#55723, "[HERALD] Daphedee the Last Hraesson, Unshackled Defier of Elysium"
|
Daphedee the Last Hraesson, Unshackled Defier of Elysium
With a mischievous look and floral aroma, Daphedee meanders along.
DescriptionThe willowy figure before you has the tradition look of an elven lady: ivory skin, pointed ears, thin, delicate build. Once sun- bleached hair has been overtaken by the silvery white hue only seen in elves of advanced age, its snowy length falling in tangled disarray over her shoulders. Along her left collarbone nestles a tattoo of a cave viper wrapped around a broadsword, its silvery scales flashing in the light, just visible amongst the patchwork of clothing she wears. Wrinkles have sprouted along her brow, and the corners of her mouth, a sure indication of a bright smile that flashes often. Matching lines creep along the corners of her verdant eyes, their surprisingly clear depths still managing to reflect not only the mischievous sparkle of youth, but also the wisdom and intensity of one who has lived a long, if sometimes difficult, life. A few smudges of violet paint dot her forehead and cheeks, suggestive of some struggle with creativity. Oddly, her gaze is oft darting from place to place like the flight of the butterfly, never resting long on a specific focal point. Accenting her attire is a sash of black gauze, secured around her right elbow with a knot. A variety of floral scents waft from her clothing with every movement, mixed with the heavier aroma of singed hair and brimstone.

RoleChapter 16 Daphedee, Creator of the Damned. Added Wed Sep 23 09:54:25 2015 at level 51:"Do you want to see?"
Daphedee suppressed a shudder at the words. Gaspare's voice had a hollow sound to it now, like it echoed down a long tunnel ending only in darkness. She was sure she'd have to face him at some point, but would it be now?
"Where are you?" It was a silly question, because she knew the answer and asked it anyway.
"The bar."
By the time Daphedee arrived at the Inn, she was absolutely sure she wasn't ready, but it was too late. She tucked herself into the safety of the Lyceum and waited.
His presence was heralded by a small army of undead transmuters, a detail not lost on Daphedee. An especially important detail for someone trying to avoid looking at what else was in the room.
He was.. different. The flickering of light in sockets, the taut, dried, cracking skin.. the air of detachment, even slight madness. Every movement was stiff and exaggerated. Even the sorrow that still somehow resonated around him was.. tarnished. But more than anything it was the stillness that got to her; the kind of quiet seen only in those who have lost parts of themselves to the madness. This was not the man she had stood here with only days before. No.. this was something far more intimidating.
This was her fault.
She had cared enough to try and help him, thinking to find him peace at last. Oh, but she had damned him by her own hand in doing so. There was no peace, no rest for him now. Only eternity and a shell of what once was. She had held the fate of the Emperor in her hands, and she had made that choice. Maybe it would have happened anyway, and his carefully chosen team would have descended into Yzekon only to find they were wrong.. but she knew the minute she saw that throne in the tower ruins, crawling with serpents. She could have chosen to say nothing, do nothing, but it was too late for could haves now.
And so they stood there exchanging pleasantries for lack of a better term, the ebb and flow of words pulling the tension between them. Daphedee was no actress but she performed to the best of her abilities, pretending to shrug off the close-to-home fears and instead shielding herself with subtle lies about how it would all be okay.
... Wouldn't it?

RoleChapter 5 Sindrir-isms. Added Sun Jun 28 10:42:18 2015 at level 51:'You used to be so sure of everything.'
The words kept replaying in her head, a sharp and pointy truth that she couldn't deny. She HAD been so sure of everything, of her life, her dreams, aspirations, certainly a wonderous and whimsical future. But now what? Maybe? Someday?
'You worry too much about thieves.'
THAT was true too. She did worry about thieves, nearly all the time when she was awake. She had visions of Lyra and Skylant tripping over themselves in an effort to see who would get to stab her first. It was a daily occurrence and honestly she was tired of it.
'And Emperors.'
It wasn't so much that she was worried about Emperors, but that she had concerns over her fate in the hands of one. Sure, he had thrown himself between her and the aforementioned thieves on more than one occasion, and warned her of their presence but that was just another chance for her to become indebted. Debts would be paid. And probably unpleasantly. A legitimate fear, right? Still, he somehow made her feel safe. Maybe THAT was the real fear.
'Two Days.'
He said this a lot now, counting down the hours like a dog awaiting its master to come home. Every time he said it, she wanted to scream. I KNOW, TWO DAYS, I KNOW. She dreaded its coming almost as much as she wanted it to be over. An end to the limbo, the unknown. So that she could continue on however it was to be.
'Then I would say most don't really live.'
She agreed with this most of all, and she was one of them. Squandering her time away with worry and fear of the unknown, of thieves, of her potential doom - but everyone is doomed in the end, some just handle the inbetween better than others. She hadn't lived like she should in the interim, in this limbo. If she had, there wouldn't have been a limbo to worry about. She really had to remember this.
'Choices have consequences.'
Whatever the choices were before her, harm would come to someone. It would be her, or others, or both. She would rather it be her. And while all choices had consequences, they also held opportunities. An opportunity to change things? Maybe. To lead a life of far more intrigue than what she currently had? Possibly. Whatever choices she made at this point, the consequences would ensure her life would be far from boring.

RoleChapter 6 'You are the key.' Added Thu Jul 2 10:30:29 2015 at level 51:It wasn't that Whistner didn't have important things to say or was lacking intelligence; it's just that she sometimes didn't make a whole lot of sense. But this statement was something that tugged at the heart and soul of Daphedee, and it really got her thinking. The idea that the world was full of people, and all those people filled with mysteries and secrets that needed unlocking to lead a full and enriching life - well that was all too much! Too many people kept parts of themselves locked away, "living" a reserved life, afraid of opening up to the possibilities. She had already unlocked herself, so to speak, and knew what carefree joy it had brought her. If she could bring the same to others, why wouldn't she?
It was these thoughts and feelings, as well as the research she had done on faith, that led her to seek out Arvam. She'd never met him, and might never have the chance, but she felt a closeness to those ideals moreso than any of the others. So even if the efforts were futile, she would try, because that's what a Daphedee does.

RoleChapter 7 Daphedee and the House of Hraesson. Added Sun Jul 19 11:56:47 2015 at level 51:She had given him an oath, sworn to him and his house, sealed by her own blood. It wasn't without risk, but she had made the choice. It was the news of the wedding that surprised her - at least a little. Some part of her had always suspected that would be the ultimate price, maybe even some part had wanted it. But maybe biggest surprise was how ridiculous an idea it even was. He wanted a symbol of unity, but with that unity would come a great price - the scrutiny she would endure would more than ensure she could never befriend him, help him, do whatever it was he wished. And if she did, her actions would be meaningless - to him and everyone else.
She did want to do those things too; she was fond of him, she wanted to help him, to make sure he was safe. In his time at the Inn, she learned he wanted some semblance of peace in his kingdom, and so did she. They were like two different sides to the same coin; one of the sun, shining brightly, the other the brooding, shadowy moon. But at the end of it all, they were one and the same.

RoleChapter 8 Daphedee and the Neverending Night. Added Sun Jul 19 11:58:34 2015 at level 51:There was screaming; so much screaming. Her vision was worse than usual, the walls were surprisingly cold and oppressive. She moved in and out of cells, past devils and darkness in a way that only an elf of her study could. It was enough to get her here, again and again, in this horrible place.
She slipped just beyond reach of so much death and pain emanating from Satan's constituents, appalled at all the torture and suffering she saw, that when she turned a hall corner and came face-to-face with what she sought, she almost didn't recognize him.
His face was more gaunt, eyes burning a brighter red than she remembered. And the mark on his forehead was cracked, bleeding, splitting open before her eyes. His face started falling away in large chunks. He reached out and called to her. 'Daphedee..' She felt a hand on her collarbone, and an intense burning of flesh encompassed her.
There was screaming; so much screaming.
Daphedee struggled awake to the sound of her own muffled screaming; another night, but always the same nightmare. She reached for her collarbone; the skin felt normal. A mirror confirmed it. No viper, no broadsword, not yet.
But there would be - she would find a way to honor his memory in that way. Maybe then the nightmares would stop.

RoleChapter 9 Daphedee and the Winds of Change. Added Sun Jul 19 11:59:22 2015 at level 51:Time is sometimes a cruel mistress, sometimes a patient one. More often than not, she is an unforgiving one. Time had washed away so many lives, stories, hopes and dreams. She had washed away the intrepid Kregan; had washed away the larger than life Sindrir. She would wash away Daphedee too, someday. Today? Tomorrow? A week from now? A century?
Daphedee could feel the world frenzied all around her like a rough gale, ripping at her clothes, her hair, her soul. Time had changed her; a loss of innocence, a gain of secrets. She found herself slipping away from the beliefs of Arvam, and more attuned to those of Yanoreth. It wasn't a will- ful choice, but an evolution, a product of events and experiences.
Time would wash away all that too, but Daphedee knew words were eternal. How many people had time pulled under the surface, with nothing as simple as an obituary? No great chronicled tales, no stories passed down from generation to generation. Who would remember and learn from what had come before? If not Daphedee, who?
And so she would. Sindrir's last request to her was to document the civil war, the struggles that he and Kregan faced. It was as good a place to start as any; maybe even the best place.

RoleChapter 11 Daphedee, Mistress of the Game. Added Wed Jul 29 12:39:58 2015 at level 51:The game is afoot. She knew this before she ever got involved with the Imperials, but now she actively participates in it. She has contacts in nearly every cabal with the exception of the Outlanders and Scarabs, and even those she is attempting to infiltrate. She does her best to keep track of what wars are waged, who is spearheading them, when they are taking place. It's the kind of knowledge she only had a passing interest in before she met Sindrir, but now there are times when it consumes her.
Yet it isn't for any malicious use; she just genuinely wants to know what is happening, and how she can affect those happenings. It might be that in some ways, the knowledge gives Daphedee a sense of relevance in the world, and the concealing of it a small measure of power. She keeps most of it to herself, knowing many people will gossip and trade the information, potentially exposing her network.
Daphedee is careful about those she chooses to keep close but still enjoys the company of a wide variety of people. Surprisingly, she people she finds herself struggling with most in terms of willingness to communicate is the Fortress. The Maran only seem interested in the hunt, and sometimes the Acolytes too. On the flip side of the coin, Sindrir's legacy has left
Daphedee with a soft spot for Imperial politics in particular.
It's for this reason that much of her focus is on the Empire. She tries to keep constant tabs with Sulneng and Caecilius, and Gaspare to a lesser extent. She views these three as the most open to change and acceptance, and given the opportunity, capable of great things for all humanity. In addition, she has been approached by Crizus, an up-and-coming Fire giant shaman with aspirations of the throne (as they all have), who wishes assistance in improving his speech. Seeing nothing but a great opportunity to gain another foothold in the grand scheme of things, she has agreed and commenced grammar and vocabulary lessons.
And so the game continues.

RoleChapter 12 Daphedee and the 100 Years' War. Added Sat Aug 1 20:59:23 2015 at level 51:Daphedee stared at the many and varied tombstones and larger sarcophagi as she slipped through the graveyard, her poor eyes struggling to read names and dates. Everyday for the past century, it was the same. She bought a single marigold from Alanna in Tir-Talath, chipped away at a pieces of crystal, and made her way to the Imperial Graveyard. Some days Daphedee recognized the pure silliness of the gesture; he was enduring the eternal suffering of the Inferno, and there was nothing but countless skeletons in all those tombs. But most of the time, it was a comfort for her. She missed him, nearly all the time. She barely remembered the days when she was afraid of him, only that at some point that fear turned into a measure of safety even greater than two dimensions. But time has a strange way of manipulating our thoughts, hopes, dreams. These years had both mellowed her memories and amplified her feelings of regret. It was a struggle she kept to herself for the most part, but often in the quiet of night, the past reared its ugly head. She was no longer bound by oath but she was still compelled by it; feeling as though she was the last of a legacy, the last of a House only she would remember, given enough time. And so she found herself every morning, leaving a single marigold and a crystal carved into the Hraesson sigil, amongst the graves in the Imperial Lands.

RoleChapter 13 Daphedee and the Watcher of Time. Added Sun Aug 2 22:27:25 2015 at level 51:Jayashree looked up from the fire at the first sound of soft snoring. The elf had come here often to meditate and pour through voluminous pages, most of which were strewn across the floor of the cozy library. The snoring was a first though. The fela tugged a blanket free and draped it over the soft chair where Daphedee was curled, asleep. The sleep never lasted long. It was always interrupted by dreams - maybe nightmares - Jayasharee couldn't really be sure. The elf never talked about it, she'd just wake up looking like hell frozen over and muster up a smile. Jayasharee kind of liked that about her, really.
Knowing the fela only had a small amount of time before the light sleeper stirred, she started flipping through the parchment, each with the elegant script of a born-and-bred Darsylonian. Several mentioned artifacts of ages past, the Torch of Shadows, the Horn of Fate. She noted the latter was circled multiple times, and the former crossed out. A section entitled, "Third Age" with bulleted points of: mortal must sound, chosen by Horn?, Launfal - holy paladin, is this what we're racing for?.
Another page under the heading "Vampires" had several bulleted points,
starting with "Ortus". A separate list under his name included: minion of Davarrah, affinity for transmuters, has "colleagues", and dislikes religious zealots. Almost as a side note on this particular page, the note "if in trouble, tell Selionar".
Jayashree shuffled through several more pages, many referencing the tailed star, or comet, or the Sphinx. A few drawings of well-known constellations, like the crab, and a passage about "three constellations were audience in previous revolution through sky". A few more notes about a constellation called the spider. Almost every sentence or note on these pages ended with a question mark.
The fela carefully put everything back just so, sat back on her haunches and thought. Maybe a stranger wouldn't understand such a mess, but she'd been around a long, long time, and as an agent of the Silver Mother, this sort of thing was her business. It had happened before. Maybe the star formations had changed, ages come and gone, but history often repeated itself no matter how well documented.

RoleChapter 14 Daphedee and the Prince of Darkness. Added Mon Sep 14 23:02:39 2015 at level 51:The day had finally come; Daphedee had worked hard to enlist an army to join her on the expedition although only a handful knew her reasoning. And so it was with the faithful Heralds at her side and a few of the Spire, Daphedee descended into the depths, circle by circle. Some of the horrors she had already seen on her solitary trip, but she had prepared herself for worse.
Slowly and steadily, their own numbers dwindled. Family became unlucky sacrifices of the Inferno, to devils, demons, all the terrible fiends that dwelled there. By the time the reached Caina, what was once eight fresh and excited explorers had been reduced to four, battered and exhausted. But it was Caina that Daphedee had come all this way for; the eternal home of betrayers of their own blood. It was here, if anywhere, she would find Sindrir.
It was cold. The coldest, cruelest place she had ever encountered. Worse than glaciers, White Dragon Lairs, Frigid Wastelands combined. It was.. Hell. And it was here that she saw the true horror: a sea of faces, frozen in time, in death, their bodies submerged in the ice. The faces were all different, but all the same - filled with agony and eyes closed, frozen shut with tears once shed.
Every pace closer to Satan, she studied the faces, hoping some spark of recognition would appear. But between the sheer numbers and her inability to see well enough through the swirling snow and ice, it was a lost cause. She had expected to see his fierce, defiant eyes following her every step, but all she saw here was defeat and shame. Was he one of them, cowed at long last? It was that thought that stopped her from continuing the search. If this was his eternal life now, she didn't want to see it play out this way. She was sure he knew she came for him, that she wandered this graveyard of lies and betrayal because of him, and maybe that itself was enough.
Daphedee was so exhausted by the time they actually found themselves standing before Satan, she could barely process the beast in front of her. He offered rewards in exchange for souls, an offer Sindrir had taken, and what had it gotten him? Nothing, in the end.
Her answer was simple: No. And just like that it was over. She climbed her way up from the depths and into.. Galadon.

RoleChapter 15 Daphedee, Confidant of Kings. Added Wed Sep 16 23:03:34 2015 at level 51:The stale stench of decay slowly drifted away as Gaspare led his undead army out of the Lyceum. Daphedee watched silent and still, until the more comforting smell of old book bindings and worn pages returned. Silent and still in body, but in her mind the wheels turned rapidly. Fate tugged at the tattered edges of her thoughts, gently nudging her back hundreds of years to the simple action of drawing a single card from a deck with an intense sense of providence.
It was happening again. She could feel it.
This time things were different. She was certainly different from the youthful, naive elf of years past. She was more astute, savvy in her movements and the way she played this delicate Game. She had left behind the fear of a child, and taken on the fears of someone who has seen too much and lost even more.
And he was a different kind of Emperor, one that almost fell into the throne on accident rather than calculated risk or sheer determination. There was no hardness, no sense of entitlement, no expectation of great- ness to be fulfilled. The inherent pressures of the position hadn't worn on him yet, but in time she knew they would. It was up to her to keep him patient and tolerant, kind, and if she could, sane. She would help him along his path, whatever it may be. It was, after all, in the cards.
But hiding further in her mind was another reason: she didn't want to be alone in that place, with no one else to understand, left with her own thoughts. She couldn't imagine leaving someone else alone with that kind of sorrow and pain either. It was there that a true kinship was found, in the sadness they shared in this place of life and death, of fates sealed and hands dealt. Misery loves company, after all.

RoleChapter 4 Curiosity: the Non-Silent Killer Added Mon Jun 22 12:39:16 2015 at level 47:Daphedee loved talking to people and asking questions. Loads of them. It never occurred to Daphedee that this might bring some sort of trouble down upon her. People were people, some of them she liked more than others, and some were more interesting. She never felt like talking would be dangerous. But then it was.
She was invited to attend Sindrir's supposedly imminent ascencion to the throne. It wasn't her cup of tea, but she was prepared to make a hearty Imperial stout for the event. She was to be an ambassador for Herald, and she would do her best!
Oh, but she was a fool. Like many, his intentions were based on greed and power. He told a story of a waif in Hell, who had been given the choice to live alongside a great prince, or to stay with her peasant true love. And this woman chose love. And her family, her home, everything she knew paid the price. She in turn wasted away from the guilt. It was a very pointed story, Daphedee knew, directed at her. Would her homeland's fate rest upon her shoulders? She had no peasant love, but that wouldn't make a decision any easier in her eyes.
Daphedee felt her eternal shield of optimism shaken to the core.

RoleChapter 17 Daphedee, the Soul Revivalist. Added Tue Oct 6 09:18:24 2015 at level 51:Daphedee sat in the quiet confines of Yanoreth's library, tucked into an overstuffed armchair. The glow of the fireplace washed over shelves filled with books, artifacts, and dozing Jayashree who had curled herself up for a nap in another chair. The dreams had stopped now, but Daphedee still appreciated the company and the smell of old books. Almost subconsciously, she touched the mark that graced her collarbone and smiled. The past was never far behind, but what she concerned herself with now was the future.
The way Daphedee saw it, she had two very distinct yet somehow very similar problems to deal with: Gaspare's soul and Khazhrim's soul. She felt at least in part if not wholly responsible for both of them and if it was within her power to rectify things, she would find a way. Daphedee knew though that like the Silver Mother, finding what you sought isn't always how you imagined it.
Staring at the flickering flames, Daphedee decided to start with Gaspare. In a lot of ways, he was the easier of the two: a soul as depressed and obsessive as Gaspare's could only fall so much farther out of touch from reality. She had stood before the man and promised she would always be an ear in which he could confide. Now, a monster to so many, even she had seen first hand what her own unintentional alienation of him had done: more chilling, bitter, mad. Now, Daphedee strove to find the light left in that husk and to remind him that life was just as precious now as it ever was. If she could preserve and foster that part of him, there would always be something worth saving.
As Daphedee's thoughts shifted towards Khazhrim, her forehead furrowed deeper. Khazhrim's soul was a different kind of problem, and one she was far more worried about. Where Gaspare's transformation had been carefully planned and executed, Khazhrim's was the sudden breaking of a man's soul under the weight of some unseen scale. The Inferno had taken a toll on all of them, surely, but none so much as Khazhrim. He was one of the stoutest of spirits she'd known, bestowing charity upon those less fortunate, offering aid to many, even fighting in the crusade when necessary. But now, he too was an empty husk tumbling in the wind, aimless and lost without a single star in the sky to guide him. Daphedee was afraid she would lose him like so many others that slipped away in the night, without even a word to suggest she was supposed to say goodbye.

RoleChapter 18 Daphedee, the Soul Revivalist. (continued) Added Tue Oct 6 09:19:25 2015 at level 51:Suddenly, something stirred. Daphedee wasn't sure what came first: the onset of warmth stemming from the silvery ink of the viper, or the compulsion to go outside, but she didn't question either. She simply sprung to her feet and walked through the waterfall. With the roaring of water behind her, Daphedee stared at the glow of the moonlit pool and the river beyond, its winding course laid out like a silvery path through the night.
Of course! Daphedee thought to herself. I will be the path for them to follow. I will reflect my own light and soften the darkness, ease the pain and hopelessness, and bring them back from the edge again and again. I might wax and wane, I might not be seen at all, but I will always be there. Because that's what a Daphedee does.

|
RoleChapter 19 Daphedee, the Great Pretender. Added Tue Dec 8 20:21:42 2015 at level 51:The wedding had, for all intents and purposes, gone off without a hitch. The audience was for the majority, well behaved with the exception of a young upstart elven monk named Altrana who decided to voice her displeasure at both the newly married couple and the officiant, Daphedee. It was clear that Daphedee's pointed telling of Gaspare's story fell on some deaf ears out there, but she hoped at least some could see the terrible irony of it.
But now her part was over; she stood towards the back of the stage, waiting with carefully held breath as Gaspare chanted and Raltevio cracked the very surface of the hourglass shaped phylactery. Slowly, a hazy white energy spilled forth and wove its way around Gaspare, completing the union. And like that, it was over. She proposed toasts, served drinks, endured Altrana's continued protests during the reception. All-in-all, a pretty routine party, up until the point Gaspare tried to move. That's when the real concern began.
He stumbled, and Daphedee barely contained her knee-jerk reaction to grab his elbow to steady him. He tilted his head, and one of his eyes changed color briefly. And then.. he was normal. It was enough to concern Daphedee though. She had already bit her tongue regarding what she thought might happen once this union took place. That it would largely be disappointing, and not what Gaspare had hoped for. Maybe more worrisome for Daphedee, that it might alter the close relationship in place. But this was it: the ultimate goal. This is what she had helped him for, to find some semblance of love and happiness in a world often bereft of it.
And so, when the crowd was abuzzing, Daphedee did what a Daphedee always does, she smiled like nothing was wrong, and whisked herself away to the abandoned mines to find oblivion in the form of mind-altering mold.

RoleChapter 20 Daphedee and the Devil's Curse. Added Tue Dec 8 20:22:31 2015 at level 51:Daphedee sat in the cozy library, Jayashree tending the fire while the elf studied a piece of parchment in her hand. A list of names. Names of people who had come and gone, but more significantly, names of those who had followed her into the depths of the Inferno itself. A list that was growing ever shorter, day-by-day. She had lost so many of them: Bildot, Olorqualn, but most importantly, Khazhrim.
It had been months ago, when the traveling auctioneer stopped by the Inn, looking to do business and offload some of his wares. There hadn't been anything of interest for Daphedee, but Miakoda had her heart set on a tiny dwarven doll that spoke Thror-isms. Mia outbid the best of them and hugged the doll to her chest in triumph. It was that same evening that Khazhrim stepped forth from his chambers, putting on his best bearded face, trying to hide the cracks of sadness beneath. Daphedee and Mia both hugged him, but what truly made his face light up was that tiny doll and its silly sayings. Mia, like any good friend, gifted the doll to Khaz, in hopes of boosting his spirits to keep trudging along. She had hoped as much for his sake as for her own that he would be resilient and keep trying, that he would bounce back the way he always did when falling upon hard times.
But that would be the last time any of them saw Khaz.
And Daphedee mourned. For her friend, for her own innocence. For every- thing she had given up in that hellish place, and those she had cursed with her own desires. One cannot go into the depths of Hell without losing some part of themselves. This was a lesson Daphedee had learned the hard way, and one that would continue to play itself out in ways she never imagined.

|
RoleChapter 21 Melianna, Imprisoned Ghost of the Infernal Mind. Added Tue Dec 8 20:29:46 2015 at level 51:In the beginning, there was only darkness. Daphedee felt the cold damp stone of the walls brush against her fingertips as she stumbled through the corridor, waiting for her eyes to adjust. A faint smell of sulfur hung in the air, stronger than the normal hint that clung to her hair. She knew where she was, exactly. She'd had this dream before.
And so when she found Sindrir, she wasn't surprised at all this time. She felt his presence ahead long before she saw him. She reached out, calling his name. When he came into view this time, she knew what to expect: his face was more gaunt, eyes burning a brighter crimson. She grabbed him by the shoulders and shook him, whispering, 'Sindrir, how could I do this?' He stared back at her, but said nothing.
As she let go, his flesh fell away in her own hands. She gasped, and looked to him again, but everything was changing now. He was taller, thinner, the mark on his forehead was cracked, bleeding, splitting open before her eyes. His face started falling away in large chunks. But now it wasn't Sindrir's face at all. The cheekbones changed, the eyes turned from red to flickering flames in otherwise empty sockets. A forced smile of gold-capped teeth struck sorrow in her heart and fear in her soul. He did not reach out to her, but only leaned in closer, ominous and imposing. She felt icy air emanate from his shell, for that's all he was now. There was no anger, no animosity, no sorrow or pain, certainly no regard for her. There was only emptiness.
She could do nothing. She couldn't outrun him, she couldn't fight him. So Daphedee simply turned her back and walked through corridor after corridor, her icy escort following closely behind. She didn't know where she was going, but he did. Rows upon rows of cells, the whimpering of the still- aware echoed against the empty walls.
The creaking of an unoiled hinge just ahead told her they had reached her destination. She walked into the cell without a word, knowing the choice was no longer hers to make. As barred iron door swung closed, she turned once more to look into the eyes of her captor, one final attempt to see any part of the man she once knew and loved. His gaze was impassive, one that passed through her, eliciting a shudder. But he didn't move. He only watched, and waited.
Daphedee stood there for what felt like days, but must have only been a few minutes before she heard the sobbing from one of the darkened corners of the cell.
'D-daph..edee...'
Daphedee turned, making her way to the raspy and broken voice, and knelt down. It was a waif of an elf, her body a mess of stitching like a mad man's ragdoll. There was a time when Daphedee might have thought this the very waif that Sindrir's cautionary tale was about, the elf who chose true love over a life of luxury with the prince. But no, this was a different story, and one she knew all too well.

RoleChapter 22 Melianna, Imprisoned Ghost of the Infernal Mind. (continued) Added Tue Dec 8 20:32:17 2015 at level 51:'Oh, Melianna,' Daphedee whispered. 'I am so, so sorry.' And she gathered the sobbing elf into her arms, rocking her as a mother would her own child after a nightmare. But this was no nightmare for Melianna. This was reality.
And as she held the hysterical woman, Daphedee found herself weeping, the slow, silent tears staining her cheeks. Gaspare simply stood, a shadow in the doorway, eye sockets flickering with a cold, disconnected light.
When Daphedee awoke, all was quiet. There was no screaming, no cold sweats, no heart pounding in her throat. Only emptiness. Only the knowledge that this nightmare was as close to reality as it could get. Gaspare had taken Melianna through the Inferno, and whether it was her, or Daphedee, Raltevio, or the Troupe - he had betrayed them all. And he didn't care.

RoleChapter 23 Daphedee the Steadfast, Shepherd of the Stillness. Added Wed Feb 3 19:41:14 2016 at level 51:It was a scene they had played out so many times in the Lyceum, mortal to mortal, mortal to undead. It was the madness again, something Daphedee had never thought she'd live to see once more. Not after Satan, and the Inferno, and the hollow shell he had become. It was as if he had forgotten everything since before the elixir - even the fact that he had already succeeded.
"I should go, shouldn't I." She could have sworn it was only the voice inside her head, but it somehow came out. And yet she stood there, motionless, even knowing nothing good would come of this.
"I like having you here. It makes me feel..." He struggled, grasping for what he must've known wasn't there.
"Feel..."
"Feel..."
He froze suddenly, in the stillness of the mad. Daphedee waited, because now it was too late to leave. Now is when he needed her most.
"There isn't anything to feel anymore," she said softly. "I understand."
But he didn't. He struggled, at first pounding his chest with a clenched, skeletal fist, then scrabbling at his skull with his claws.
She wanted to reach out to him, but wasn't sure how. "Please don't hurt yourself," was all she could manage to say.
Suddenly he grabbed her chin roughly with a cold, bony hand, his withered face and flickering eyes only inches from her own. And it was her turn to be taken by stillness. She knew the moment couldn't possibly last forever, yet all around her it felt as though time had stopped and the blood cooled in her veins, her heart's own rhythmic pumping felt sluggish, moving slower.. and slower.. and slower. Even as he unveiled the secret horrors of the undead to her, as her eyes were caught up in his stare - she could not move even as everyone else around her fled screaming. She stayed. She had to. She had seen too much to run from him now.
"Feel..."
"Feel feel feel feel feel feel feel..." He said it like a mantra, or a running joke. Or something he could no longer fathom.
He cackled wildly into the night and vanished without a trace, leaving a quiet Daphedee alone..but not with her own thoughts.
"Give me the medallion, Daphedee." It was not a request this time. It was a demand, the same way he demanded the artifacts for the Horn of Fate that she did not have.
"Gaspare, please. I don't have it. I gave it to you years ago." She didn't know how she could convince him to understand. It was far too late to change things now.
"What will become of us?" It was a hollow sound, fading away.
"Wh-" Daphedee started to ask, but there was no one there. She was alone.

RoleChapter 24 Daphedee the Last Hraesson, Unshackled Defier of Elysium. Added Wed Feb 3 19:50:36 2016 at level 51:Daphedee sat in stillness in the cozy, quiet library with only Jayashree to keep her company. Her blurry vision wandered: the fire, the bookshelves, her aging, thin-skinned hands. Conversations faded in and out, just as meandering, sometimes with Renize, or Tanzer, or Golthazar. Sometimes Gaspare.
Time was marching ever onward for Daphedee, its pace steady and true, but the destination yet unknown. Yet the destination concerned her, more than she cared to admit. Calcabrizzo was certain his fate would shackle him to the Inferno, and he was equally sure Daphedee would find her way into Elysium, just another spirit in a happy and joyful afterlife. Laswell, the newest of the Heralds, sought to catch glimpses to the other side, where the angels and archons wait to be called back to duty. The very idea was terrifying to Daphedee. But why?
Don't.
That voice in her head knew why. The voice always accompanied by goosebumps and the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. The voice that always said the things she knew to be true, but was too afraid to confess. The things she didn't want to hear. The sorts of things a true Hraesson would say.
Don't let them.
Daphedee knew she wasn't crazy. It was her own voice, of course. But it was part of her that had become stronger, more willful and in some ways, more manipulative - the part she had learned from Sindrir all those years ago.
Don't. Let. Them. Take. Me.
But what were the alternatives? She had seen the Inferno and knew what awaited there. Is that what she wanted? Deserved, even?
You're too old to lie to yourself.
She knew it was true. It was all true. She had made a promise, and what was more terrifying to her than any shades or angels or frozen horror of Cocytus, was the idea that she would die, and break that promise. The promise that she would never give up, that she would always remind him of the good things, that she would never leave him alone. There was only one thing left for her, in the end.
She might fail; in fact, that was the most likely outcome. She knew that too. But she would try until she couldn't. Sindrir taught her that. Defy the odds. Don't give up. Don't give in.
She would follow Melianna. She would be stronger, more stubborn and fierce. She would know exactly what she was getting into. She would walk into the madness to try and bring Gaspare back, one last time.
Because that's what a Daphedee does.

RoleChapter 25 Daphedee and the Heart's Content. Added Mon Mar 7 11:30:02 2016 at level 51:'Choices have consequences.'
The words floated back to her from centuries past. As true now as they were then.
She had known it would be a risk all along. Raltevio had laid it out before her in no uncertain terms. And so when she awoke to tap into the magic as she always did and she couldn't reach it, she wasn't surprised. She didn't really feel that different; she was as half-blind as usual, with a heart still beating and flesh aging all around. If anything, she felt relieved. But this, she supposed, was something people would notice. She wasn't as polished and shiny as the Fortress would like. Then again, was she ever?
And yet even with the consequences laid out before her, she felt.. liberated. There was no hiding from the truth, that maybe she just didn't share all the same views that others of her kind did. She could walk alongside whomever she wanted, if they wanted. Her soul stretched as far as her mind now, and her capacity to live and love weren't tarnished but bolstered. She may have lost the ability to use trained magic, but she still had the kind of magic that her Daphedee, something she'd always had long before leaving Darsylon and joining a guild. And she was still a Herald. For Daphedee, all of this was enough.

RoleChapter 26 Daphedee and the Final Revelation. Added Wed Mar 16 16:26:55 2016 at level 51:She didn't remember how she got there until her head pounded in protest. She blinked bleary eyes and stared up at the ceiling of the Eternal Star. All she could remember was that he was gone.
She was on the floor behind the bar, head cushioned by the pillow Raltevio had given her and that terrible, ghastly hourglass cradled in her arms. Strewn all around were empty bottles and pill boxes, all her loyal servants of numbness now betraying her in one god-awful hangover. With one hand on the bar, she pulled herself up, gently set the hourglass on the countertop and set down three shot glasses. Her pouring had become increasingly unsteady over the years, but today was especially bad and almost as much whiskey quenched the tables as the glasses themselves. She didn't care. One day closer.
The first she poured for Dundlin. It wasn't his usual fare, but he wouldn't be the one drinking it. The second she poured for Gaspare. The third, she poured for herself. She downed them swiftly and repeated the process until she had an empty bottle. She turned around to grab another and caught her reflection in the bottle, eyes red-rimmed with some combination of sorrow and drunkenness. She remembered his eyes, the same way, that day he walked into her life. The pain he tried to dull down with booze. The pain that had brought them together and fostered such an unlikely connection. And now, pain was all she had left of him.
Words from the past, spoken at this very place floated to the front of her mind:
'Those who remain attached to me are bound to suffer,' Gaspare had said.
But she too had said something in response, 'Anyone who has ever loved was bound to suffer.'
Slowly, she turned back around and cleared empty glasses and bottles away. There would be no more drinking, no more pills. No more spores or mold or mushrooms. There would be only tears, memory and the pain of it, the last thing left she could truly embrace.

|
RoleChapter 2 Update Added Thu Jun 18 21:57:54 2015 at level 40:Things have been pretty easy for Daphedee so far, even with her eye troubles. She has made more friends than enemies, and found a home at the Inn of the Eternal Star. She likes most of the other Heralds she's met, but some are a little too sinister or untrustworthy for her liking. Still Daphedee is an eternal optimist, and hopes that everyone will come around to her way of thinking eventually.
Daphedee's duties as a Herald mostly focus on keeping people stocked with libations. She is still getting to know a lot of things about being a Herald and a bartender, but she loves seeing the expressions people make when they sit down after a hard day and take a long hard swig. It has also allowed Daphedee to meet all different kinds of people - both good and bad.
During the quieter times when the crowds have gone to bed, Daphedee finds herself taking long walks in two dimensions - both out of safety from people that want to harm her, but also because she finds she is able to focus better. Her eyesight still hinders her, but she's able to look around more closely without most things troubling her too much.
During the course of her travelings, Daphedee has met paladins of all faiths, and always asks what those faiths are. Faith is so interesting! Only once has one of them asked Daphedee of her faith, and she didn't have an answer. This is something Daphedee would like to research further.
