Chapter 6

The tailed star has indeed brought so much change, is it even gone? A new
tower, resembling forces of old has arisen to the west of Galadon and still
the winds of change seem to blow. There are forces of work Zinszar does not
care to understand, but his revenge will see them stopped.


Jormyr himself, the lord, froze Zinszar as he appeared next to him in fury
and chaos. Zinszar was quickly named drillmaster, even though the lord
pestered him and brought more cold and fury. But there must be one to balance
the commander and to train the men, and yet the winds of change still blow.
Zinszar will test the men, mind and body, spirit and soul, until they are
hardened beyond what a mortal might consider possible.

Chapter 5

Zinszar was almost numb as he stepped past the giant, thoughts of the past
and possibilities for the future swirling through his head. He had trained so
hard, fought so hard, traveled for what seemed like ages, just to take these
few steps. How anti-climactic it was, standing there in between all the huts.
There was no revelry, there was no celebration, when it was said and done he
felt nothing. That is when he realized that his true test was just beginning.


This village is a strange place, for all it's violence there is a semblance
of calm. The barbarians go about their business with a quiet authority,
almost every action has purpose. It didn't take him long to focus on building
his hut, and learn how to wade into the midst of the thickest battle like his
father used to. The thing that Zinszar is finding difficulty with is their
strange flow of speech. He attempts to constantly inject derogatory comments
or insults when talking about the wizards, but it just doesn't come
naturally. No matter, the attempts to fit in will continue while he trains
his mind and body to become the ultimate killer of the cursed.


It was one night while such training was being conducted that the tailed star
flickered and disappeared. It was nearly time, the winds of change were
blowing and strange forces were moving for power. Zinszar would have to
complete his training as he took his place among the current warriors of
village fighting off the hordes of the cursed, whatever that may bring. In
time all things would be cyclical and he would find a way to enact his

revenge.

Chapter 4

White hot pain blurred his vision as his eyes cracked open. Lifting his head
he was able to notice that the sun was filtering through the thick cloth
curtains, his mother was in a chair against the wall asleep, there was a fire
in the fireplace, and then everything began to twist and swirl.

When next Zinszar woke his mind was numb to the announcement that there had
been a terrible battle. No one could find his father among the slew of bodies
of beast and man. The keep was closed off from those without ranking among
the expedition. His neck hurt so very badly. Where was his father, why did
his neck hurt, and why didn't his chest hurt.

Days, weeks, months passed. Zinszar was well again, could move about
silently, train, and fight. What happened half a year ago seems longer, seems
a different life. His father was still not found but Zinszar had learned some
things listening to those deep in their drink.

It was time for him to leave, the enchanter had closed the beasts into the
portal that he had careless opened. The beasts were trapped, any who had been
to close were trapped, his father was likely trapped. Zinszar would not let
the same thing happen to himself, though his mother and the human in her
would not leave. She was awash with grief still, and clutching onto the hope
that she would see his father once more. Zinszar was done, it was time to
find his way and perhaps grow strong enough to come back and murder that
enchanter whom so careless doomed so many by pushing past his limitations.

Chapter 3

Acrid smoke billowed out of the once hidden doorway on the basement wall.
Zinszar had stared at it for a little while, frozen in the moment with
uncertainty. The door wasn't fully open, and the smoke only flowed out from
the upper portion of the door, he could enter and find his father. The
decision was taken from him as the door burst open and armed men backed out
into the basement. The four of them were all humans and the were all facing
the door... then it happened. The shadows themselves came to life and
ruptured forth from the vestibule and into existence!


Steal and screams is all he heard. This was a terrible idea and his father
might be lost, he might be lost. The shadows themselves were alive! Wait...
no, no those aren't shadows, they might surround themselves with shadows but
they look more like beasts than nightmare. They were things and the men were
fighting them and losing. I have to help! One of the humans retreated from
left to right just before him, the beast was following ignoring everything
else. Now was my chance! Stepping forward I plunge my blade deep into the
living nightmare and feel it shudder in pain. I feel the briefest grin splay
across my face before realizing that the beast is twisting and I'm no longer
holding onto my knife. That is when the chanting happened behind me. Pain
from the beast clawing at my chest and heat from my back are all I remembered
as the floor rose to rest against my face.

Chapter 2

Tonight was different, the full moon was almost red and the night was not as
bright. Dad was just leaving when Zinszar reached the dark doorway of his
home. His father kissed his mother quickly, on the cheek, ruffled Zinszar's
hair as he turned to move west out of Azuremain. The red moon silhouetting
his frame as he gracefully began to stride away. That moment, is when the
screams began behind Zinszar. His father spun in the blink of an eye towards
the muffled screams rising out of the black stone keep. Sounds of death and
destruction seemed to rise from the very ground itself. As his father ran
past, Zinszar knew he was old enough to help, he had to do something.


Running back out of his home, Zinszar clutched the kitchen knife in his
delicate fist. The screams still rose sporadically, though a strange sound
began to thrum through the air. The sound he realized as he ran after his
father was coming from the black keep, it almost seemed like the world itself
was vibrating. Zinszar had always been somewhat reckless, not caring what
happened to others because of his temerarious play. Sliding silently through
the front of the black stone keep, Zinszar moved after his father. It was his
chance to prove that he was ready to be apart of the scouting parties.

Chapter 1

The sun's last rays danced along stone rooftops as darkness began to descend.
The young drow moved along the stone road away from the looming black stone
keep rising seeming to rise with the very night itself. No one stays close to
the keep at night once the darkness begins to stretch. The other boys say
there are rituals and other things that happen there, and the screams that
the grown ups say is the wind. Scratching and scuffling and grunting, though
those are heard when the moon is not so full.


Tonight the moon is full and the night won't be so dark. It almost makes him
uncomfortable how bright these nights are, though his mother says there is
nothing he should be uncomfortable with. She likes to say this as she squints
while the sun is at the its apex, almost as if to herself. Mother is not
fully drow as her mother, my grandmother, was only half drow. So it seems
mother is three fourths, father is full drow, and I am mostly drow. Perhaps
that is why the full moon bugs me some. Dad doesn't seem to enjoy coming out
at all during the day and has long since been a member of the night scouting
parties. That is why I stay close to the house when the sun sinks so that I
can see my father depart.
