Chapter 6

Thaedan doesn't usually dwell on the tragic events of his past. It is
what it is. And, besides, those events are what diverted him from the
ufortunate direction in which he was headed. Recent events, however,
have caused him to reflect on them once more.

Some days ago, Jaragh traveled to the Fortress to request the aid of
Thaedan and the few Maran who were on duty at the time. Some children
were missing from the orphanage, coinciding with some other strange and,
ostensibly, sinister goings on. They gladly went with him to
investigate, but were not able to discover the location of the missign
children. They did enocunter a strange talking dall, however, and
briefly a charismatic, but sinister demon.

As it turns out, the doll is the servant of Rahsael. Once this was
known, Thaedan traveled to His sanctum to confirm that the doll's
promises concerning the childrens' safety were in fact true. Once this
was confirmed, he was appropriately apologetic for having assumed
sinister intent on the part of the doll, and Rahsael, and spoke at
length with the creature on the nature of Rahsael's faith.

Thaedan was born under the constellation of Justice, but has suffered
great loss in his past, and currently depends heavily on concealment to
execute the War being waged by the Brigade. It is for this reason that
Rahsael piqued his curiosity. He seeks to better understand the loss in
his own life, but also in a more general sense.

At the moment, he mulls how to carry out a request the doll made in a
way that's compatible with his principles. That is, without harming or
acting cruelly toward any who are innocent. Rashael's faith seems to
allow that Loss can be a teacher, and considers that it is often a
matter of perspective. Perhaps that is a clue?

Chapter 5

Today Thaedan awoke, alone, in a remote corner of the world. He
had bunked up in a guild in the Northern Mountains run by one
Devontair. A roguish sort, to be sure, but not one of the wicked.
In fact, he'd sparred with Devontair many times before in the past;
he linked to think they had a sort of rapport. In any case, except
for Devontair he was alone. And continued to be as he traveled
down the Northern Road to Galadon. Which is when he noticed it.
There at the bottom of his sack, beneath some potions and rolled up
scrolls, was a copy of the Scarab catechism.

How had it got there? Had someone slipped it onto his person when
he wasn't looking? Who would have the skill to do that? Was
someone, or something, watching him? He perused it, briefly, but
ultimately destroyed it before its philsophies wormed their way into
his mind. But the questions of how, and why, are more difficult to
escape. They linger.

Chapter 4

It's been some time since Thaedan joined up with the Holy Brigade.
He's seen some things. He's spilled some blood. Not much, but some.
And in that time he's learned a few things. Foremost, what it means
to support his brothers. To be their eyes when needed. When he can,
to make them more than they'd otherwise be. Thaedan doesn't seek
glory for himself, even the glory of fighting for what's right.
To be sure he fights for what's right, but he's content to do so
from the shadows. From the fringe. If he can empower his brothers
to do more, be more, accomplish more, then perhaps that will be
enough to atone.

He is humbled by the bravery of his comrades in arms. Chiefly
the Marshall, Natesthal, and the dwarf Svelgurd. They accomplish
things he could only dream. He has his knots, and his study of the
the arcane, but it seems passing little compard to the exploits
of those two. And he is humbled by the terrible, terrible strength
of those against which they struggle, most of whom could kill
him in the blink of an eye. The fearsome orc chief, Garfuka. The
Emperor. Mummies. Drow that seem to know where he will strike
before he even knows it himself. How can such foes be overcome?
Thaedan doesn't know, but he trusts that fate yet has a role for him
to play.

Chapter 3

Thaedan was born a kind and thoughtful child, but his cynical upbringing
along with his father's unhealthy obsession almost changed him into
something else. The accident that damaged his mind also thankfully
diverted him from a path that would almost surely have led to some very
dark places. While he remembers very little of that night, Thaedan
recalls perfectly what sort of man he was before hand, and regards those
years with great shame.

Despite ending his magical career, the accident did have some positive
effects. Having to relearn even the most basic skills restored
Thaedan's meticulous nature. His arrogance also melted away, though
that could owe more to having been cast out on the street with no skills
and no money than anything having to do with the explosion.

When he thinks about his past, it is with a profound sense of sadness.
Sadness for what he became, and sadness for the petty lives his father
and brothers still live in the Sultan's City. He regards the accident
as providential, the hand of fate mercifully sparing him from the path
of darkness he was sure to tread. One thing that hasn't changed is
Thaedan's love of magic. Though, now he loves it as one who will never
be capable of fathoming its greater mysteries.

Who knows what strange side effects of his magical accident may yet
surface? Perhaps one day his father might turn from the darkness that
seems to have engulfed his soul? Thaedan has no idea. But he knows
fate spared him for a reason, and he looks to the future with a profound
sense of gratitude. And a duty to atone.

Chapter 2

Being as sure of himself as he was, Thaedan failed to notice during a
routine experiment that his reagants were mixed according to the wrong
proportions. The effects were devastating. The resulting explosion
leveled the wing of the family compound in which Thaedan's education was
conducted and killed several servants. Thaedan himself sustained a
terrible head injury and was left in a coma. His father retained the
very best healers, but they cautioned him to prepare for the worst.
Strangely, however, perhaps even miraculously, Thaedan survived. But he
was not unscathed.

His mind was ... damaged. Whether by the burst of magical energy or the
subsequent physical trauma he was never sure, but one thing was for
certain: he was a changed. His once keen intellect was blunted. While
he was still brighter than most, the unique gifts he had once possessed
were no more. Spells that were once second nature now eluded him
entirely. Gone was the hope that he might one day plumb the depths of
magical arcana, and gone with it was his father's affection.

Or, rather, it was replaced by something else. Disgust. No use as an
agent of the household, nor capable of providing the vicarious
achievement his father so craved, Thaedan became a thing to despise.
Worse than nothing: a constant reminder of what might have been. A
broken thing. A useless thing. Not worthy, his father would eventually
conclude, of even bearing the family name.

Chapter 1

Thaedan was born into one of the many wealthy, aristocratic families
that has held undue sway in Hamsah Mu'tazz since it first rose up out of
the desert centuries ago. His father, in addition to being the family
patriarch, was a wizard of some reknown, although he long ago gave up
academic pursuits to focus on more practical matters. For example,
increasing his household's already considerable fortune. He was never
fully at peace with having prematurely ended his magical progress,
though; a fact that would have grave implications for his son.

Among all his brothers, Thaedan was the one who showed the least
aptitude for the skills needed to expand the family's influence, finagle
more political power and negotiate trade agreements. Namely, lying.
Thaedan was terrible at it. But what he lacked in that area, he made up
for in intellect, attention to detail, and raw ambition. Seeing his
son's his unique giftings, Thaedan's father saw an opportunity to relive
his magical past vicariously. Where he stopped short, Thaedan would
continue, and reach still greater heights.

He was given the best tutors and put under enormous pressure to advance
as quickly as possible. He rose to this challenge, however, and reveled
in the attention his father lavished on him. Whereas his brothers were
more or less interchangeable in their capacities as his father's
business agents, Thaedan was something unique. He was all too aware of
this, of course, and it gave birth to a great arrogance in him. Often
he would treat his brothers as if their service to his father was
beneath him; work for lesser men.

Unfortunately for Thaedan, as he grew in pride he also jettisoned the
meticulous nature that had served him so well up to that point. Where
once he had been cautious and precise he was now sloppy and cock sure.
During this period he also began to tread dangerously close to the line
betwen darkness and light, beginning to discount the worth of those less
gifted than him, and contemplating fell magical experiments of the sort
reserved for the blackest guilds. Fate, however, would intervene.
