Chapter 1

I awaken. Why am I awake? It is not yet morning by any means. I glance to
where I can see the light outside and it quickly becomes apparent that there
is no light to see. With a sigh, I realize that once again I've awoken way
too early. This is all I need, what with the dignitaries coming in to the
city in the morning. My parents, especially my father would not approve if
his daughter were not looking her best, especially my mate Kevia. No matter
that I was on my own now, happily married with a nesting of my own. I would
always have a responsibility to preen and look pretty for the court it seems.
was a downside in Arial City to being a child of a noble perhaps, but I'd
be hypocritical not to realize all the perks...perks which I of course take
advantage of daily.

As I moved through the hallway I realized with a groan that tomorrow was not
just any day. Tomorrow was the start of the festival as well. How
frustrating, it was already here and I had been molting only a short while
back. Most of the feathers were back and arranged nicely, but I'd definitely
need to preen much more than usual. With a deep sigh, I come to realize that
once again life is never simple and here I am stuck up early on the day
before the festival with way more preening to do than normal. Its
frustrating, its hard, and it just isn't fair.

I pause. Soft words of incantation drift to me on the air. This makes no
sense, who would be awake at this hour?With a quickening of steps, and a
sudden curiosity...a curiosity that has led me into one to many jewelry
stores...I make my way towards where I thought the sound had come from.
Taking a few turns in our home, I soon find myself in a dusty hallway that is
of little consequence or daily use. This makes no sense. Things are stored
here. Sometimes for the winter Festivities we move and rearrange things, but
no guest rooms are near. But then, there aren't even any guests with us
tonight for that matter.

I stop in my tracks. Light comes from under the doorway, yet it is not
possible. There is no doorway to be seen. No, I'm sure of it.No doorway
is there but a wall in between the other doorways. Yet as I move closer,
incantations again flow from the other side: words that are foreign to me
and not of a language I can understand.Where I have heard words even close
to that before?Ah yes! The court magicians tomorrow will speak similar
words when they light the sky with fireworks! I know little of spellcasting,
but a sense of dread comes to me as I listen.

I feel my way around the edges of the wall, seeking a hidden latch or some
sort of lever or anything that will let me through. Nothing is to be found.
Biting a screech off, I throw my front talons against the wall in
frustration. And they pass right through! This is no wall at all! Slowly,
I step through though every fiber in my body shouts that this is not
possible. What I see next is a scene out of a nightmare.

The room is foreign. Strange objects are littered everywhere, components of
every size and every use. The smells that wash over me are staggering, from
the most fragrant of rose petals to things much more disgusting and
unmentionable. In the darkest corner, strange lines and symbols of a crush
powder of some sort l
