Chapter 1

Saqzawaz is little more than a product of her environment. Her
father was abusive from the time she was born, beating her mother to
death when she was still a small child. Unlike some men whose abuse
is couched in what might otherwise pass for genuine love and
affection, Saqzawaz's father was utterly heartless. In his mind, a
female child was worth little more than what she might fetch on the
open market. So, when Saqzawaz reached the age at which she'd make a
suitable servant, she was promptly sold to the highest bidder.

As it turned out, that bidder was a particularly rich merchant whose
fleet was based out of Seantryn Modan. While not physically abusive
as her father had been, this man was just as cruel. No doubt due to
their kinship with cats, this man viewed Saqzawaz, and indeed all his
felar servants, as if they were merely domestic pets. While walking
about his house he might stop to stroke a servant's head, as one
might stroke a house cat or faithful dog. Always a proud child, this
treatment, perhaps even moreso than what she had suffered at the
hands of her father, created in Saqzawaz a darkness and hatred so
deep that they would never leave her.

Eventually she engineered a means of escape, stowing away on one of
her master's ships bound for the northern continent. Supporting
herself by whatever means were available to her: thievery, murder,
and worse, she made her way to Galadon, there seeking out the
tutelage of the renowned Shinan Pereira. Though still without any
training, she had heard rumors that members of Pereira's guild could
kill with a single strike. This fascinated Saqzawaz, appealing to
her sense of fate.

Over the years she had managed to survive her various hardships by
telling herself that they were fate, i.e. there was no way things
could be otherwise. She was destined to be abused, destined to be
motherless at so young an age, etc. So then, to strike someone down
with a single blow was to be the instrument of fate, the dealer of
death or the deliverer of pardon. In her naievete, perhaps, she
subconsciously thought to become master of her own fate through
controlling the life and death of others. However, ultimately
Saqzawaz realizes she is still slave to her own destiny. It chews at
her mind. She is ever looking, unsuccessfully so far, for some way
to cheat destiny or manipulate fate.
