Role

Chapter 1

Several years have gone by since i took my place among the chosen few, the Scions. It has been a time
of war more than anything else. My personal feud with the Spire seemed like a neverending circle, and
to fill the Spire with corpses of dead magistrates did not make things better. So i tried to end the
war and now on the third attempt it seems to have worked. I do believe the Spire became stronger and better
able to serve order in Thera due to my efforts. At least i helped to weed out a few corrupt and incompetent
lawmen. I do hope the peace lasts.
My ally from my youth has become the High Priest of the Empire. I once told him that i would accept his
offer of marriage if he held a position of power, but much has happened since that time. I do not think
he is to forgiving of my so called crimes against his Empire. Time will show what happens between us. I
might have to bury him alongside the other imperials.
I have accumulated much knowledge throughout my years on the surface. Some of it i have shared with
my allies in the chasm. I do think it has given me the necessary respect to survive amongst them.
I shall soon make my way to the pinnacle of my guild and allies are needed for that.
As soon as that is done i shall return to Aran Gird. I have not decided what i shall do there. I will
go back there with an open mind and do whatever i feel is needed.

Chapter 2

I have now fought many of these surface dwellers. All from elves and dwarves to giants and humans. Even
halfbreeds and the felars and arials i have bested in combat. It seems that it is not so much the
heritage and race that matters. They are all different, just as we duergars. I will mention one warrior, a
minotaur, who impressed me. He was plagued and blind. Actually he could barely breathe, but he still stood
tall and protected the home of the villagers. I slew him, but later that day he got the best of me with
his white swords. I bounded with him, not so much in words as i hardly understand what he says, but in
blood. I do think with time i will find more friends here on the surface, but as with knowledge they are
well hidden.
I did send a mithril box with fingers to the chasm. I chose mithril as i know many of them are dark elves.
I would have payed much to see them trying to open it. Their arrogance is beyond anything i have experienced
before, but it somewhat tempts me to prove that i am better than all of them. Especially this old drow
arcane disgusts me. He is clearly unable to prove his worth in combat, so he speaks lowly of those who
let the crimson paint the earth. One day i shall put the rot in him. They keep speaking to me often these
days. I have tried a few of them to Lord Arvam as they have no faith. Time will tell if i am successfull.
As an anekdote i must mention that Eshval, the muse, who visited me once in my youth, again spoke to me.
This time she wished to see the blood of an imperial spilled. At the time the imperial served my purpose
to limit the range of those i could fight, but i did as she said as soon as i had gained my new title.
That betrayel made me paint my armor dark red. From now on i shall only carry red armor. It goes better
to my work. Praised be Lord Arvam.

Chapter 3

Even though Hedda fled from Aran Gird she still firmly believes in the principles of order which
the duergars build their society on. Order and strength are two keywords. A city lead by the strong, with
laws that enhances their rule and a way of living that encourages strength in many ways. The only thing
that forced her to leave is their view on women. Which she believes is truly wrong, it should be a about
strength and dedication, not gender. The contrast between Aran Gird and the surface cities are great.
The surface laws have been decided by the weak for protection of the weak. With no other purpose than
to protect trade, merchants and those unable to defend themselves. The Spire who enforces these laws
seems to be lead by fools and infidels. It is not order in the true sense, it is weakness that eventually
will breed chaos. The laws should be reshaped as should the enforcers in the image of Aran Gird.

Chapter 4

The escape through the underdark was not as easy as she thought. Her maps were wrong, and chased by a
cavefisher she ended up in the abandoned mines. After some days she barely made it to the surface and saw
the sun for the first time in her life when she stepped out of the tunnels north in Thera. The vast realm
was now hers to explore. The power which was denied her in Aran Gird could be taken here. She would prove
to herself and to everyone else that she could reach as far as any man. The knowledge she sought was not
found in books and it would shake the fundaments of Aran Gird when revealed. She would find it if she just
continued to be true to herself. She had taken the first step on a long journey. Time would tell if she
succeeded.

Chapter 5

Life has always been hard for a woman in Aran Gird. The male dominance in the duergar societies is so
strong that it only leaves the most degrading tasks to the women. As everything you get used to it, but
for someone who has intuitive ambitions beyond breeding, cooking and tending wounds it is no future to
be seen in the dark tunnels of Aran Gird.
Hedda was born into a powerful clan, but her gender was a big disappointment to her father. She could be
used to tie some alliances with other clans, but nothing else. She was however taught to read and as she
showed some promise with healing the wounded soldiers who returned from the war against the svirfs, she
was allowed to learn from the clanhealer. Her gifts was more offensive of nature than for the healing, so
the old priest quickly dismissed her. Hedda felt strongly that she deserved more than life which was
planned for her, but it was futile to argue with her father. One week after her mother declared her ready
for breeding, Hedda tried to escape from Aran Gird to the surface. Several books and tales had told her
of life on the surface and she knew if she made that far, her life could be all that she ever dreamed of.
