Chapter 6

The offer from the Elder Prophet caught me completely off guard.
A night of sleep, just sleep, with her warm body next to mine and
absolutey no strings attached. Somehow she always knew what I
needed.

Her room was exactly as I imagined it, warm and inviting with so
much attention paid to every detail. A beautiful spring bouguet
adorned a side table. Sheer silk curtains were drawn closed,
and I couldn't help but think how perfectly Andira it was to have
such beautiful drapes on such a horribly tiny barrack window. A
neat pile of hand sewn silk pillows sat upon the floor, and it
made me smile as I envisioned Andira making her bed, placing each
pillow in its specific spot.

The wall opposite of the window showcased an ornately crafted
vanity, with a beautiful porcelain washing basin. The water
within was still steaming. Clean towels with hand stitched
roses were displayed at the side of the large bowl. She had
taken such care for me, despite the chance I wouldn't come
at all.

Every inch of my body hurt, I pulled away my chest plate and
felt a moment of shock as I looked over my battered form. I
was exhausted and wanted nothing more than to just sleep, but
I couldn't imagine laying in her pristine bed, soiled and
bloody. I took a towel in my hand, dipping it into the piping
liquid. After submerging the entire towel for a moment, I took
the steaming garment and blanketed my face, it burned but felt
exquisite, Andira had infused the water with an essence akin
to lilac. I dipped the cloth again and proceeded to carefully
wash my neck, chest, and underarms - ribs aching and cuts burning
as I scrubbed. I pulled off the rest of my armor and finished
washing every inch of my body. Once finished, I noticed Andira
had set out white sleeping pants, I couldn't help but wonder if
they had belonged to her husband.

Completely clean and the most comfortable I had been in months,
I slipped into Andira's bed, sliding in behind her and wrapping
her in my arms. My bare chest was pressed against her back and
I positioned my leg in between hers. The softness of her skin,
warmth of her flesh, and smell of her hair consumed me. As I
closed my eyes it was no longer Andira with me, but Baerinika.
I felt myself growing with arousal, but quickly came back to
reality. Heated, but tired, I softly kissed Andira's lips
while she slept, so grateful for the beautiful woman next to me.

A good while later I woke, Andira was already gone, but a cup of
tea was steeping on a bedside table next to a plate of freshly baked
sliced bread, still warm and covered in apricot jam. I sipped the
liquid slowly, savored the breakfast, and for the first time in a
long time, felt happy to be alive.

Chapter 5

Why is life always leaving me longing for more? First blessed,
but not fully. Endowed with virtue, but immediately thinking
about the next. Marked and chosen, yet agonizing to be first.

The courage to do or say, pales in comparison to the courage
to endure once all is divulged. I ache every moment of every
day because I dared to speak my true feelings to Lady Baerinika.
The look on her face, the words of explanation from her lips -
thrown at me likes jagged daggers, plunged into the very essence
of my soul. Daring to love was foolish. Daring to love her,
was the most painful mistake of my life. I feel broken and
lost. Why am I not worthy of her love? Why is he?

The Lady speaks to me of dedication and purity - how she is
consumed by her lover. It's clear I'm second and a distant
second at that. Her capacity to give is unmatched, but
the fact she can't or won't allow me a cherished place in her
heart, is my life's greatest failure.

I dream of being kissed, held and loved by her. I pray she
finds a place for me, loves me and values me for who I am. May
I have the courage to endure and thrive. May I stay resolute
in my fight and stalwart for all who need me. May I live my
life in grace, turning the pain into something better.

The complexities of faith continue to confuse yet
amaze me. Baerinika has taught me so much in our
time together. Her grace and purity in the face of
a wicked world is no less than awe inspiring. Yet
I find myself desiring more than priesthood. I
desire her as a woman, but know she won't...

Chapter 3

All that I feel is pain as I stare out at the blurry
figure across from me. Down on one knee, shield in
hand, I try to prepare myself for the next blow, but
know I can't stand much more. Fear wells within me
as the prospect of death draws closer and I close my
eyes ready to surrender. Almost silent, I whisper to
the Lady Jaguar, pleading for strength and searching
for hope. Suddenly I feel a surge of power flow
through my body, holy strength filling me from within.
My diseased body is cured, poison quickly purged, and
broken bones mended. Another moment and my vision
clears, allowing me to look out to my companions.
The Elder Prophet stands in a halo of light, fierce
beings of celestial might at her side. She has all
but sacrificed herself trying to reach me, bolts of
pure mana striking out at her foes.

At the sight of my dear friend, courage fills me and
determination takes over. The Lady Jaguar appears at
my side, her ghostly visage next to me, her hand on
mine and arms wrapped around me as she begins to
guide my every action. I close my eyes as she
holds me in her embrace. Her lips are soft against
my ear as she whispers words in an ancient tongue.
In the next moment, the midnight sky opens and
radiant beams of light flood down from heaven,
searing the flesh of my foe. Suddenly the battle
changes. Judgement has come to the wicked as I
call down the full wrath of the light. Shadows
are flooded out and for a moment we all stand
in the glow of perfect divine light. The Marshall,
Elder Prophet, Sila and so many of my companions that
I have come to love stand with me, but most remarkable
is the Lady Baerinika, her arms still around me. In
this moment I am blessed with feelings of love and awe.

Reality awakens me as the Elder Prophet takes the rest
of my afflictions, healing me completely. Our foes
are dead, the battle won. The Marshall approaches
with a rumbly growl, Andira smiles in that way she
always manages to. Her eyes softly upon me, I am
suddenly back at the Fortress, but changed forever.

Chapter 2

The jungle came to life around Filndar as he summoned
his courage and stepped within the misty ruin. The most
beautiful and dangerous looking jungle cat stalked from
the shadows, approaching him with fangs exposed. Filndar
closed his eyes and stood silently as the jaguar circled
him, sniffing his form. The cat seemed to show no fear
completely resolute with her purpose and absolutely intent
on carrying out her duty. Filndar crouched down, his eyes
still closed, he could tell by the warm breath on his face
that the mighty feline was nose to nose with him. Filndar
swallowed hard, felt his entire body shake, but managed
to reach out, placing a single hand on the cat's front
shoulder blade. A low rumbly growl resonated throughout
the entire ruin and suddenly stopped as the jaguar faded
back into her surroundings. Apparently, Filndar was
worthy to move forward.

Dense does little to describe the vast foliage and
tangle of vines that seemed to consume each step Filndar
took. Despite the physical challenge, he knew there was
a destination to be reached and summoned his faith to help
drive him forward. At that moment, Filndar thought back on
his father, Llalinin, who often made comments on how little
religion and faith mattered. He found himself wondering
what his father drawed upon at times like the one at hand.
Filndar had tremendous love and respect for Llalinin, but
couldn't shake the idea that lack of faith was a major part
of his downfall.

Just as Filndar thought he would never find his way through
the jungle blanket, he saw a brilliant white glow in the
distance. Almost as if the plant-life around him knew his
intentions, it parted to reveal a massive stone altar,
ancient and weathered, but an amazing hallowed structure.
If not certain where he was, the longspear atop the altar
quickly vanquished any doubt. Overwhelmed with emotion,
Filndar fell to his knees and called out to the heavens -
he had finally found the Spearmaiden's shrine.

With barely enough time to take in the magnificence of
his surroundings, the most beautiful voice echoed in his
mind, "You may approach". Filndar instictively knew to step
south from the Altar into the heart of the Ancient Ruin.
Pillars towered over him, white light consumed his field of
vision, but central to it all, as Filndar squinted with
awed curiosity, was the most beautiful woman he had ever
seen - Lady Baerinika.

The conversation was not lengthy, and to be honest, Filndar
will likely not recall the words as time chips away at him.
What he will remember is the feeling of complete warmth and
strength. It was akin to a lost child finding his mother
or parted loves coming together again. What had been
empty was full, doubtful now assured, and in an instant
everything made sense. With Her blessing, Filndar truly
realized his purpose - to be a symbol of Baerinika's faith.

Chapter 1

The mithril walls of the Darsylon palace were always stunning,
but at sunset they seemed to take on a mystical quality unlike
anything else. Filndar became well acquainted with the palace
walls in his youth, for every day he would perch himself in a
tree just outside the stalwart gates and wait for his father. As
the sun would begin to rest from the sky, Filndar found himself
awestruck with the brilliant hues reflected in the gleaming
silver walls. The mithril served the practical purpose of
fortifying the palace from harm, but to Filndar it was far more
than that, it was a work of magical wonder that stirred him
deep within his very soul.

Filndar's father, Llalinin, served in two capacities - as Royal
Knight for the House of Darsylon, but also as a Maran of the
Holy Brigade, annointed by his King and the Light to protect
the righteous, by vanquishing the wretched from the land.

Each morning, before Filndar would stir from sleep, Llalinin
would mount his horse and ride with haste to serve in his
official station. It was never known by Filndar or his
mother, Sera, when they would see Llalinin again. Often,
Llalinin's duty would keep him away for days and sometimes
even weeks. That fact never stopped Filndar from making
his daily trek from their home in the Vale of Arendyl, to
his favorite tree outside the palace walls.

Most days Llalinin would not step from the gates, and as beams
from the sky would change from sun to moon, Filndar would make
the solemn journey back to the Vale. But on the most special of
days, when the Gods would smile down, the mithril gates would
part and Llalinin would step forth, battle worn and exhausted -
always greeted by the loving embrace of his adoring son. Filndar
lived for those moments.

It was on a dark and rainy day that everything in Filndar's
life changed. As he approached the palace gates on his daily
journey, an assembly of sorts had formed. Women were crying out,
children were sobbing and the faces of the elite guard were filled
with rage, something Filndar had never witnessed - Elves are known
for their grace and temperance, even if in the most troubling times.
Within moments Filndar understood the scene much better - resting
on a wagon, circled by the crowd, were three bodies, each draped with
the Daryslon House flag. To Filndar's horror, attached to one of the
flags, was a small golden phoenix medallion. His father had perished.

It was that single sobering moment that shaped Filndar's entire
destiny. He swore an oath, over the body of his Father, that he would
continue the fight, achieving retribution in Llalinin's name.
