PART II "CLIMBING"

LESSON IV: THE SENSEI

The student has trained in survival, mastered pain, become the predator. The
student has set his sights on climbing. The Sensei is wise, cruel, ruthless.
The student is challenged to a duel against his teacher. They spar through
the night, rarely landing any blows. The movements flow, rolling from one
into the next, back and forth until the student is ultimately exhausted and
defeated. The lesson of the Sensei is the test of becoming for the young
assassin. The student will never defeat a worthy teacher. The student must
become the Sensei to defeat the Sensei. And so begins the final phase of
teaching.

LESSON V: THE TRANCE
The student is taken by ship across the sea to a place where the cliffs rise
up into the clouds. He is given a hallucinogenic tea and enters a deep
meditation. When he awakes, the Sensei is gone. The Sensei will never be seen
again. It is unclear whether he actually existed at all. The assassin stands
alone on the empty boat. The sea slams the cliffs. Sensei Shryker often spoke
of his vision quest, the most important moment of his life. The lesson of the
trance is to see clearly a vision of the pure self. As he stood at the base
of the cliffs of Insanity, he became a being of shadow. And he began to climb
toward the clouds...

LESSON VI: THE LADDER

Sensei Shryker scaled the cliffs through two nights, lost in the depths of
trance. The clouds became thick, obscuring all vision, and slowly they turned
into darkness. He reached a strange plateau, where shade creatures began to
swirl around him. A shadow dragon circled amongst dozens of raptors soaring.
Below he could see wild creatures circling wildly, running in fear. In the
distance he could see the Imperial Palace, swarmed by nightwalkers. The
ladder seemed to continue up forever. He climbed forever, as if trapped in a
dream. Sensei Shryker would later speak often of the lesson of the ladder,
the fabric of Darkness and Order upon which predators rise from the misery of
wild nature and chaos. Only rarely, in great secrecy, would he whisper of
what he witnessed as he climbed further. The lesson of the ladder was the
beginning of The Prophecy of the Shadows. It began as a dream, a vague image
as if seen through smoke or vapor, burned into Sensei Shryker's mind like the
remnant impression left behind after one stares into the sun. Pure blackness.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE LADDER

The Teachings of Sensei Shryker Aoi'Ikita

PART I -- "STANDING"

LESSON I: THE DIRT

The student's training begins, as was the way encountered by Sensei Shryker as
a child many ages ago. The trusted Sensei abandons the novice student in the
forest for many weeks, lost amidst the wilds. The student stumbles in the
feces of animals, swarmed by insects, hunted by beasts. Soaked, starved.
Terrified and alone. The first lesson is a test of survival, nothing more.
Not all will pass. This misery is the foundation upon which the ladder
stands. The student begins to look upwards. He strives to climb.

LESSON II: THE AGONY

Several weeks pass before the Sensei emerges from the fog. Bewildered and
disoriented, the student welcomes a warm meal. A simple yellow belt indicates
his modest advancement. Only then do they encounter the next lesson. The test
of pain. The Sensei leads the novice out of the woods only to find another trick.
The next weeks he knows only chains and torture, despair. He dangles at the
edges of death and madness, until pain is a thing that can be harnessed, an
emotion effortlessly overcome. Only then is the student ready for the first rung.

LESSON III: THE MOUSE

A quiet night in the forest, under soft glow of moonlight. They stand
together, the student still weary. The Sensei offers him a strange gift. A
small cage contains a live mouse. The Sensei gestures for its release. The
student opens the cage and watches as the freed mouse scampers into the
moonlit woods. An owl strikes down immediately, seizing the mouse and carrying it
away into the darkness. This vision of the raptor, a shadow burned into his mind, his
instincts sparked. The mouse is the lesson of the hunter, the transition from
prey to predator. The student now sees clearly how to climb from the misery
of the dirt. He is ready to learn the nature of the ladder.
