Ruosti the Skjaldic Mason of the Paragon, Drillmaster of Battle
The graceful figure of Ruosti moves along, a song on his lips and fire in his eyes.
DescriptionBrown hair stylishly falls in a wavy fashion around the handsome face to just below the chin of this wood-elf man. His cheek bones are high and ivory skin is sun colored telling of much time spent outdoors. His frame tall and muscular and well proportioned so that he doesn't seem overly skinny despite having very little body fat. His eyes are warm and alive with an energetic light. He carries himself with an authoritative poise, as if he were someone used to the burden of command.

RoleChapter 2 How It Began Added Tue May 21 14:18:49 2013 at level 16:It began several months ago as Ruosti started his bard training within the guild. As part of that curriculum he, like all bards, was required to study the history of Thera, along with the history of his race, since he was training out of the wood-elf city, Evermoon Hollow.
Ruosti had been sent to read certain histories located in the citys library. Once there he became slightly distracted from the required reading and became fascinated with all the ancient volumes that were stored in the library. These ancient texts varied on all subjects. Some were boring records of mundane city operations and finances, while others were fascinating accounts of exciting occurrences. Whatever his choice of reading was, it wasnt seen as a bad thing as bards were supposed to be well versed in history and any extra reading was encouraged.
It was at this time that Ruosti came across an extremely old manuscript dating from the sometime around the third age. Actually, to be correct, the manuscript itself was that old but it was a copy of a much older manuscript that had since decayed from the first age. Most of the manuscript itself was an account of a number of wood-elves that lived in that first age. While a fascinating read to a history buff since it was about some of the very first wood-elves Ruosti found that it contained very little useful information, and he even wondered about the time invested in copying the book to preserve it aside from preserving it for the sake of preservation. That was until he noticed a small detail in the book.
The detail wasnt much and many likely poured past it without a second thought. It was part of a travel account where a man was simply detailing the route he had taken with a small map attached. The names of all the places on the map were all different from the present, but, the geography was recognizable as eastern ArAtouldain and the pass of Gol Golath. The thing that caught his eye was the mention of a smaller pass leading into a vale north out of the pass of Gol Golath. There was no pass in this area that Ruosti could think of. Had there been a pass there at one time? If it had, did it and the vale it protected still exist? The prospect excited Ruosti.

RoleChapter 3 An Adventure Added Tue May 21 14:21:14 2013 at level 16:Being young with big ideas about adventure, Ruosti decided to go investigate by himself since the area really wasnt but half a days travel from Evermoon. The next morning Ruosti packed himself some supplies and set out. When he reached the approximate location described in the ancient text Ruosti found his excitement tempered by disappointment as there was nothing along the pass except high cliff walls and rock faces. He sat down, discouraged from his trip to eat and while he was doing this he found himself examining the pass walls a little more closely when he noticed that one particular area seemed to have more dirt and boulders compared to the rest of the pass, which was more solid rock. To add to this oddity, he noticed that it was an area just below a rather steep and jagged cliff face. When looked at correctly it almost looked as if a portion of the mountain had cracked off and slid down to the edge of the pass. It nearly looked as though something could have been there before! Deciding to investigate, Ruosti began to climb. The climb was treacherous and thankfully he wasnt afraid of heights as he nearly fell several times. After hours of climbing he finally reached a very high ridge near dusk. When he peered down over the ridge, to his amazement, he saw a very small bundle of trees off in the distance. The grouping of trees was small, and easily dismissible as just a grove of trees, but, Ruosti felt certain that this could be the vale, albeit a small vale, from the text.
Ruosti traveled down the ridge as far as he could before camping the night and the next morning traveled to the Vale. When he arrived in the tiny vale, all he found was well over grown underbrush and a thick tangle of trees. After several hours of searching he finally found something of interest. It was a small hill in the middle of the trees that seemed out of place. At the top of the hill, rocks protruded in places that seemed to be shaped. Ruosti investigated and found that there was a structure underneath a layer of dirt and vegetation. Underneath all the debris he could see a stone archway marked with wood- elvish carvings. If there had been a door, it had crumbled under the passage of time and been replaced with the debris he had just removed. Peering down into the hole, Ruosti could see a staircase leading downward. Lighting a torch he decided to crawl down.

|
RoleChapter 4 The Change Added Tue May 21 14:23:53 2013 at level 16:At the bottom of the stairs Ruosti found a wooden door still standing. When he pulled on the door, the hinges holding it in place crumbled and the door fell open then apart as it hit the stone. At the moment the door opened a rush of air and dust whooshed through the opening along with a subtle, eerie sensation that Ruosti swore was something more than trapped, millenniums old air escaping.
Inside Ruosti found a large stone sarcophagus and in front of it a massive stone marker, with writing chiseled into it. It was this marker that would turn all he knew upside down.
The marker was writing in an ancient wood elf script that through his training, Ruosti was able to read. The marker began by telling that this was the resting place of an ancient elf who served the Violet Spider. It described how the Violet Spider had given magic unto mankind in the beginning, but, not as a gift, rather as a means for the inhabitants of Thera to destroy themselves with. It spoke of how the Forsaken One and the Violet Spider became bored and disgusted with their creation and decided to give to it the weapon to destroy itself with and then disappeared into the cosmos, which is the reason they are with the realms no more.
The marker went on to discuss how this truth was the reason the original wood-elves split from the high elves. They saw how the high elves had become engrossed with magic and ignored its true purpose of destruction and succumbed to its power. The elf that lay in this tomb was a reminder of this. The wood elves separated from the high elves for their use of magic and became focused on nature as a way of preserving this world against the destruction of magic.

RoleChapter 6 The Decision Added Tue May 21 14:26:41 2013 at level 16:Ruosti remembered that moment vividly as he watched the fires rage over the tiny vale. After that moment he had rushed back to Evermoon and told the Kings advisors all that had happened. Ruosti was ordered to lead a group of wood elves back to the vale. When they arrived, the decay had spread so immensely that the whole vale looked like a dead, haunted wood. Seeing this, the elves agreed quickly that Ruosti had unleashed some dark magic meant to stay in the tomb, likely the tomb of some failed lich they said, that was destroying the lands and it must be rooted out. The vale would be burned and the pass would be blocked ever more tightly. Despite all of this, none believe Ruostis account of the marker and all that it said. They were so set in their ways and more knowledgeable than he that they refused to acknowledge what he had to say. They dismissed the marker, or him, as an unreliable source, which infuriated Ruosti to his core, especially because no one dared venture down into the vale to verify his story.
As the fire burned off into the night, Ruosti made up his mind. He was going to go and fight magic, to protect the land and his life, what little of it there was. He didnt know if hed ever be able to overcome the sorrow that filled him over the idea of when its over, its over, but, at least he wasnt going to let it stop him from doing something.

RoleChapter 9 The Grudge Added Fri Jun 28 10:26:45 2013 at level 51:In Ruostis latest meeting with Ysaloerye, she taught him of The Grudge. It is part of her religion that is a very personal vendetta of sorts, not taken up lightly, nor not let go easily. Ruosti knew upon this discussion that he had already taken up a grudge with Ujesken, the Nexus Rhyme. Ujesken had constantly managed to frustrate Ruosti in battle with the big giants bashing. Every time Ruosti managed the upper hand Ujesken would survive somehow. The straw that broke the camels was when Ujesken broke a Malachite Rod Ruosti had been holding as part of a task Ysaloerye had set to him. Ruosti swore to the giant he would not have it repaired until he could take the coins off of his corpse to do so.
Ruosti told the Paragon of this, and after doing so, did find the Rhyme in combat and slew him. Almost as if it were meant to be, the Rhyme carried just the perfect amount of coin to repair the rod. Ruosti felt the grudge settled, yet it was not to be.
Ruosti woke from his hut to find that the Imperials held the head, and was defended by an elite blade. Ruosti went to take the head back, and who should appear to aid the Empire? None other than the Rhyme. Ruosti managed to sleep the blade, but not before he could call centurions, pinning him in and falling to the bashing giant with his giant heavy axes. Ruostis frustration and ire erupted within him anew at the giant.
Satisfaction came at last, when Ruosti managed to put the matter to bed once and for all. He defeated the Rhyme in combat, and shortly after words reached his ears that the Rhyme had not returned to the lands, forever.

|
RoleChapter 11 Leadership and Masonry Added Thu Aug 8 17:05:21 2013 at level 51:Ruosti has been Drillmaster of Battle, and a Stonemason of the Paragon for some time now and there has been many challenges and victories along the way.
To begin, the Emperor Kraldinor passed away of old age, and with him went the truce between the Empire and village. Ruosti feels the same as Brizlin. The Empire is foolish to have broken the Truce and if it is war they want, they will feel the strength of the Village. The challenge can only strengthen the Villagers.
During this time, however, many Villagers stopped stepping from their huts. Brizlin and Ruosti discussed at length culling those from the Village who did nothing but occupy a hut. As fate would have it, things seemed to work themselves out naturally as many of these Villagers took their own lives, while others became more visible. To add to this, many younger men and women were brought into the Village, adding a great deal of youth and optimism to the War.
Recently, Ruosti completed his work as a stonemason and titled it Obliteration At Bay. The work is symbolic of the destructive truth behind magic and how Ruosti believes it was given to mortals by the creators as a means for them to destroy with, which would have already happened were it not for the work of the BattleRagers. Upon its completion, even Ruosti himself was amazed at its depth and detail.
In his latest discussion with Ysaloerye, she brought him over to her forge and began discussing with him the art of smithing and how it works in with her faith. Ruosti was quite intrigued as not only was it a privilege to learn both sides but it meant progressing in the religion. She told him how this was a step toward becoming the Voice of the Paragon, something only one had accomplished before. Ruosti felt intensely motivated to learn this new facet and become the Voice for Ysaloerye.

|
RoleChapter 12 Smithing and Masonry Added Thu Aug 22 09:46:54 2013 at level 51:Ruosti has traveled about and researched what he could about blacksmithing as the Paragon has asked of him. He has spent much time considering the processes and how it compares to being a stonemason.
Both smithing and stonemasonry are metaphors for how one approaches life. Stonemasonry to Ruosti is how one uses their inner fire, vision and will to mold his life, the world and key events around him. Just as the forces of the earth, such as heat, pressure and the elemental forces mold the stone of the earth and just how a mason of the Paragon molds the stone.
Ruosti sees many similarities in smithing, however, there are some differences. One such difference is that while stonemasonry is more about shaping the fundamental elements of his life, just as stone is the backbone of the world, blacksmithing is about creating things of use, whether they are weapons, armor or tools. These things can be made of the finest materials, but, in unskilled hands are still worthless. In this difference Ruosti sees smithing more about shaping the people around him. Just as in his duties as Drillmaster he must work the Villagers into tools of War. However, they are useless if they are under poor command or if they arent trained how to utilize their skills properly.
The process of smithing, and how it relates to life, Ruosti has also given much thought to. He understands that raw ore is smelted to remove its impurities, and cooled into an ingot of refined metal. This is similar to how a smith of the Paragon must strive to remove unwanted qualities from those people he seeks to use in accomplishing his goals.

|
RoleChapter 13 Smithing and Masonry Continued Added Thu Aug 22 09:48:32 2013 at level 51:Coal is then used as fuel to heat the forge. Great bellows blow air through the forge to incinerate the coal and create high temperatures. The ingot is then heated in the coals. Elements of the coal are absorbed into the heated metal, which if the coal is pure, it will strengthen the metal further. If the coal is full of impurities, it will pollute the metal and it too will be weak. The coal is like the motivations of a smith of the Paragon. They must be strong enough to burn hot inside the smith, giving him the fuel to shape his tool and complete his task. Also, like the coal, his motivations must be pure and for the right reason, else they will only distract and weaken his end result goal.
The metal is then shaped, honed and sharpened while hot and malleable. Once that is done, it is then quenched in water. If the metal is indeed pure, the water will cool and harden it into a finely worked finished tool. If the metal is impure, then the quenching will reveal the impurities and the metal will become brittle and worthless. For the smith of the Paragon, once the impurities have been removed and his subject is ready to be molded, he must shape and craft his tool into what he desires. This is similar to the Mason where he imposes his will to mold stone into the desired form. The quenching serves as the final strengthening of the tool. In addition to this, it is also like a final test to ensure that there are no hidden weaknesses that will fail the smith at the wrong time.

RoleChapter 14 Teachings in Action Added Thu Aug 22 09:50:31 2013 at level 51:Ruosti has recently found himself dealing with many issues Fortress related, and he can sense that it is growing into a distraction, most especially for some Villagers the Fort considers wicked. Bujoch is one Villager in particular that he has received many complaints about. Ruosti has decided to handle the situation like a follower of the Paragon should for both the smithing and masonry aspects. First, he decided to set the events in a manner suitable to him. He did this by writing a letter to both the Village and the Fortress outlining the state of affairs between both cabals and what would be deemed acceptable behavior and what would not be.
Now that this is set he will turn his attention to the Villagers, Bujoch in particular. Ruosti likes Bujoch and thinks he has been a good warrior for the Village. However, he is somewhat undisciplined. In smith terms, Ruosti sees him as a blade that kills and kills nearly anything. He needs a blade that kills magi. Like any smith, he hates to see a blade go to waste and he knows the Fortress is trying to exploit any weakness in him, so there can be none. The stage he set with the letter will serve as a quenching for Bujoch. Either he will abide by his command and become stronger and more focused on the true purpose of their war, or he will not and Ruosti will be forced to discard him.
