Gruntner Grudgebringer the Bearded Bastard of War, Marshall of the Fortress
The fiery-red bearded Gruntner stands steadfast.
DescriptionA squat and grizzled looking lad stands here, hidden behind an impressively long and full fiery-red beard. It may in fact be the most impressive thing about him. Nearly reaching down to his toes the meticulousness with which it is cared for is not unnoticable. It wraps down around a shaggy and unkept face - covered with the dirt and grime of the road, and war. It is so full above his upper lip that it nearly fills and certainly conceals the nostrils of his big and bulbous nose. A long braided section hangs from his lower lip about half as far as the rest of the beard and is sinched at the end with several beads - each adorned with a silver rune. His eyes are a piercing bright blue, the color of a cloudless sky and framed by perhaps the bushiest crimson eyebrows you have ever seen.
His shoulders barely peak out from behind his crimson sail of facial fur - but were you able to pierce it's shrouded magnificence, it would be apparent that they were quite broad and fairly sturdy. They are covered in pauldrons that look as though they have weathered many days in the field and have a dull metalic glimmer. It's not much of a leap to glance from his shoulders to his toes - but you would be hard pressed to miss the presence of his keg-like midriff. Although short, his bulging belly certainly makes him appear as a man of some merit in a tavern brawl at the least. His legs are short and seem to bear more resemblence to small tree trunks, than appendages. They are covered in the same road-weary metallic plate as the rest of his form. His large hands rest upon an enourmous mace that's shaft stands some way above his head.

RoleChapter 8 The Light's Triumph Added Sun Sep 8 15:44:53 2019 at level 51:During the dispersal to the desert of Araille of the members of the army of light. Grunter was faced with much to ponder. He had been studying with Panmorne extensively on the arts of waging War, and been given tasks to take steps to winning the war. Given the recent events of the Fortress, it had become obvious that one of the problems his brothers and sisters had faced - was being able to stop fighting long enough to appreciate what they had been fighting for in the first place! Lady Padwei and her servant Sinjy had described it as 'stopping to smell the flowers'. Gruntner interperated that as 'taking time to enjoy life, in whatever way pleases you.' Flowers weren't necessarily HIS joy in life, but he appreciated much of what life has to offer anyway. In his mind, the point was - esspecially for Maran - to not be so engrossed in the War that you cease to enjoy what you agreed to fight to protect in the first place.
So an came to brew for Gruntner, so to speak. One of his absolute joys in life, was sitting around the Inn, enjoying fine dwarven ales with good company. Or.. really, enjoying fine dwarven ales in good company - anywhere. Grunter is quite picky about his preference for ale, and though he might try Ales from other parts of the world - it was Ale brewed by his kin in Mortorn and Akan which he prefered! An honorable mention of course to a lovely halfling brew - Proudfoot Ale. One of Panmorne's lessons was that after a soldier had finished his war - he needed to be able to find a place for himself in the world that followed, something to do that showed his life still had value. Gruntner began tossing around the idea that he would build a brewery, right inside the courtyard of the Fortress of Light. This idea was two-fold, one he would be able to retire from service as bartender and brewmaster long after his fighting was done. It would give his life continued purpose after many years as a soldier.
The second would be to aid those of the Fortress, and of the Light and make steps toward winning his war by providing his brothers and sisters with a place for merry-making, and to appreciate one another - their service, and what joys life has to offer. Could one simple brewery be a pleasant distraction from the bloodshed and sadness brought on by war? Could one dwarf's passion for quality dwarven Ale, help remind his brothers and sisters that there is yet joy and hope and inspiration to be had within the very walls of their Fortress? Time would tell, but he had a plan - and would need help to make it a reality. He would call the Brewery 'The Light's Triumph'.

RoleChapter 7 Acolytes Added Sun Sep 8 11:15:07 2019 at level 51:Gruntner had begun soul searching during his wanderings in the desert. What was it that had collectively led to the corruption of the Light, and the crystal orb? One thing came to mind - Zeal. Part of the Maran, and Squires arsenal in the battle against the wicked. The ability to unleash furious zeal upon wrongdoers, and vile sorts. Holy fury, and relentless pursuit of the wicked wherever they might be. But perhaps it was their zeal that had seen them over the razor's edge? Perhaps they pursued to fervently, and began to look like the very thing they fought to destroy. Gruntner eventually became convinced this was at least, in part - the source of their woes. There was a time years ago, when even he, in his ire and anger had lashed out at their one bastion of Hope. The now Cardinal, Pohdtid - it did not take long for him to see the error in his words, and that his frustration was unfounded. Eventually, they became close friends - and Gruntner took to the keen wisdom the Cardinal provided.
The Acolytes would yet be the saviors of the Light, and the Fortress. As had always been their sacred duty - to provide wise counsel, and prevent wayward Maran and Squires from making grave mistakes. Their lot had the most sacred duty of all - one that spoke to every person in Thera, would they choose to hear it. Gruntner was a born soldier, and being a Squire came easy to him. But it became apparent as time dragged on, that Wars are not often won by sword and shield alone. And this war, the greatest war in all of Theran history would require more than soldiers to fight and die by the blade. It would require Truth, Honesty, Compassion, and a vision of Hope for the future for all Therans. It would require the Fortress to stand on two legs, Squires humbled by the wise words of Scribes. Acolytes soothing the weariness of tired Maran. Two halves of a single unified force. Gruntner was convinced that in this war, and his war - the Acolytes would yet be the most valuable tool for defeating the wicked. Any poor sod could be trained in the use of blade and shield, and stand against his foes with as much determination as he could muster. But it took a special kind of wisdom and faith to do the job of his brothers and sisters the Acolytes and Scribes. It took compassion, understanding, integrity, and humility. Somethings that aren't as easily trained as swordsmanship. This was the importance of the Acolytes, and would be Gruntner's attempt to fulfill Panmorne's first request with his understanding.

RoleChapter 6 Updates - Corruption of the Orb, Padwei's return, etc pt. 2 Added Wed Sep 4 16:52:59 2019 at level 51:Viya also took her own life during the tribulations, and in Gruntner's mind - these lads and lasses weren't fit to be soldiers if their will broke so easily. The former Marshall, Anyar - hasn't been seen since the Fortress gates reopened, and this worried Gruntner immensely. Anyar was well liked, and of course - a dwarf. As people came to return to the Fortress, Aehwic resumed his post... again - as Captain of the Brigade. A good thing, since he is quite old - and full of much wisdom.
Gruntner continued his studies of War with Lord Panmourne, and felt a better soldier constantly through his teachings. His latest instruction left him to ponder the value of the Acolytes in his War, and to him personally. It also required that he make some real steps toward winning his War - now that things were returning to some semblence of normal.
Gruntner wondered if perhaps offering to help lead the Brigade as Marshall, might be a first step in that direction. Giving him some ability to ensure that soldiers were well trained, and prepared for whatever the wicked might throw at them next. It was a position that he would only take if his peers believed he was the right one for the job. But some part of him certainly thought he might be.

RoleChapter 5 Updates - Corruption of the Orb, Padwei's return, etc Added Wed Sep 4 16:45:02 2019 at level 51:Illegal name, try another. Name: ble events that led to the corruption of the crystal orb. A devious plot hatched by Sel, and executed by members of the Fortress - saw to the certain demise of him and his brothers and sisters in arms. A horde of Nightwalkers spewed forth from the crack before the Fortress gates. Gruntner fought valiantly alongside Sentinels, Squires and Maran alike to drive back the foul creatures. A massive nightwalker issued forth and they all worked together to fell the beast, Gruntner giving his life in the battle.
After the nightwalkers were destroyed, a Pallid Princess crawled out of the crack with a golden aura. She kept saying she must touch the orb, hold it. She walked as if possessed by a strange force, but did not make any effort to clarify her intentions. This left the members of the Fortress confused, and worried. Not long before an old woman showed up to the gates, begging to be let inside. She had no aura, and Tanyl had agreed to give her safe harbor. As soon as she was inside she changed shape into a nightwalker. The tale of this happening had reached all of our ears, and we were mystified as to why our god-given sight had betrayed us. I am sure some of those present when the pallid princess arrived were likewise confused. She approached the Altar and Sel struck her, seeking to end her. Gruntner begged Sel to stop. That he would not slay a child before his eyes. Sel did as Gruntner asked - but it was all a ploy. As the child reached for the Orb, he urged Keldithas, and Gruntner to kill the child before she corrupted the orb! Gruntner stayed his hand. He would not slay an innocent child in cold blood without knowing full well it's intent. Keldithas did not, and struck the child - killing it before Gruntner and Mnementh's eyes.
This sparked a chain of events which would colminate in the total corruption of the Crystal Orb, and the expulsion of everyone from it's walls. The scattered brothers and sisters in arms, ended up wandering the desert - searching for clues and answers for what happened. Weeks went by and they began to reforge their bonds of brotherhood. Guided by the former Prophet, Pohdtid they eventually were set upon the right path by a nomad named Sinjy, Eventually, Padwei appeared in the desert and blazed a trail to the former gates of the Fortress as a Unicorn. She touched the orb with her horn and cleansed the corruption within, and restored the crumbling walls. Most of the former squires and scribes returned and pledged their allegiance again to the Maran. But the ordeal did not happen without casualties. Tanyl had taken his own life, after becomming a Scribe. They also lost Keldithas, who would not be allowed to resume as a squire, but as a scribe again - Suicide. Alfoghurlin - kin to Gruntner took his own life shortly before the ordeal. Viya also fit to be soldiers. -Continued

RoleChapter 4 Notes and Concerns - Leitha Added Thu Aug 22 12:01:51 2019 at level 40:Gruntner and Leitha had become fast-friends in his time with the Squires of the Fortress. He always found her a bit odd - in her mourning and talking about loss, but she was as fierce a warrior as any Dwarf he had ever known - and pleasant company most of the time. She had a strange being accompanying her everywhere they went - a Djinn named Rham. Sometimes, Leitha would be off in the Fortress alone, and Rham would come to visit and converse with Gruntner. Over the weeks and months, Leitha began to appear sadder and sadder, she would often mention things with an offhand way - like that of someone who had been sent to an asylum. Sometimes the things she said didn't make sense at all. Rham came to confide in Gruntner and told him that Leitha had become nearly inseperable with a porcelin mask she had found. Rham told Gruntner that he had several times tried to convince Leitha to get rid of the mask and had been unsuccessful. The Djinn was certain that at least part of what seemed to be her suffering was caused by this mask.
Gruntner as her friend, encouraged Leitha also to get rid of the mask. He offered to take it, and drop it in the Underdark Sea - that she might never have to worry of it's grasp on her mind again. She refused to part with it, or acknowledge it as a possible source of her discontentment. Gruntner and Rham began to devise a plan - though how they would wrestle the mask away from her, neither of them knew - only that it needed to be done.

#64953, "Gruntner's Role Chapter 3"
|
RoleChapter 3 Notes and Concerns Added Thu Aug 22 11:53:34 2019 at level 40:Alfoghurlin was a true dwarf in every sense of the word. He had been a mentor, and a great help to Gruntner as he grew in power in tha Paladin's guild. One day, Gruntner overheard the elfsh Tanyl, and Alfi arguing about an event that had transpired. A week before or so, the now-again Captain of the Brigade, Aehwic - scribed a missive indictating the way squires were to conduct themselves, specifically in the protected cities of Thera. Tanyl and Alfi were pursuing a necromancer and Alfi ran into one of the cities, and attacked the Necromancers Guild Guardian - to flush out the wicked Necrophile within. Tanyl was cleary upset, this went strictly against the orders issued to the Squires of the Fortress by Captain Aehwic. Alfi and Tanyl argued for some time, and the stubborness that is a hallmark of dwarven culture became everpresent in Alfi's remarks.
All of this squabbling worried Gruntner greatly. Alfi was also a priest of Panmourne, and in Gruntner's mind he should have known that the chain of command in an army is Absolute. To defy orders, to step out of formation, to break rank - that was about the worst thing a true soldier could do. Gruntner and Panmourne spoke about this, and the Tactician asked Gruntner to investigate, and talk some sense into his cousin. So Gruntner met with Alfoghurlin - who was clearly displeased with the Captain in general, and did not feel Aehwic was fit to lead. He made no appologies, and stuck by his decision to act out of instinct. Gruntner knew like he, his cousin would be stubborn - but never imagined just HOW stubborn he would be. He encouraged Alfi to remember his training as a soldier, and told him that his actions could have gotten an innocent killed. He knew that if innocents were harmed by the Army of Light, they would forever lose trust in the Brigade, as protectors and stalwart defenders of the innocent. It was not many days later, that Alfi beckoned Gruntner to meet him in the Guild - he said that his fight was over, and he wasn't willing to compromise. He left Gruntner all his worldly possessions, and all his wealth. Grunter was completely shocked and saddened by the dwarf's parting words, but vowed to at least have his cousin remembered in some way. He donated a large sum of Alfoghurlin's wealth to the Jaragh the Knight to care for the orphans of Balator, all in Alfi's name.

RoleChapter 2 Grudgebringer finds a War Added Thu Aug 22 11:40:20 2019 at level 40:Gruntner was a born soldier and thanks to his parents tutelage he knew that he too must find his War to soldier in and develope the necessary discipline and resolve becomming of a dwarf. He first thought to follow in his parents footsteps, and continue the battle for Mortorn. After careful consideration, and a realization that the war in his homelands had raged on for centuries - he decided there must be a larger War to be fought - perhaps a war that was at the root of the suffering of his own people. He then came upon the Fortress of Light, nestled not far from the City by the River, Voralia. He spoke with several squires and convinced himself that this is where he was needed - so he pledged as a Squire to the Maran. This War had been going on for longer than written memory and there was no end in sight. To Gruntner, battling all the forces of wickedness and oppressers of the innocent fell in line with his code as a Paladin. He sincerely believed that if this war could be won, perhaps his own peoples suffering would cease as well.
Gruntner knew he needed more training - and his prayers also required of him to seek the blessings of a God or Goddess. He listened to the priests of several god's and eventually set out to seek Panmourne - the God of War, Combat and Victory. Surely his teachings would line up with Gruntner's ideals and provide him with some valuable skills in both following orders, and leadership. He found the Tacticians shrine near the Dragon Sea on the cliffs of the fields of Balator. Upon meeting the Tactician he was immensely impressed, and inspired. He was a true teacher and appealed to Gruntner's soldier-like sensibilities. Surely he could provide some insight into how the Army of the Fortress might finally win the war they had been fighting for so long. Gruntner was also enamored by the fiery-haired harpist in Panmourne's garden, Sigriess as she was called. Dumbstruck by the beauty of her hair, and the melodies springing from her harp - he never ceased to try and woo the lasses favor when he visited. It was only a matter of time before she succumbed to the magnificence of his fiery-beard, in his mind.

#64951, "Gruntner's Role Chapter 1"
|
RoleChapter 1 Introduction to Gruntner Added Fri Aug 9 13:49:09 2019 at level 15:Gruntner Grudgebringer was born to two unwaveringly resilient parents. Typical mountain dwarves from a somewhat prestigious and long-lived house. His father an expert in metallurgy and forge-craft, and his mother a joyous and humble priestess in the temples of Akan. His parents were both well respected for their years of service in the war effort in Mortorn. Serving directly under Ludan himself. His father fought bravely against the invasion of the dark-dwarves and earned the respect of his captains and kin. His mother worked as a priestess tending to the wounded, and saving lives as best she possibly could. They both showed dedication in the line of duty and incredible resolve in the face of adversity. Once, his father charged into battle against 3 of the dirt-dwarves alone, wielding his hand-forged axe and in a fury. Others who were there that day looked on in horror, as they thought surely his resolve would falter. He knew no fear of death, and he dispatched his enemies with three mighty swings from his axe, disemboweling the lot of them.
After years of faithful service in the war effort, both his parents returned to Akan as highly respected members of dwarven society. They decided it was a proper time to start a family and carry on the legacy of their house. Some time later, Gruntner was born. At the time of his birth, Gruntner was born with a small tuft of crimson hair jutting from his chin. Dwarves are known for proudly growing mighty beards, but usually they begin to groom them in the later years of their youth. It was an auspicious sign. His early years were tender and the sort most children experienced when born to loving parents. He was expected to work hard, and do his share of chores around the house and the forge as he grew into a young man. He was told the stories of War, and the history of his people and the battle raging still in Mortorn countless times by his parents. He was taught dedication, patience and to trust his instincts and be unwavering in the face of adversity by his father. His mother nurtured a tender side focusing on the healing arts, and helping those in need. But she too focused on persistence, and fortitude of body and mind. These were traits his family had carried and made a name for themselves with for generations and Gruntner became proud of his heritage and what his family had given to him. His beard had continued to grow since birth and Gruntner had meticulously maintained it from a young age. It was nothing short of magnificent by the time he left Akan to study with the Paladins guild and many a young dwarf his age considered it a thing of wonder.

Immortal CommentsFri Aug 23 17:28:24 2019 by 'Morius' at level 40 (102 hrs): A solo burial for the Pallid princess. You cried, admitted you could have done more, apologized, and held your own little service. Very good.
Sun Aug 25 10:01:03 2019 by 'An Immortal' at level 45 (115 hrs): An Immortal added 150 exp for: You're doing well in a rough spot! You reported talking to your allies and how you tried to help Alfi. For now I want you to focus on your disbanded troops, show me how you handle this.
Sun Aug 25 10:01:18 2019 by 'Panmorne' at level 45 (115 hrs): You're on the right path for another virtue once all this is done, assuming you keep strong!
Thu Aug 29 16:14:37 2019 by 'Korsgaard' at level 51 (142 hrs): We have come to the other side of the bridge during the dark period of the Fortress. We worked for purity despite moments of gullibility, and we return to the Brigade...
Thu Aug 29 16:15:40 2019 by 'Korsgaard' at level 51 (142 hrs): (continued) knowing the extreme cost if we are to make any future errors away from the light. We have a new understanding having survived the dark times!

Tue Sep 3 18:38:05 2019 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (151 hrs): An Immortal added 100 exp for: You knew well when to hold your hand, so you're learning of Temperance now. Swell job. Next up, scout the Acolytes in your war, and take a step in it, then get back to me.

Immortal CommentsTue Sep 10 12:27:41 2019 by 'Padwei' at level 51 (189 hrs): I tagged you to spearhead a book for the Hall of Light regarding common dangers that can get goodies fragged because of Chirresh, and you seemed kinda defensive/put off by it. Weird for someone who wants to lead the cabal.
Wed Sep 11 17:53:29 2019 by 'Panmorne' at level 51 (197 hrs): You're doing right by me, and I like how you're handling your war. My mark is yours, so don't make me look bad you bearded blighter!

Thu Sep 19 16:29:11 2019 by 'Korsgaard' at level 51 (255 hrs): Been watching this bearded avenger for a while, and I like the cut of their claymore! They've served well in the Brigade as a Maran and helped out during the dark times. Try on the Marshall hat for a while, you've earned it
Tue Sep 24 15:51:00 2019 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (276 hrs): An Immortal added 50 exp for: A rather large donation to Jaragh and the orphanage - seems to be a lot of helpful forties today looking to fight poverty and hunger!
Thu Oct 10 18:46:39 2019 by 'An Immortal' at level 51 (320 hrs): An Immortal added 150 exp for: Swell talk about you feeling like your hands are tied. Doing a good job representing me and your guild, so have some Hope!

Wed Dec 25 18:30:36 2019 by 'Panmorne' at level 51 (468 hrs): You're thinking about retiring and trying to run a bar. Ain't no shame in that, given this old man's thinking. Make sure your lads are swell off first!
Sun Jan 12 14:55:49 2020 by 'Padwei' at level 51 (494 hrs): You're torn about enforcing a rule on the troops that they might disagree with, but you have to remember that leadership has to make tough decisions and armies need order to be successful.
