Ydane the Relentless Flame, Avatar of Destruction
DescriptionAn old woman is here with long black hair and light blue eyes of a hue so faint that they appear almost white or silver. The years have taken their toll and her dark hair is now more white than black. She wears it long, and has gathered it at the back of her neck with a simple bone clip. It frames a face you might consider lovely if not for the jagged scar that runs from her right temple down to her left jaw. You imagine she must once have been attractive, in her youth, with a slim figure, olive skin and a smattering of barely visible freckles. Her age is now fully apparent, however, and deep creases criss-cross the weathered skin of her face. Should she notice your gaze, she returns it evenly with an expression oddly devoid of emotion.

RoleChapter 9 The Nose Knows! Added Sun Jul 5 06:47:45 2020 at level 51:wHidden in the leaves, Ydane sniffed, ever so quietly. Then she sniffed again. Then she inaheld as deeply as she could, completely filling her lungs with air before slowly letting it out again.
Nothing.
Her brow furrowed, then deepened into a full-on frown.
Before her, out in the open, the ugly little gnome's chest continued to rise and fall as he slept. It was a convenient place to rest, this Temple of Winds, though probably moreso for herself than Pininip, who was not able to conceal himself as she had.
By the gods he was ugly!
But, so far as her mortal nose could discern, he was nothing more than a malformed gnome despite all the claimes to the contrary. He had told her, of course, but she dismissed it as the ravings of a mad man. Who had ever heard of gnomes reproducing with goblins?
But doubt gnawed at her. What if it were true? If so, then she would need to hunt him down as she did all the others. She held no delusions about what that would mean. Despite his disfigurement and diminutive stature, his grasp of magic was strong. So very strong. And, to boot, his forms were more suited than hers to direct conflict between them.
Nevertheless, she had to know. Perhaps the nose of an Ancient could sniff out what hers could not? In fact it could. And it did.
Ergush's missive would mean blood. She knew that. Hers more likely than the half-goblin's. But, now that she knew the truth of the matter, she could do naught else.

RoleChapter 8 Sweet Dreams Added Sun Jun 7 22:12:39 2020 at level 51:She steped backward into the foliage and faded from view, then recited the now familiar words to the spell that would slow her movements and bring relief to her exhausted mind. Feeling safe enough to rest, she curled up in a fetal position and let her eyes slide closed. The dream came to her almost immediately: a gnome and an elf sitting in a meadow having a picnic. Just as quickly the urge arose within her to peck their eyes out; to sink her teeth into their tendons; to savage them with her claws. To taste their blood hot on her tongue.
So strong was the urge that it awakened her from her slumber. Stepping forward with her right foot, she sprouted wings and took to the air before it ever touched the ground. She knew who it was the dream referred to, and she knew what it was she was going to do. Collaborate with defilers? How dare he even suggest it. The sound of her own heartbeat thundered in her ears as she pumped her massive wings even faster, slicing through the air on an intercept course with her quarry.
He would flee from her, eventually, the gnome. She was disappointed, but the point had been made. Discussing the matter later, with Jormyr, she committed to not let the free folk become complacent. Stale. Weak. So too she committed to speak with the Imperial priest Fardrin, another chosen of the deity's. The prospect of restraining herself in the presence of a minotaur, and an Imperial Citizen to boot, made bile rise up in the back of her throat, but she knew she would endure it. Jormyr said this priest had wisdom to share, and she would have it. One way of another.

RoleChapter 7 Meeting Jormyr Added Wed May 27 21:19:37 2020 at level 51:She spied the thief standing around out in the open in the middle of the Emerald Forest. Odd, but she was no friend to rogues. She swept down and savagely pecked at his eyes before twisting into that of the tiger. Unfortunately for her, in her zeal to taste the thief's blood she completedly missed the frosty form of Jormyr standing there with him.
Standing over Dershym's corpse she suddenly became aware of a presence beside her. A menacing presence. Realizing who it was, she uttered a hasty (and inadequate) excuse before taking wing and flying off to what she thought was a position of relative safety.
A foolish thought.
No place is safe from him. He struck at her then; not enough to end her life, but enough to teach her pain. Ydane desperately cast about for some means of appeasing the angry deity. But how does one "appease" a deity who thrives on strife? She was dimly aware that Jormyr prized conflict above all else, and so she cast about for an offering.
That's when she saw Pankhero and made her second mistake. An Imperial Citizen and frost giant himself, she had traveled with him briefly before he prostrated himself before the Throne and took the Blood Oath. He too fell to her teeth and claws, and she was hopeful as she offered his carcass as sacrifice to the angry god. The angry god...of frost giants. Oops.
Still, his anger seemed to abate. No lightning bolts struck her; no storm drove her from the skies. She thought the matter finished. At least, that's what she thought until Draveden struck her. A fellow reaver, he ambushed her as she slept, hoping to end her quickly. Smart, but not successful. A message, he said, from the Lord of Strife. She realized the matter was not settled after all.
Later, after she had fallen in combat, Jormyr revealed himself and explained the reason for his displeasure. His priest, Targung, who also fell, proceded to tell her of his Lord and of the true "end" of strife. They spoke of many things, even though it felt odd to stand next to an Imperial Citizen without biting him or pecking his eyes out. Stil, she managed to restrain herself.
Ydane is intrigued by this savage god and his frosty priest. She hopes to learn more. From Targung, as well as Sephmylla.

|
RoleChapter 6 Philosophers and Plowmen Added Wed May 6 22:24:56 2020 at level 42:It is the task of philsophers and theologians to debate whether the children of Thera are born evil or are caused to be such by the fickle whim of fate.
Certainly Ydane has suffered much. But can what she eventually became be blamed solely circumstance? Or was she born with some terrible flaw that caused her to respond as she did?
Frowning, she pushes the thought from her mind and leaps into the air. Her body twists and contorts into the shape of an osprey before she even reaches the apex of her leap.
She is no philosopher. She is a destroyer.
The Tribunals are ineffective. They watch over Thera's protected cities like perverse shepherds, forever preventing their flock from learning to protect themselves. Keeping them weak. Complacent.
The followers of the Light are, by and large, hypocrites. They build monuments in their White City to rival the gods while beggars wander its streets and girls languish in its brothels. They live in a beautiful corpse, content to avert their eyes from the maggots wriggling within.
Look at Jirash there in the shadows, famed of the Holy Brigade. Does he not realize it must surely have been one of his guilded who supplied the poisons that chained her in bondage?
She will burn it to the ground. All of it. The White City with its contradictions; the hideous sprawl that is Galadon; the Sultan's and Empress's gilded riches. It will crumble to ashes. And perhaps, some day far in the future, when the fire within her no longer rages, she will once more wander the forests of her youth and know some measure of peace.

RoleChapter 5 The Grapes of Wrath Added Wed May 6 22:24:10 2020 at level 42:She didn't make it very far.
With blood streaming down her face wher the window glass had cut her, skin crawling as if beset by a thousand angry ants, she dashed out the northwest gate and out onto Shepherd's Row. She ran blindly, like cornered prey, her flight instinct the only thing keeping her on her feet until even that wasn't enough and she collapsed in a small glen just off the road. Lucky for her, the glen was not unoccupied.
It was the home of an itinerant wood-elf healer. The sylvan looked on in clinical curiosity at the pitiable creature that was Ydane as she staggered into his glen, collapsed, and began to convulse weakly as if set upon by some invisible tormentor.
This was not far from the truth.
It became obvious to the healer that Ydane had suffered not only physical trauma but also something worse. Much worse. He dressed the jagged wound on her face, and, settling down, solemly uttered a prayer to cleanse her body of toxins. Then he began to wait, with her, as she underwent the slow, agonizing, terrifying process of detoxification.
She would never speak to him of what had happened to her, and he did not ask, but it was abundantly obvious to the old sylvan that the girl was damaged in more ways than merely the physical.
He spoke to her of the ancients and of the free folk who know them best. He spoke of the warders who protect the wild places and the harbingers whole hold dear the great cycle of death and rebirth. He spoke the names Ergush and Strienat; Amaranthe and Sebeok; Innis and Uller. These things he did so they might create a way for the girl to escape the hell into which she'd been imprisoned; the means for her to pull herself back from the brink.
But he did not speak to her of the reavers, nor did he utter the names Lyristeon or Aylosi, for surely no solace could be found among them for one such as she? Yet, where his solitary voice fell silent, the many voices of the ancients rose up feverishly in its stead.
And Ydane heard. And Ydane listened. And, deep within her breast, a fire began to kindle.

|
RoleChapter 4 Get Busy Livin' Added Wed May 6 22:23:17 2020 at level 42:There was one client during this time who was especially memorable. He was a magistrate, but that wasn't what made him memorable. No, this man was memorable because of his kink. She quickly learned he was a shape shifter when he magically altered himself before taking her. Much to her chagrin she became his "favorite", and, over his many visits, could not help but memorize the words to some of the spells he cast. Sometimes he would assume the full form of a beast while other times it was only a partial shift. Suffice it to say the horns of a bull aren't the only part of that creature's anatomy this man was able to emulate.
Then, one day, when the thought of once more submitting to his touch finally outweighed the prospect of withdrawal she felt rapidly approaching, Ydane spat out some of those dimly remembered words and watched in surprise as her hands transformed into those of a great cat. The shape shifer was as shocked as she was. He paused dumbly, pants around his ankles, for a full three seconds before registering what she had done, at which point Ydane raked her newfound claws across his fat neck and ended his life.
She stood there in stunned silence for a moment while the man's life-blood pumped out onto the floor of the room. The enormity of what she'd done was beginning to dawn on her along with the realization of what the consequences would be. Grady would call the Magistrates, they would come and see what she had done, the they would summarily execute her. For an instant it occurred to her that that fate might actually be preferable to what she would experience if she didn't get her next fix, but something rose up inside her and she banished the thought as quickly as it had come. The only option was escape. Still desensitized from the substance with which she'd been dosed, Ydane plunged through the window and hit the street running, desperate to get as far away from the city as she could.

|
RoleChapter 3 Fear and Loathing Added Wed May 6 22:22:48 2020 at level 42:As it turns out, not so much.
She had never been to the city on her own before and her confusion was plain to anyone with an eye to see. She suspected as much, and so she was not surprised when the young gentleman approached her and asked if he could be of assistance. This was, after all, the City of Light! He was a friendly sort and directed her to one "Grady" who tended bar at an establishment called the "Heavenly Wench". Those names meant nothing to her and so, despite some mild misgivings, she took his advice and stuck out for the northern half of the city.
Upon arriving the first thing she noticed was the shabby state of the place and the rather seedy clientele. Grady was in sorry shape as well, but who was she to judge? Her own clothes were practically rags, and her face still bore the purple marks of her father's fists. Besides, he at least as friendly as the young man in the square had been. Ydane eagerly accepted his offer of a hot meal and a place to sleep. The food was adequate if not good, and it felt good to be full once again. So subtle was the dose that she didn't even the tiredness was drug-induced as she dozed off by the fire.
The next few months are a blur in Ydane's mind. She recalls bits and pieces, but will not speak of it under any circumstances. From what she's been able to put together, Grady kept her drugged out of her mind for the first few weeks and sold her unconscious body like a piece of meat for his clientele to use. After enough time had passed for her to develop a physical dependence on the poison they'd been putting her veins, he allowed her to remain conscious, confident that her addiction and the fear of withdrawal would keep her in line.
To her eternal shame, he was not wrong on this point. She remained in that miserable place far longer than a stronger woman might have. A woman who was more able to fight her addiction; who had some chance of providing for herself if she were to escape. But she was not that woman. At least, not yet. So she stayed, debasing herself each day while awaiting her next fix.

#67196, "Ydane's Role Chapter 2"
|
RoleChapter 2 Death Be Not Proud Added Wed May 6 22:22:00 2020 at level 42:The second event was a dramatic increase in the frequency of orc raids. Communities like hers had always depended on the protection of the Voralian peacekeepers to hold the orc raiders at bay. Incursions were rare, and by and large the villgaers regarded the city guard as heroes. This began to change as the raids came more frequently, and the silence from the Spire only accelerated the erosion of trust. Please from the village council fell on deaf ears. The regular patrols still passed through, but they were not enough to deter the raiders.
It was during one of these raids that Ydane's mother was killed. Her father was working the fields and Ydane was out in the woods, having shirked the chores her mother had set her to. Ydane's mother's death was brutal, but also seemed to have been quick, this particular band of orcs being more interested in theft than sport. In the days that followed Ydane withdrew into herself. Her father, on the other hand, began to lean even more heavily on the bottle, and Ydane was forced to assume all of the household duties. This wore at her in a way it never had her mother, and all the more because she knew how much of her toil was going directly to the local tavern.
So it was that one day she finally snapped, confronting her father about his sorry state. He, having irrationally blamed Ydane for his wife's death, responded by savagely beating her and kicking her out of the house. In truth there was nothing she could have done when the raiders struck, but the alcohol made him impervious to such logic. They would be the last words she'd speak to him, who proceeded to drink himself to death not long after shunning his only child.
Ydane, now on her own for the first time, and with no marketable skills, did the only thing she could think of and headed to Voralian city to appeal to the charity of its citizens. Surely in a city of such wealth and dedication to the Light she could find safe haven?

#67195, "Ydane's Role Chapter 1"
|
RoleChapter 1 The Good Earth Added Wed May 6 22:21:35 2020 at level 42:Ydane grew up on a farm near one of the villages that exist within the larger penumbra of Voralian City. Her father was a farmer and her mother kept house and saw to their animals. Milking the cows, feeding the chickens, etc. As a child Ydane was esepcially adventurous, often spending entire days exploring the pine forests that surrounded their farm. This was a source of consternation to her parents, who saw the forests mainly as a source of danger, whether from the wolves and other natural creatures or, worse, from the orcs that occasionally came down from the mountains.
Except for this recuring conflict, Ydane's early childhood was mostly benign. Unfortunately, around the time she reached adolescence, a series of events would combine to change this forever. The first was a succession of growing seasons in which her father's crops failed, severely stressing the family's finances. While the proximate cause was drought, her father's poor land management practices had rendered their farm particularly vulnerable to the dry conditions.
Sometimes her father would blame the gods and curse them by name, while other times he would blame the land itself, as if it were conspiring to ruin him. Once he even blamed their neighbors, who, having been wiser about managing their land, were not as severely affected. The one person he would never blame, though, was himself. Instead he turned to the drink, which exacerbated both his anger and his ineptitude while further depleting the family's meager finances.
