Chapter 15

The cries of battle filled the imperial halls, the fortress had launched a
daring raid straight into the heart of Imperial lands. Aided by elements of
the refuge the imperial armies had been drawn from the palace leaving it and
the aging emperor vulnerable. Etion moved quickly to the throne room, sure
that the fortress would try and capture the sacred codex. With a nod and
filled with his ladies love he bolstered the imperial guardsman as he moved
amongst them, drawing upon the tenants of the codex to grant them protection
from even the most savage blows. He entered the throne room to see the
imperial council battling against the champions of the light. Etion paused to
watch them, his mind torn, to see his rightful brothers and sisters bringing
violence to those he was bound to protect. He steeled his resolve swallowing
the bitter pill of the lesser of two evils and charged into the fray, the
song of his rising prayers offering strength and determination to his
soldiers. The battle was long and bloody, with many casualties, Etions breath
laboured in his chest as he struggled to protect himself from the ring of
steel that surrounded him. His back to the dais the last of the council lay
dying or dead, the sacred codex stolen. As the lady raised her blade to bring
him swift mercy, Etion grabbed a hold of her wrist and opened a gateway,
transporting them both from the throne room in an instant. The rest of
soldiers of light stared around at the devastation before letting loose cries
of victory.

The lady voralia blinked the light from her eyes, staring around herself,
finding herself before the city of Voralia.

'Ahh an old reflex, I do apologise for taking you here under duress' she
whirled her blade at the ready, Etion stepped forward casting back his cowl,
his eyes wavering.

'That wont be necessary, the bond I require you to break takes more than a
mere blade' Voralias eyes narrowed but sensing no malice sheathed her blade.

They talked for a time, before the gates of the city, Etion explaining all
that had happened to him and pleading with her to help him break the oath
that so entrapped his soul. As the time passed and she heard of his deeds
good and bad,

she wondered if redemption was truly what he desired, but that if it was, she
must help him.

Chapter 14

Etion shifted nervously, as he approached the dais, he could feel the eyes of
the Imperial shadows on him, watching every step he took towards the aging
emperor. sensing their life force even though their presence remained hidden
from his eyes. The first cohort of blades forming a ring of steel before him,
parting like the river around a rock with all the deadly grace of their
training. His eyes taking in the grandeur of the ancient giant, he felt a
stab of jealousy that his love was shared with this creature, his freedom
resting in Kraldinors will. As he passed the warmaster, his plate shinning
and regal, he detected a slight smirk followed by a wink. He gave the emperor
his personal report discussing details of casualties and wounds, and of
course the inquisition of the anathema, prisoners and slaves. As his oration
came to an end he leaned a little closer to whisper in the giants ear, as he
did so the ring of steel and shuffle of boots filled the throne room. Their
cries echoing around the highly vaulted ceiling, Etion glanced around to see
the Imperial blades held in position swords drawn eyes narrowing.

'What ever you have to say High Priest, you should say it quickly' The
emperor grumbled in a deep tone filled with amusement, he waved a hand and
the first cohort relaxed slightly as one. Etion leaned forward once more and
whispered in the Emperors ear.

The giants eyes widened, first in disbelief and then in shock and finally in
a cold anger, the air hissed from his lips and his hand tightened on the
handle of his great sword.

'No, Elf, your request will never be granted by me, or ANY true servant of
the Empire, be gone from me with these foolish whims less I grant your
release in death.'

Etion realising the magnitude of his error, took a step back as the whispers
in the shadows grew, murmurs even amongst the elite blades of what might have
been suggested to bring such ire from the aging emperor.

Etion quickly kneeled kissing the giants imperial insignia before standing
tall once more and walking stiffly from the Imperial throne room.

Chapter 13

I snapped awake, the room bathed in darkness, my eyes quickly adjusting to
the night. I was breathing heavily, my heart racing, the dream, once again
the dream. My fingers found my face, a healers hands probing in the darkness,
seeking out any damage, finding only the warm wetness of tears. I slowed my
breathing, in the privacy of my chambers I have wept for betrayal, I have
wept for treachery, I have wept for those I've slain, intentionally and
otherwise, and I have wept for my lady love. Though the pain of the sunlight
on my skin stung even now, it was a good pain, it reminded me of all that is
good and great in the world and all that can be. I wept for joy, with my
goddesses hand I will walk across the desolate wastes of darkness, and my
heart will soar to the light. Though they send vultures, demons or imperial
armies to break me, I shall stand tall, I shall break the bond of blood, cast
aside the Imperial oath and order, reach out forgiveness to those that know
no better, and inspire and protect the innocent.

Chapter 12

So it came to pass with Kraldinors ascension to the throne and his misguided
belief in Etions passion for the Lady, that he placed Etion as High Priest of
the Imperial divine. For Etion it was an unimaginable boon, to be able to act
as he wished, grant the release of death without question and to live with
far less suspicion or demands on his presence. Of course there were those of
the political who would seek to take this seat from him, and those of other
sects who demanded service without payment.. His power allowed him to direct
his own course for a while. He continued in his studies of poisons, using his
political muscle to make friendships amongst the thieves guilds, who though
loath to reveal any of their secrets at least were willing to share some of
the basics, in return for handsome rewards. Etion studied the Emperor, acting
as his personal physician, he knew he could likely poison the aging giant, or
better yet bide his time and seize the throne. As Emperor he would have carte
blanche to do as he chose, to direct the imperial order, armies and forces as
he dictated. He knew of course the Imperial gods would not sit idly by as he
steered a course for the light and righteousness, realised that, that path
was for him, and him alone, but what if...

Chapter 11

were required to be, he gave a long sigh and realised that his dreams seemed
very far away. He battled long and hard on the field of battle a dervish of
healing and brutal bone breaking, his physicians eye allowing him to spot old
wounds and weak spots in the guards of his enemies. The High Priest Smiled
coldly enjoying the particularly vicious assaults that left men crippled and
weeping in Etion's wake. Etions face locked in a feral grimace hid the guilt
and sorrow he felt as he incapacitated his foes, watching them being pulled
off to slavery and the bloodoath, just as he once had been. Etion realised
that he could end of all of this, change the path of the Imperial armies for
ever, or simply have them stand down, if he could but take and hold the
throne. But in the end, what side of the line will he be standing on?

Chapter 10

The sunlight filtered through the mists, breaking the dawn, the almost still
harbour waves lapped gently against the skiff, and Etion lifted his twisted
visage to the rays, feeling the warmth in its weak light. The boatman stared
across at the imperial acolyte, shaking his head that such a dark priest
would be found here, a bad omen he was sure, but he was well paid
nevertheless and kept steady pace at the oars. As the boat slid onto the
gravel the boatman motioned for Etion to step out, then hurriedly pushed the
boat off and back into the water without even a splash. A gentle thrust with
his oar, and he was gliding out into the bay, disappearing swiftly into the
fog.

As soon as his feet touched the earth, Etion could feel a resonance through
the soil, the smell of lotus blossom drifting in the air. He felt the weight
on his shoulders lessen considerably, and the guilt at all the anathema and
others he had slain seemed to slip away from him as he entered the bosom of
his goddesses home. He took off his boots and enjoyed his pilgrimage to the
Bathhouse barefoot, luxuriating in the cool feel of the rock against his
skin. He pulled the hood of his habit right back, running his fingers through
his hair, as he approached the Bathhouse, he spotted a fela lounging nearby,
as he moved to walk past her, he became sure she was one of the ladies
handmaidens and gave her a pleasant smile of greeting. He dallied a short
while but he did not want to displease his mistress and as pretty as the fela
was she could not hope to compete with the brilliance of his love. He
stepped into warm wet air of the shrine, his chest swelling with joy as he
recognised her scent on the air. He walked towards her, his heart pounding
with intense trepidation, nothing to fear, but the shear presence of his
goddess turned his insides to a maelstrom of exited jitters. She embraced him
warmly and he thought his heart might burst from the joy he felt. They stood
for a time and she whispered sweet words in his ear, filling his being with
hope and redemption, slipping off his imperial woes, discarding his darkest
secrets and searching to heal his heart of betrayal and torture.
He shivered as she whispered to him of the possibility, of the path that
would lead him to trust again as he once did, and he knew that if that was
possible, the true depth of his love could be released. In his mind he warred
with his passion and his fear, the uncharted path before him would come with
pain and despair of its own, but the shinning beacon of love would lead his
way.

Etion stretched, and stepped out of the long bath, smiling and winking as the
serving girls re-adorned him in his robes and imperial regalia. He walked
from the bathhouse just as the sun was rising, and smiled once more to the
fela handmaiden on the way out. He returned to the city, and was immediately
presented with casualty lists and directives of where the imperial acolytes

Chapter 9

He listened carefully as the patient before him breathed his last, his hands
trembled a little at the sweet release he felt with each life he ended in the
name of mercy. A faint smile easing across his face as reviled in giving the
last rites, another soul saved from torture at the hands of the inquisition,
he ran his hands over the face of the dead felar closing his eyes for ever.
Feeling a sudden chill he pulled his robes about him as he crept from the
dimly lit tent back into the shadows of the imperial camp. He could hear the
laughter and murmur from the various fire pits and the shrill surprised bark
of a camp dog caught with some tasty morsel by the rest of the pack. Startled
he looked about, his eyes darting fearfully to rest upon a long dark shadow
leaning against a nearby wagon. Etion froze momentarily his heart pounding in
his chest he recognised the inquisitor Kraldinor before him. The giant raised
his arm and beckoned Etion to him, cursing under his breath the healer tread
towards the shaman.
'I know what you do Etion, I've been watching you' a sense of dread filled
Etion as he quietly palmed a particularly poisonous dart contemplating the
need to slay one of his mistresses followers. Calmly he pulled his hood back
staring into the cowl of the shaman before him.
'And what is that Inquisitor?' a grating chuckle issued from beneath the
hood, enormous skull crushing hand reaching up to pull down his own hood in
kind. Baleful eyes boring into his own in the half dark of the flickering
camp light, the blood singing in Etions veins as he edged closer.
'I know you love to cause pain and suffering as I do, that is why you sneak
into the prisoners tents, to torment and torture them for your own pleasure,
does it not fill you with Glee? It is ok divine brother I too enjoy such
pleasures in the name of the One Law'.
The air hissed so slowly from his lungs his shoulders relaxed a fraction and
an easy smile fell upon his face, thank the merciful lady, he offered a
silent prayer.

Chapter 8

Etion sat quietly his feet dipped in the waters of the bath before him, his
head back breathing in the scents of his second home, he shuddered, his
normal peace would not come to him. He missed her voice and her soft giggle
cursing his elven heritage first the enigmatic and charismatic little thief
and now the half blood. His heart filled with grief as his foot lazily traced
a circle in the waters. He remembered the first time he had dragged his
broken body back to the bath house seeking his ladies pleasure, and smile.
The openness Rachiel showed him and the easy acceptance as family, their long
talks into the wee small hours of the morning and watching the dawn break. A
single tear of regret for words and deeds left unsaid quickly dismissed by
the firm knowledge that she was for ever with the mistress, for ever wrapped
in love. He vowed to be less maudlin and to embrace his companions and ....
friends more wholly in future, regardless of the flaws they might have.He
loved that of all the places here he could be himself here he could have a
sense of family that he could never reveal within the Empire, lest it be
called as weakness and his frail standings crushed by Imperial oppression.

Chapter 7

'.......I added another host of rare flowers to my list of plants to study more
closely, I believe some of them could be used to stimulate various aspects of
more simple venoms. I bought them from a merchant who said they came from
Veran, I will continue to investigate this mythical valley for myself in
time.........' the book goes on to describe a collection of plants, toxins and
venoms collected and analysed for various properties, it contains detailed
sketches with clear instruction on how to remove and collect the various
secretions.
'...... success I have managed to combine the firebloom and the venom of a cave
fisher with amazing results, the poison seems to act almost instantaneously and
causes no pain to the subject. I have offered many the elixir of mercy, for
sometimes the wounds they bear are too much. My love of life and healing is
troubled but I believe they must be allowed to choose.......' The notes
continue with anatomical sketches of various Thera races, you find yourself
looking at a diagram of a Fire Giant, and a small note on dosage is scribbled
in fine ink with several exclamation marks. You also note comments on the
diagrams of Arials, Dark Elves and Duergar.
'...... So I finally met with the Lady of the Bathhouse, and though the beauty
of Rachel was something to behold, nothing, not even my dreams could prepare me
for the beauty of the Goddess herself, I lost myself before her presence, my
knees weakening, just being near her filled me with the promise of so much in
the name of Love......' the passage continues with descriptions of the goddess,
and the bath house and how he felt as each moment passed. '...so it is with
trepidation that I heal the wounds that I am bade to heal, and those that I am
not, I let the young live, though war will come for the middle age, and in the
act of healing, I offer death to the sufferers, I only hope my lady sees me
fit.....'

Chapter 6

The interior of the tent as a wash with light from four huge sconces, brass
entities embossed with the Imperial sigils. A single black iron chair dominated
the centre and in it a horrifically scarred fire giant. He was heavily manacled
and one of the imperial guard was beating him mercilessly, as the black emperor
Kurbrawn watched on. 'I commanded you to Destroy the Scion Enclave! and you
failed me Anathema! and now you shall suffer in agony until your breath is
done' he turned and left the tent, sweeping his great cloak behind him. In the
light of the fires, the torture began a new, along with the screams.
As the fires dimmed to little more than embers, casting only a sickly orange
light over the sparsely adorned confines, the shadows growing long and dark. A
hooded figure slipped through a precise cut in the back of the tent. Moving
quickly to the bound giant, his soothing hands touching upon the feverish
anathemas forehead. He mumbled a swift prayer to his Lady, His love, then held
still, as the figure beside him opened his enormous eyes, struggling to speak
through cracked lips, broken teeth and oozing blood he stared with a fiery
defiance into the healers eyes.
'Mercy' he spat with a spray of blood, as the light in the chamber flared,
Etion looked closely at the broken body before him, realising that almost every
bone had been broken at least once, and in the most painful of manner.
Remarkable he though that the sub commander was still defiant, he was
contemplating that very thing as he slipped a dart tipped with a particularly
swift venom into the giants thick skin. Moments past and the giant let loose a
long sigh, while his body convulsed and finally lay still, crumpled. The young
healer collected his items and made sure there was no sign of his intrusion,
given the damage to the body he expected one little puncture wound would pass
unnoticed. Etion pulled his hood close to his head, and slipped from the tent.

Chapter 4

Etion Baen'urden looked at himself in the mirror as he shaved off the scruff of
hair on his chin that the few days in the field had left him with. Many months
had past and his face and hands had healed well, remarkably quickly and he was
sure the goddess had a hand in that. His face was still comely but he was some
what unrecognizable to the young physician in the hospital tent, it felt like a
life time in truth. Those serving with him would describe him as cruel and
ruthless, his 'mercies' often brutal and messy, but always quick. In truth he'd
buried the love of his work deep inside, his love of his patients and the
desire to heal, The imperials were not interested in those facets, only his
skilled hands and ability to heal their soldiers, so much like the Fortress he
thought. No doubt they would abandon him and his patients as quickly. He was
careful to be quick in delivering the sweet mercy of death to those he wasn't
sure he could save, he'd have no more patients torched alive. He served his
goddess with love and adoration, trying to hide the burning within, he knew she
had saved him, twisted the Sub Commanders mind to offer the oath, stayed the
blades of the kill squad, but what had she delivered him to?

Chapter 3

The icy cold water sprayed over his head, and he choked a little as it ran down
his naked back and chest. The cascade of water was swiftly followed by a hard
slap across his face.
'Tell us about the troop deployments! where have the fortress retreated to?! We
know you spoke with the commander before they moved' another fierce blow to the
other cheek, he felt the skin breaking under the powerful blow. Etion tried to
open his battered eyes to stare at his inquisitor, his addled brain trying to
remember if the commander had said anything that might save him from this
brutal torture, the hand came again, this time as a fist, smashing into his
mouth, bursting his lips, Etion tried a garbled scream trying to move his hands
to cover his head, realising they were still shackled and realising again, that
his fingers were broken, the pain swimming through his head. Over powering his
already shredded nerves, he could vaguely make out the Ebon giant standing in
the corner watching him dispassionately. He coughed, spitting blood trying to
over come his racing heart, his jaw shaking as he mumbled the words
'Pleeeease, sssstop I've tttttold you everything I kkkknow' the blows ceased at
a wave from the sub commander, who loomed closer, impossibly large.
'Yuh?! Wish pain stop?! Yuh wants make world better yuh?!' the giant peered
close, pulling Etions head back 'Yuh?!' Etion struggled against the pain, his
body screaming in agony.
'Yyyyyess I want it to sssstop, ppppplease make it stttop' a huge dark grin
split across the ebon face, his fetid breath cascading over Etion the smell
seeping through his broken nose, the physician stared up at the glee on the sub
commanders face.
'All had do was says, says these words Etion healer man, says My heart, My
Life, My Soul for the Empire'. Etion groaned in despair, but felt his mouth
moving and the words slipping from his lips, he felt a fiery pain lance through
his body, and then the bliss of unconscious as darkness was upon him.

Chapter 2

The menace on the face of the squad approaching Etion was clear and he felt
fear deep in his stomach, he looked up awaiting the killing stroke from one of
their short swords, he closed his eyes and prayed to his goddess. That his
works not be forgotten, that he might have done enough in his life to be
considered worthy to stand by her side. As the blade was about to fall, a deep
gravely timbre boomed across the field
'Stop... this one might be of some use yet' as the startled surgeon opened his
eyes to look upon his saviour he saw a massive ebon skinned giant stalking
towards the squad. The imperial soldiers stood by swords still raised,
acknowledging the sub commanders orders.
'Take him' the giant turned away as the squad moved in quickly shackling his
hands and feet and pulling him towards a waiting cart. Etion screamed then.
'Wait! what of my patients?! My works?!!?' the hulking giant turned to regard
Etion curiously, his thick brows furrowing as if confused by the notion of
mercy.
'Burn it all' he said with little regard, before turning to speak with a few of
his officers. Etion groaned as if wounded as the torches were hurled at the
tent and the canvas was quickly engulfed in flames. Followed by the screams of
the dying as the fires incinerated them.

Chapter 1

The heat in the infirmary was palpable and the young physician wiped the
clotted sweat from his brow, his hands and arms covered in viscera. He could
feel the pressure building behind his eyes, so many dead, so much hurt. He
stared around the tiny field hospital at the various patients and corpses, what
ever the enemy had unleashed this time was devastating the bodies both within
and with out. Large pustule like buboes erupting from the surface of the skin.
It was clear that it was highly infectious and he wondered at the heat and his
sweating, and prayed that the goddess would protect him until the last of the
wounded were treated. Etion loved to heal and he knew it was his calling, but
days like this made him question his practices, patching up these soldiers so
they could battle on in the name of the light, delivering swift mercy when he
could do no more. He knew the fight was righteous but he couldn't help but hope
for an end to the unceasing war, a relent, a day where all he need worry about
were the small sniffles of the elderly, or the delivery of a babe safely to the
world. As he considered the carnage of his work space he sighed realising that
day was far from near, pulling up his light surgeons mask me returned to the
table before him.


The clamour of close battle jolted Etion awake, the field hospital barely lit
by the candle lanterns, the light flickering and casting long shadows across
the walls, the groans of the sick and dying an audible undercurrent. The clash
of steel on steel almost outside the tent, as his exhausted mind finally began
to work, he felt a deep dread within him. His tent was a good days ride back
from the front, there was no way it could be anything but a skirmish. He
hurriedly scanned around looking for his standard issue breastplate, or his
helm he was sure they had given him one. Panic was beginning to set in and his
normally rock steady hands began to shake. Shit, who, what, why, his mind
screamed at him to do something, to take some positive action. Finally he
marshalled his fears and walked the short distance to the tent flap, peering
out side. The last clashes of steel were coming to an end with only faint and
short bursts of noise. His mouth fell open as he looked around himself, he felt
like a thousand eyes were staring straight at him. They were, he noted also
that most of the camp had been broken up and the once huge encampment was just
a scattering of tents. Mostly the personal tents of some of the physicians, he
vaguely recalled a few exhausted nights before hand speaking with the commander
of the forces who had talked of manoeuvres and repositioning and fear of
disease spreading. Etion fell to his knees as the Imperial forces moved closer,
he had been abandoned along with the sick.
