Chapter 4

Wise words are rare to be spoken, the air is filled with the bluster of
fanatical zealots and braggarts. These are the times we live in, the face of
the uphill battle that we must face. Xuvian never thought he was among the
wise and ancient because being of the Svirfnebli, it is hard to stand apart as
such, but throughout his travels, battles, and rambles he has come to realize
this was a mistake.

Barely more than two hundred years old, a pittance for some of his people, he
has been recognized as a leader among those whom roam the Outlands, Harbinger
of the balanced branch of Sentinels. He has not taken this mantle lightly and
plans to ensure the new buds that he is to tend understand the hardships we
face and are prepared to grow and defend Her.

As such, he has decided that for those who seek a position, that he should know
the root of their desire to do so and that they should know the roots of the
founding of the Refuge. They may not all have that seething desire to destroy
the unnatural, that make his skin crawl, they may not revel in the whims of the
meandering currents, nor live a life devoted to magic, but they will know what
it means to be the balancing hand of She, the destroyer and creator.

Chapter 3

The difference between Man and animal is an often debated topic. Even within
the depths of the caverns from which I hailed, it was a topic that was
discussed. In the end, the whole conversation came down to one aspect. . .
Choice. Animals and beings of nature react to their surroundings, adapting,
attacking, hunting, all out of instinct rather than actual choice.

They don't have the luxury of choice. Their actions are based upon survival.
Be that procreation, or to prevent starvation, the central drive for their
actions is that they wish to carry on. This natural conglomeration can
continue to thrive on its' own. Each part, each being finding their on niche
and doing so in a specific order of predation.

Problems don't arise in this situation until Man gets involved. I was charged
with penning a letter to those whom I presume to wish to be a part of,
detailing some of the dangers of trade. It's true, I used to hire myself to
many for different errands, killing goblins, undead, and the like. But, during
this time, looking back, I remembered something that became all too painful.

Sutton, a fellow hired by Aldevari to manage their nuisance problem, hired me
to lower the wolf population. At the time, I didn't think much of the task,
and was presented with a fine set of wolf-hide leggings. Why I did it, I
don't know, on a whim perhaps but looking back, I'm able to see the atrocity
that I committed.

I wasn't forced to do it, I wasn't coerced, I chose to do it. Mostly I did it
as to be presented with a challenge and to not be bored. What an idiotic
reason. . . I never have thought too much about things that are in the past.
After all, they're unchangeable, but nothing in my life has wrought more pain
upon my being than the look upon those wolves eyes as when I laid the leggings
from their brethren's pelts before them in sacrifice. I knew, truly, how bad
of a deed I had done and would do my best to never make that kind of choice
again.

Chapter 2

Whether from his upbringing or simply because all Svirfnebli share
some sort of innate, racial memory, Xuvian has sensed a
compulsion over the last few months. At first, he didnt know what
the sensation was, just that on occasion he would feel nauseas and
sick to his stomach. For some time, he didnt have a cause to point
to as to what was triggering the feelings but hes began to form a
theory based on the events as theyre taking place within Thera.

When visiting the Loch of Grynmear, when he was standing face to
face with some foul demons and devils, the sensations he was
feeling evaporated. He legitimately felt good, like he was making a
difference, not just enjoying the waters of the Loch, or the
adventure, but doing what was right. Using his various talents for
magic, he fought on for so long, slaying dozens of the denizens,
standing side by side with Mikheal in the cavernous depths of the
underground catacombs. Although there are yet mysteries of that
place that infect his thoughts, hes decided to move on and return
with more powerful magic at his call.

Knowing that there are others that are willing to heed the call and
fight against those that are unnaturally within these lands, he now
has begun keeping an eye out for them. Somehow, its important to
him that he find others willing to take up the standard, run along
at his side, facing down those denizens of the night, and wade
into these dangerous waters together.

Chapter 1

As the legends go, long ago, the gnomes whom dwelt under ground
and dedicated their existence to the stone changed. It is said that
they lost some of their intellect and wit that identified them as whom they
were and because something different. Xuvian, like many of
his Svirfnebli ancestors is a descendant of those whom came
before. To him though, there wasn't so much of a loss as there was
a trade. The enhanced physical prowess of those known now as
deep gnomes, is often seen as a fall from their surface cousins but
he believes that the chance encounter and choice of dedication to
the earth and stone of his people, can not be easily quantified.

Always believing that there's something special about his life, and
coming to this conclusion instinctively, he embraces the power of
nature to influence those whom are a part of it. To him, the
Svirfnebli aren't the dregs of a gnomish race but their evolution. A
version that has been affected by the magic within nature itself and
been enhanced. And, if this sounds a bit too philosophical, that is
because for the last sixty years of his life, he had been a bit of a
philosopher. It wasn't until recently that he finally gave in to whim,
and he decided to fully embrace the ideal of enhancement and
change, through magic, and joined the Shapeshifter's guild.

Although his internal compass has always pointed him towards the
majesty, strength and richness of the dedication to stone, he has a
sturdy appreciation of water which can erode, dissolve, and carry
away even the toughest granite, given appropriate time. As such,
he decided to focus some of his magical study on its mastery,
hoping one day to swim along with other denizens of the depths.
For now, he is content to wander the lands indulging in their
splendor and majesty.
