Chapter 1

"Finish it quickly, or they will learn your secret." The last
words that Seshaien would hear from his father, before he
forced his dagger to draw the life from the older mans heart.
It was not something that he personally desired, but he
understood the truth of his father's words and so did what he
felt was necessary.

His secret is that he is weak. He would not have succeeded at
the level that he's enjoyed without the guidance of those who
were truly strong. Namely his father. The early years of his
childhood were sparse memories, flickering images of a time
when things were easy. His mother was a human woman, whose
name he no longer remembered, those memories of her and her
sweetness repressed forcefully to forget their warmth. Warmth
made one vulnerable, and though life was easy they were if
nothing else vulnerable. His father took him from that life
at the age of eight, and with all likelyhood his mother's
life as well. Indraen Hun'Sevrir was a masterful drow
assassin, exiled to the surface for some unknown slight to
his house. The life he had made on the surface was one of
wealth and power, earned forcibly with ruthlesness and guile.
He took Seshaien and began to educate him in the trade.

The training and lifestyle that he was forced into were not
forgiving to such a young boy, and those first years were
miserable. His father insisted that his human parentage made
him clumsy and weak, and exposed this with rigourous
training, constantly reinforcing the boy's failings. Yet at
the same time, he showed Seshaien how to overcome, how to
hide his faults with technique and misdirection. But more
than anything, it was drilled into him that he must not do
anything to reveal this secret weakness, or there would be
nothing he could do to prevent others from exploiting it.

Chapter 2

Over many years the soft, weak little boy was honed into a
hardened warrior. Fierce and unforgiving, he looked back
upon that child with disdain. Though still, he was weak.
His training was advanced, but not yet complete, and his
father showed him constantly, brutally, and painfully how
far yet he had to go. Indraen was the head of the Royal
Academy of Assassins in Humsah Mu'Tazz, and his own child
had higher expectations than a common initiate. Soon would
come the final trial for the boy, his first contract.

The details from the guild were sparse, but the course was
clear. The target was a being of some power, so a contact
poison would be employed to momentarily weaken them. There
was a room in the Drunken Efreeti Inn that was to be a
meeting place. The poison would be upon the doorknob and
the first to enter would be the target, the guild would make
sure of it. He perched himself with artistic poise above the
door, and in not very long it opened. A familiar silhouette
entered, and within seconds began to weaken at the knees,
wobbling in distress. He pounced upon the form that he knew
was his father, and took him down easily-a most unfamiliar
feeling. When their eyes met Indraen laughed, "So they found
out about her," he said of the Sultan's paramour, a jealous
woman whom Indraen was simultaneously bedding and working
for. He explained that this was his secret, and now it would
mean one of their deaths. Seshaien took this final lesson
seriously, and ended his fathers life with as much dignity
as the situation allowed. Despite the loss, he felt that
this had helped prepare him for the difficult road ahead.

With his prominence in the guild sealed with the brutal
task performed, he levied his sights upon the Empire. It
was a network of power, waiting to be manipulated. After a
lifetime of hiding his own flaws, he knew that there would
be ample opportunities to exploit the flaws of others. And
if he kept his wits well enough about him to prevent his
own secret from being revealed, an opportunity to enjoy
the safety of the shadows as one who rules the land. Not
Emperor, that position was far too vulnerable, but a
position close to it. Still, since ending his father he
felt a lack of guidance. He meant to seek out one who
knew more about secrets and their keeping than even his
father. One for whom the pain of both their keeping and
their losing was well known, the Lord of Loss.

Role

Chapter 3

Time wears, and for some this means their cherished secrets are
eroded until bare. Others recede from notice, until even the
questions that those secrets answer fade from the memories of men.
Seshaien has met with the patron of the Blessed Lost, or rather
an awkward effigy of His will, and has found Him to be worthy of
dedication. It irks Seshaien that he is reduced to conversing with
a clattering shamble of chipped porcelain, but there is power to
His teachings, so pride must be of secondary concern- at least for
the time.

The work that the Lord requests is satisfying, bringing His gifts
to those fool enough to scoff at them. Not all, though. The
Empire is rife with those who fear losing very little, but for
their name and their citizenship, and fight with the rabid cunning
of a hyena to cling to them. Those are the gifts that He wishes be
delivered. The Emperor, as formidable as he is senile, is chief
among those who sit upon their achievements and refuse His gifts.
An imposing task, to dethrone this Emperor, but how we could swim
in the accolades of his despair. So too within the Empire spreads
a plague, a threat to all Shadows. The quill shaped markings, and
those that aspire towards them seek to expose everything that lurks
in the shade, all secrets revealed in their insatiable thirst for
knowledge. The Lord wishes for these too to feel the sweet caress
of His gifts. Daunting tasks, but not impossible. By keeping his
newfound devotion from the notice of others he may sew the seeds
of discord all the while walking abreast of his enemies.

Time wears, and no longer is Seshaien an initiate, no longer is he
the rash young man that came before Him with demanding expectations.
He still feels somewhat lost on his own journey, but with effort
and instruction draws closer to greater understanding. Perhaps His
offer of information regarding his father, an obscure and cryptic
comment, will offer further perspective upon his path.
