Unathalese Kel'Nardina the Spectre
DescriptionA pale thin visage meets your gaze, her face, too gaunt to be considered pretty. Her hair is an unhealthy color of white, like parchment aged to the point of crumbling. The violet eyes of her race seem flat and devoid of anything that may be considered compassion, or even morality. Her thin lips appear bloodless and barely capable of expressing anything, yet the edge of one side curls in a derisive sneer. She is clothed in dark robes, a deep cowl sits back on her head poised to be pulled forward should the need for darkness be needed. Her sleeves are neatly folded back up to the elbow revealing her pale skin, the dark spiderweb of her veins prominent as they weave their way down to her almost skeletal hands. Her fingernails are thick and yellowed, almost like claws at the tip of each thin finger. In appears she seems barely alive save for the fact she moves.

RoleChapter 14 The Final Step of Life Added Fri Apr 11 23:22:09 2014 at level 47:****Written on what appears to be cure skin fine dark runes written in blood detail a strange meeting*** I have finally succeed in reaching the conservator. My sojourn into the dark woods taught me much, the spirit I found there I believe holds the key to transformation into the more feral of the undead forms. While we did not speak, I knew that should I have wished it I could have taken the step. But, something, some burning desire, held me back. Ways it caprice? Folly? Have I risked everything for a taste of greater power? Yes, is this not how I have lived my existence? I have risked much for knowledge, many failures have taken their toll and even now the banshees wail in anticipation of my death. It may well be this flesh fails me before I even meet the Conservator again, but if it is so I shall not regret my choices. I have lived an existence which could have never been if not for the dark powers, and the taste of it drives me still. One item eludes me completely, another, while I began in great confidence of my knowledge of it, now eats at my mind with doubt. The last was in my possession mere days ago, only to be lost after an untimely death. It will be difficult to regain, but at least I know with certainty it is what the Conservator seeks. I will cajole, wheel and deal with any who may be able to assist me in my desires. I must not fail! ===============

RoleChapter 12 Errand Boy Added Sat Feb 22 23:14:04 2014 at level 47:Unathalese stares at the sphere, her dead, flat eyes reflected in its mirrored surface. All attempts to divine its nature had failed, even the most powerful spells of the conjurers, drawing on their bonds from the other planes had revealed little. Yet the sphere of diamond set with its blood red rubies fascinated her, something within it called to her blood, quickened its sluggish pace, and brought a sense of thirst to her throat. Something within, hidden and obscure, that may unlock her curse, not in a way that purged it from her body, but instead set it free to feed.
With one last glance, she returns to her scroll finishing the last few lines. The next step will be to have it delivered to Kharzandra along with the sphere and she had just the errand boy in mind. Corlx, it was rumored had the ability to silently step into the most dangerous of company. She would fob him off and parley him with empty promises so that he would do her bidding. Then she would wait. Either the Dark Elven Vampire would respond or remain silent, and from that she would formulate her next steps.
Sealing the scroll with blood red wax, she sets her plan in motion.

RoleChapter 10 A Tattered Notebook II Added Mon Feb 10 16:14:48 2014 at level 41:Barovia -------- -Von Zarovich - Vampire Lord of Barovia. There is evidence here that he too was once mortal, the keep shows signs of a previous life, perhaps even a marriage? There is a Lich lord who has taken residence in a small cottage near the keep. Xoltrindar brokers no intrusion, his welcome is abrupt and severe. Also below the keep there are signs of a mummy, of somewhat feral nature, and an even more feral wight in the upper halls. There is certainly power here, showing all forms of the becoming states. I shall attempt to gain more from the Lord if he will deign to speak with me.
Galadon Mausoleum ----------------- -Shadar Lunn His power is immense and his dominion over the mausoleum is unquestioned. --------------The next passage is circled several times--------------- -Kharzandra Whether she has connection to Shadar Lunn is unknown as yet, but she may indeed be the greatest hope that what I seek can be achieved. There is little doubt she was once mortal as we share a similar generic heritage. Surely this shows that this frail physical shell can become something more? When I am strong enough I shall approach her and try to glean the cause and methodology of her transition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -the dark priest It appears he is one of Lloth's disciples, as he wears her hated insignia. If he knew of my loathing for all her minions he would be no source of information. Maybe I will dissect his undead flesh an try to establish how the blood he feeds upon is used once ingested.
-There are also several young vampires here, they seem weak and incapable of anything but mindless hunger.

RoleChapter 9 A Tattered Notebook Added Mon Feb 10 16:12:04 2014 at level 41:A Tattered Notebook
Unathalese poured over her notebook, now somewhat tattered and worn from the constant page turning and edits. Pages crammed with text, some crossed out or amended, margins with writing a different angles as she has added minuscule observations or completely revoke previous theories and conjecture. She turns another page, marked with a black ribbon and slides her thin index finger down the list.
High Tower of Sorcery --------------------- There is a strong-willed vampire here, he has taken control of a young necromancer. Could this be evidence of the vampiric ability to control the mind of susceptible and weak-willed creatures? Already I have found myself able to control the undead weaker than I, can this also be a possibility with the living?? (scribbles in the margin read: Will is as important as intelligence here, the will indicates a mastery to define the world and mold others to ones vision and desires)
Mansion of Twilight ------------------- -Kelnarn --Letanel* --Dalana* --Slatia* --Anrel* --Tlondia* All are found within the Mansion of Twilight. The principle vampire is Kelnarn who is reticent about sharing his knowledge................................(jotted in the margin) See notes on the sphere found below in the earth.
*The above all seem to have been subjugated or turned by Kelnarn, their transition at nightfall is remarkable, yet they seem to have no insight into their fate or the process of their becoming.

RoleChapter 8 Notes and Observations Added Mon Feb 10 16:07:59 2014 at level 41:My studies have taken me far afield and I have discovered certain lore which may be pertinent to my condition. There are indeed those who inhabit the overland who are fully Vampire, some with a greater or lesser degree of sentient thought. Chief amongst them are the Vampire Shadar Lunn and a dark priestess Kharzandra, who dwell within the mausoleum of Galadon. Others are the Lord Von Zarovich in the lands of Barovia and Kelnarn within a mansion to the north, if they are somehow connected I do not know. There are lesser vampire spirits whom I have come across, but they are more feral in nature. Interestingly enough not all of these fully evolved vampire are dedicated to the necromancer guild. Could it be that their transition is connected to the ancient bloodlines? Those not created or who went trough a transition from mortality, but have always been nosferatu? I must delve further. I found a strange orb below the Mansion of Twilight, its purpose is veiled, yet I sense within it something strange.
The orcs it seem have some ritual, from whence they are derived I cannot yet say. They have developed a process of exsanguiation, whereby the drain elfin blood and can draw on its potency when needed. Where did this lore come from? Is it an artifact of vampiric acts? My own touch has become potent, but will only draw from the still living flesh. The orcs draw from the dead.
Another interesting ritual some Orcs have is the ability to place themselves within a grave, appearing as dead, they rise fully healed. Surely this is a mere mimicry of the potent abilities of the vampire race? Would that I could find solace in the dead earth to hide from that hated orb in the sky! It's light becomes more and more troublesome to me as I grow in power. It may well soon be that even my cowl, with the clouds and rain may soon not be enough for me to be able to bear its light. I shall try to remain underground during it's time in the sky. I am told by the guild that I might be able to develop more potent spells in the dark of night, so this could be something to consider.
I continue to take solace in the night and dark recess of the crypt. I have talked at length with various masters of the guild and one in particular has detailed nuances of the darkness which enable me to cast my enchantments with greater potency when the hated orb of fire is far from my sight. We will see if this also results in the strengthening of my minions. Soon the shadows will answer my call and I will delve into their powers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- **Note this is the last of the re-added as they all disappeared Three times!!**

RoleChapter 7 Prayers in the Dark Added Mon Feb 10 16:05:28 2014 at level 41:The heavens are silent. The Shrine of The Lord of Tyranny is a still as a grave, but Unathalese is used to the quiet communing of the dead. The hunger which burns in her soul is not for baubles, it is for the dark and terrible power which flickers in her blood. Her envy burns, but not for the living, not for those who strut on the world's stage like a rooster boasting their prowess. She is envious of the salient power of those who have passed beyond the need for mortal things, who hunger not for the trappings of superficial life. She wishes to strip away the veil and reveal that which lies within, the truth of power, the truth of life beyond death.
So it is she continues to visit the Shrine of Enlilth, though she fears her prayers have dissipated into the ethers and remain unheard. Perhaps her task is indeed one which she will complete alone, but perhaps also there it truth in the philosophy that it is the faithful who bring strength to the Gods. There are none she knows who give praise to the name of Enlilth, mayhaps it will be her voice which raises him from his dark slumber. The Voice of the Scarab preached that she should Embrace the Dark, but she and darkness were as intimate as lovers, since the day of her re-birth. Perhaps it was the word of the Voice which caused the doors of the Temple to swing open. So then shall she continue to whisper her prayers in the darkness to the Lord of Tyranny, in hopes they will stir him. Slowly her powers have grown, yet still her flesh is prey to the villagers. She will feed on their blood and from then regain her vitality. When the time is right her true form will be revealed and Thera will know fear in the darkness.

RoleChapter 6 The Blood Moon Coven Added Mon Feb 10 15:58:00 2014 at level 41:There were few who knew of the existence of the Blood Moon Coven, its origins were dark and shrouded in antiquity. Their number were never more than seven some members of the coven remember times times from ages past, having used the Coven's secrets to live life of extraordinary length. Seladrine was one such, she had been the leader of the Coven for what seemed a millennia. The old crone disappearing from her role in one noble house of Teth Azaleth and revitalizing herself on the nascent blood of infants, only to reappear as a youthful girl to take up duties elsewhere.
"What am I?!" Unathalese's question was plain and straight forward. She always seemed to get to the heart of the matter with her questions. Seladrine had been instructing her in matters of embalming flesh when the question was asked. "You are a child of the Blood Moon" Seladrine replied simply. "You were born dead, and I gave you life through blood." Unathalese pondered the statement. "But I am not completely alive I think." The child's insight and matter of fact statement were at times surprising. "No." Seladrine replied, "but neither are you Dead or Undead. Like me you are at a place envied by many and despised by even more. Yet you have not become what the Coven have sought for an epoch." Unathalese's flat eyes regarded her mentor as she pondered her words. "There are those who have gone through the rituals and become undead. Lichs for those with the power and knowledge, Mummys for those more attached to their physical being and "a note of derision overtakes her tone "for those who's feral nature overtake their minds, Wights. But there are others in these lands who have become something more. The Lord of Barovia, Von Zarovich, the mistress of the Twilight Mansion, Kelnarn, and there are others. So we know it is possible, we just have not found out how, though many have delved the secrets. We believe it is a change in the blood, from this the flesh also changes. Your blood, young one, has already changed somewhat, which is why you will be pained in the light of the sun and hunger for the blood of others as you do. Perhaps you will be the one to unlock the last mystery, or perhaps your body will fail to become anything but dust."
The silence between them hangs in the air. "Remember these words, young one:
Raelyl Forath Yth Ikaal Alaath Yanath Ikaal Ikyll Yth Ikaal Yreth Ilaath Alaath
This is what we believe to be part of the ritual of becoming that we seek. When the time comes it will serve you well."
Unathalese ponders both the incantation and her mentor's earlier words. "So it was you who gave me life?" The question seemed out of the flow of conversation, but Seladrine replies simply "Yes." Unathalese nods to herself. "Thank you.......mother."

|
RoleChapter 4 Journey to the Overworld Added Mon Feb 10 15:52:40 2014 at level 41:There was to be a public trial and, it was widely rumored, a very public execution at its conclusion. Unathalese did not feel any fear of death, she was already intimately familiar with it. Most early childhood memories fade, even the most traumatic ones, although those particular ones may often leave scars, fears or anxieties. For Unathalese, though, her earliest memories are as clear as the day she first opened her eyes and gazed into the face of her mentor. She remember that feeling of being wrenched back from the darkness which enshrouded her soul, the sweet saline taste of blood in her mouth and the fire which burned in her veins. Within her was a warmth, not of life, but of something darker, bringing with it a hunger that she still did not fully understand. The memory of being held in a woman's arms, a woman who sobbed at the sight of her newborn babe, with a joy which was part relief, part maternal bond and part political assurance is still keen in Unathalese's mind, but she felt no bond with this woman who she called mother. Her only connection was to Seladrine, and it was she who would once again ensure Unathalese's existence.
The trial levied acts of abomination against a fellow drow, something frowned upon even in a race known for cruelty and cut throat politics, in the most literal of senses. Killing another drow was a commonplace occurrence, but to perform acts of necromancy was an abhorrent cultural violation. Unathalese was sentence to beheading in the plaza at the Hour of the Goddess the next day. Seladrine knew this would not be something she could permit. So it was she who arranged for the escape, and it was also she who paid the ultimate price. There was indeed a beheading at the Hour of the Goddess, but it was not Unathalese. She instead crawled up through a crevice leading into a ruined tower, slipping through spiderwebs and past the desiccated corpses of humanoid beasts. There was a strange light in the doorway, not the ruddy glow of any torchlight, but a searing white light which hurt the eyes. She remained in the shadows calculating her next actions, then pulling her cowl forward to shade her eyes stepped into the light. The pain was intense. Her forearms and hands blistered as though covered in alchemic acid, causing Unathalese to leap back into the shadows, staring with disbelief at her pustuled white skin.
She remained in the tower tending her wounds. Using some cloth she stripped from a corpse she covered her skin and after some hours she noticed the white light had faded to a more comfortable red glow. Eventually it faded to black and revealed for the first time the constellations of the heavens. At this point she made her way forth in the the Overworld, learning to avoid and distrust the burning orb of the sun.

RoleChapter 3 Experiments in the Dark Added Mon Feb 10 15:50:45 2014 at level 41:The darkness of the Underworld had always been of comfort to Unathalese, her eyes seemed more keen than others of her kind, seeing more in the darkest recessed of the Underdark. Though the city was well lit by torches, sconces well placed around each street and building, she preferred the darker places, far from prying eyes. Here she would practice her rudimentary spells, or exploring the inner workings of flesh through vivisection and dissection. She has so far failed to resurrect any of the creatures she had experimented on, and wonders if it were the fact that the lacked sentience. This she plans to remedy. There is a particular girl from a rival house within Teth Azeleth to home she has a particular 'distaste'. A sickly child who rarely was seen in public without her nursemaids. There were many within the city who thought her too weak to be allowed to live and muttered it was a disgrace to the Spider Goddess that she was not put to death. Unathalese could smell the disease in her blood, she once stood close to her in the plaza. There was a bandage on the child's arm, from a fresh wound. Probably the kind of wound most children would receive in the course of being a child, but for this particular one, the wound stayed open and did not heal. Unathalese could often smell blood when it was freshly spilt, one of the reason she enjoyed her walks through the slavemarkets when the slavemasters whip had been active. It intoxicated her. When the child walked past the smell of her blood made Unathalese gag, it stack of disease. Her distaste blossomed into a full fledge plan to use her in a future experiment and raise her corpse and prove her increasing necromantic skills.
The plan to abduct the child was simple and effective. A lonely thing, bereft of friends, was easily tempted away with the promise of a playmate. Unathalese experiments were divided into those she conducted while the child's screams echoed through the secluded cavern, those she performed on the still warm corpse and then culminated with the final act of raising the corpse to be her thrall. As the small figure shambled to its feet Unathalese felt a surge of triumph, to be followed rapidly with her scream of frustration as the zombie fell to pieces before her eyes. It was ironic that it were her screams which allowed the house guards to pinpoint her location.

RoleChapter 2 Seladrine Added Mon Feb 10 15:49:20 2014 at level 41:Seladrine the midwife, priestess of the Spider Goddess. All knew of her and many of the noble houses of the drow employed her talents to safely deliver their children. None but the members of her coven knew her true nature. Their dark rites of blood and sacrifice had been conducted in secret for an epoch, there were few who could even guess at Seladrine's true age. Her needs were often satiated by feeding on the children she delivered, unbeknownst to their parents. New born children had the purest of blood, so potent that she could last for a decade by one feeding. It was a delicate balance though, for to drain too much would cause the child to die, she had made that mistake early in her life, but know knew intuitively what was just enough. This last birth was an anomaly, instead of feeding on the child, she had allowed it to feed on her and in doing so saved, or perhaps given it life. The auguries had been clear though, her dark God had a purpose for this one and she could not have allowed it to die. When she handed the swaddled infant back to the mother there was tension in the room, broken by a collective exhalation of relief when the child wriggled in its mothers arms. It regarded her with the same cold gaze that had affixed Seladrine, not a sound did it utter. Seladrine reported that the child was a girl, first born of a first born and had all the signs that she was blessed by the Spider Goddess. The room muttered its praises and all was well, but Seladrine knew that something dark lay within it and it would indeed be no ordinary child.
Unathalese was a quiet and imperious child, often obtaining her desires with only a look. Her caregivers and handmaidens developed an unquiet fear in her company. She never cried and seemed to have no fear of pain. It was her unnerving fascination with blood and death which was the most disturbing. There were instances of household pets found dissected and drained of blood, Unathalese appeared to have no interest in dolls or other such child-like fancies. Only the ever present influence of Seladrine kept the whispering gossip and rumors silenced. The one or two instances of talk had ended abruptly with the untimely 'removal' of several house servants, offered the prestigious honor of spilling their blood on the altar. Seladrine watched the growth of the child with keen interest and it was she who undertook her tutelage in the dark necromantic arts when the time was right.

RoleChapter 1 An Unusual Birth Added Mon Feb 10 15:48:00 2014 at level 41:Subject An Unusual Birth In the normal process of a birth, the pained screams of the mother become sobs of joy when the cries of the child are heard, but this was no normal birth, this was no normal mother and certainly no normal child. Within the House of Kel'Nardina motherhood was an obligation. An obligation to produce a strong female heir who would continue the bloodline, retain control over and enhance the wealth and prestige of their noble house. Ulsathalese was first born and now it was her turn to produce a first born heir. The pregnancy had been uneventful and the auguries performed by the priestesses had shown that the child was to be female, so the anticipation was high. The birth, however, was traumatic. The child had turned in the womb and the cord had become entangled around its neck. The midwives in their dark, spider embroidered robes, worked furiously to rectify the issues, but even so the child was delivered ashen and blue. Seladrine, the chief midwife, whisked the child to the small altar as soon as the cord was cut. All in the chamber stood silent, the air felt stifling, the candles guttered as though starved and all held their breath, awaiting the newborn's first cry.
Seladrine knew when she first cut the cord that the child was still-born. She quickly wrapped it in linen and hurried to the altar, there was little time if she was to succeed. She must not allow the house to fail, and if the child died then it would be thrown into political turmoil. Ulsathalese would be the next casualty, failure to produce a living heir would not be tolerated and there would be others in her court who would suffer a similar fate. There was no breath in the child's body, the cord had twisted and sustenance had been deprived in the last stages of the birth. What she was about to do was dangerous at best, both for the child and for her, for if her true nature were discovered then her life, such as it was, would be forfeit, even the drow did not tolerate her kind. With a glance behind her she ensured none could see her actions. Drawing breath, Seladrine opens her mouth, her canine teeth begin to gentle elongate, becoming slender fangs. With a swift motion she draws her wrist across her mouth, allowing them to slice into her flesh. Dark crimson blood immediately beginning to well forth, and she allows it to cascade into the mouth of the stillborn child. Her dark prayers are fervent, prayers not to the Spider Goddess, but to one more dark and sinister, and in those prayers she offers the soul of the child cradled in her arms. The tiny body jolts. Its eyes open, dark and flat. Seladrine feels the lips pucker and she gasps as the child begins to suckle on the laceration on her wrist, drawing her lifeblood with eager hunger. She pulls her arm back and quickly wraps a strip of linen across the wound. The eyes of the child focus on her, eyes with something dark and purposeful in their gaze.
