and the Prime are thin would take on magical, firey qualities. But these
changes only remained if the creature stayed in the location. If they left, the
changes faded and there'd be no trace at all in their children. Transmutaion on
the other hand was capable of real, permanant transforation that could continue
on into future generations. But only at its most advanced, where it blends into
true biomancy. So that's ulitimately what she decided to study. A long path
with its furthest end maybe totally out of reach. But what is magic for if not
to reach past what seems impossible.
