Galfrin Diongtae the Malefic
DescriptionThis olive-skinned man, short in stature, stands about five and a half feet tall. His black hair is done up in a oicho style chonmage topknot. His face is round and flat, with almond-shaped eyes and dark brown irises. He has several small scars on his face, and many more over the rest of his visible skin. He wears a long, thin moustache with straight points. He is well muscled, but with long, delicate fingers, calloused at the tips, suggestive of hard, but precise work. The tip of his right pinky finger seems to be missing, however. He wears a simple, decorative silver chain about his neck, and a gourd is tied about his waist.

RoleChapter 5 For No Higher Purpose, a missive intended for all Added Wed Nov 20 17:07:44 2013 at level 28:I pen this missive for publication with the intent to issue a challenge to all ye who name me, Galfrin Diongtae, their enemy, but the sentiment is meant as well to all who would read it.
This is a war-torn world we inhabit, where the pawns of the gods do spill our blood in the name of keeping the heavens clean of it. We fight, kill, and die for what we consider high and noble causes. Some fight in the name of our gods, some of us fight to cleanse the world of the taint of evil, magic, civilization, or those who have wronged us, some to right the balance, some for conquest of the world, while some seek only to further dark ambitions. To some of us, killing is just a chore, a task that delivers us closer to an ideal world. So often we forget who we are as individuals, pitted face to face against each other, but both seeing only what is in the distance.
So I challenge you this, fellow walkers of the battlefield: To cast aside noble callings, and put down the trappings of righteousness, and seek out battle with your enemy not in pursuit of a higher purpose, but for the sake of testing your mettle against a foe in single combat, each seeking victory over the other. See your opponent as the individual that he is, with thoughts, goals, and a life he deems worth living. With this knowledge, seek to prove yourself the greater, the victor.
Those who name me as enemy, I seek a battle, and know that I shall fight as Galfrin the man, and shall ever strive to see you, my enemy, as the individual you are. And with that, I trust that when you swing your sword at me, you will do so not to cobble your long road with another corpse, but for the thrill of battle, and for the chance at victory over another.

RoleChapter 4 What Needs Be Done Added Fri Nov 8 23:26:42 2013 at level 28:Few hold much concern for the weapon they wield, save its sharpness, or magical properties.
It is a sword. It cuts. If another cuts deeper, then it is cast away in favor of the new one.
Weapons are lost, stolen, claimed, or discarded as the tools that they are.
But the jagged sword of Galfrin Diongtae holds a special place in his heart.
The victory in which he claimed it for his own was the first time his god deigned speak to him.
Since then, he has made it his own, though it will never be more than a metal bar in his feeble, broken hand.
It has tasted the blood of every foe he has bested, been a part of every victory since that fateful day, so many years ago.
And that is the very reason that he must cast it away.
The sword has been a part of his victories, but also party to his weakness. When he lost focus upon what matters, his god and the Chalice, his dream of recognition, to hunt the blood of the weak, the sword was there to taste of it.
And so he shall offer it in sacrifice to Akresius, along with every victory he has claimed, that he may start fresh, the beauty of his path unblemished by his past failures.

RoleChapter 3 The Ruin of a Warrior Added Mon Oct 7 00:55:41 2013 at level 24:He looked up again from the musty tome he was studying to his sword resting against a bookshelf in the Library of Necromancy within the Chasm. It was a cruel, savage-looking weapon, and though it lacked the grace and elegance of the masterwork katanas his people cherished, it had served him well in many battles. The spoils of his victory over an assassin, the blade was his by right, and thus was a part of him.
And yet, as he took up the sword in his clumsy grip, the phantom pain of his severed pinky ever present, it did not feel like an extension of himself. It would never truly be his, he knew; it may as well have been a metal bar, or a length of wood, for all his ability to use it.
It was in these frequent times, when he lamented the choices that brought him here, the life that he lost, that he felt acutely the crimson gaze of his golem upon his back.
He turned to it, the golem standing with the stillness no living being could hope to mimic, like that of a stone, fixed hard to its place. And yet it seemed to mock him. "You are no swordsman," it seemed to say, "that was the life of another, a man who lost his way. This is who you are now. What you are."
He raised his sword angrily, shouting his denial, but the phantom pain seared him, and the sword clattered to the ground, the echo ringing loudly in the silent chambers. The golem stared on, impassively.
He glanced at the fallen blade, and back to the golem. He knew what it wanted to say. That it, his magic, was his sword now. A sword he wielded truer and swifter than any steel. That he was a far greater necromancer than he ever was a swordsman. So he should not lament his loss, but resign himself to his fate, and know in his heart that while he lost something he considers beautiful, what he found in the shadows, amongst the ruins of a warrior, was something that may become even more beautiful.
But the golem did not speak, and so he said the words to himself instead. He knelt to retrieve the fallen sword, its jagged edge reflecting the candlelight, and returned to the desk with his tomes. Taking the sword in his left, he placed his maimed hand upon a thick necromantic text, bound in ancient, stone-hard leather, and unceremoniously stabbed the point of the sword into the book where his pinky would have been.
The pain vanished.
And so the necromancer Galfrin, the ruin of a warrior, rose from his seat, his robes flowing around him as the shadows flickered in the candlelight. He took the blade in his grip, and walked forth into the harsh desert light, to offer prayers to Akresius with the blood of his enemies.
The golem's crimson gaze never faltered.

RoleChapter 2 Scion Research Added Mon Sep 16 23:45:52 2013 at level 19:Title: Sustenance
After study of the texts gathered in our libraries, I am brought to what I would consider the, or at least a, root of my research into the manipulation of shadow substance as the flesh of creatures.
Based upon what is written in the texts, it has been concluded that those creatures based in shadow sustain themselves through strong emotion, and use their unique empathy to draw upon this source. Living, corporeal creatures sustain themselves through food of various kinds, obviously, where fey use magic, and the dead use life force in conjunction with magic.
The difficulty here is the interactions between these forms of sustenance. Meat is what it is, and lacks an intrinsic link to any other. Food can be invested with magic, of course, but I have seen no examples, or even can conceive of the idea of investing normal food with life force (fresh meat notwithstanding) or emotion. As such, living and dead matter contradict (obviously), and living matter would therefore also have trouble sustaining shadow matter. The shadow would reject the normal sustenance, and the living would have no means of providing for the shadow.
I would presume, however, that undead matter and shadow matter lack a mutual contradiction. Some forms of undead, generally weaker, less tangible ones, feed off of emotions such as fear. While the conclusion to jump to seems clear, the issues that arise are many.
1. Undead have a certain...deepness to them that is difficult to describe to those who have no link to the necromantic. I am uncertain if this would prevent the shadow from gaining sustenance, by draining it all away. In writing this, however, I realize that the same may be said for the shadow, though I am uncertain in this regard.
2. Sentient undead maintain some link to their original form, loose though it may be. Perhaps if one believes strongly that the shadow is part of oneself during the Becoming?
3. Undead beings still maintain differentiated body parts. One tends not to see headless zombies. Shadow creatures do not seem to hold to this, with some that flow easily from one form to another. Would this cause sentience within a part of the whole?
There is still much to be done.

|
RoleChapter 1 Role Specifics Added Mon Sep 9 19:52:11 2013 at level 15:Origins: Northeastern tribe (essentially Asian) of swordsmen. They focus their entire lives on training in their craft to protect their way of life. Galfrin, strong, but never quite the very best of swordsmen, began to explore magic as a way to augment his abilities. He was discovered, and, dishonored, forced to perform yubitsume, cutting off his pinky finger, which would forever place him as the weakest of swordsmen, unable to properly grip his sword to perform the difficult maneuvers. Understanding this, and furthering his disgrace, he fled to the more civilized lands to make a name for himself, that he might return one day to prove himself their better.
Class: In finding himself unable to wield a sword as a warrior, he chose instead to take up a new craft. He would forge for himself a new sword; one of bone, blood, and flesh.
Alignment: Galfrin is goal oriented, rather than overtly iniquitous. That is, torturing a child is not a task he would seek out or enjoy intrinsically, but he would do it without blinking as a means to an end, and with pleasure.
Deity and Sphere: Will seek to follow Akresius as an adherent to the ways and goals of the warrior he feels he is. He sees Beauty in striving for the perfection of his craft, seeking ever stronger foes to test his mettle, and to provide greater materials.
Cabal: Galfrin believes that studying the substantive shadow, the flesh of the nightwalkers, he might learn to manipulate it as a weapon, the same as he does the corporeal flesh. He believes it an unexplored field, and ripe with possibility.
Reason to Live: He seeks to prove to both himself, and eventually to those who disgraced him, that his path is just as noble as any other. He strives for absolute perfection in his art, ever seeking greater heights of power and competition.
