Chapter 4

I dreaded when my father would leave. He was the only light in my dark home.
was a half-breed and a bastard child, but that was not that hard part in
life. When my father left for the sea, my siblings would lock me up in a
closet, and hardly feed me. They would skip school and go off with the thugs
of Arkham. They became petty pick-pockets, robbing nuns visitors to the
city. I loved the university, but they would not allow me to go. They knew
I would tell on them. They were a disgrace to my father. They would feast
on cakes and cookies and throw me the salty scraps of fish. I hated the
fish, but I would not lower myself to their level.

When Papa returned home from sea, he would take me out to Candis and let me
have whatever I wanted.Sometimes I would eat two whole chocolate cakes. I
was so thin and frail. My face was so pale against my black hair - I almost
looked dead. I could see the sorrow in his eyes when he looked at me.

I didnt always have the nightmares. I know, I never had the best life, but
at least it was a life without the nightmares. My father always made things
better.I was the youngest, and his favorite. There were ten of us bastard
children. Yes, I say bastard. My parents were never married. They could
not find bard to marry such a couple. My father was of a good heart but he
could not resist my mother. She was an evil temptress.She was evil, but
beautiful. Her eyes could put any man into a trance. Sometimes I think that
is why the dark ones ruined our family.They could smell her evil sent.

My father met her while selling his days catch in Hamsah Mutaz.He was a
fisherman and worked hard all his life.Looking at him you wouldnt know he
had the purest of souls. His scruffy beard, rough hands, messy brown hair
and the smell of fish about him, I miss him so.I especially miss his eyes.
They were the clearest of blue.You could see into his soul, the light that
radiated from them. He was a wonderful father.

I almost wonder if my mother was a prostitute. They run ramped in her home
city. Her long silvery hair always smelt so sweet, but there was no
sweetness in her soul. Her eyes, large and oval swirled with an array of
violet hues. She gave all my brothers and sisters the same eyes. I think
she also gave them the same soul. I was different. I had the eyes of my
father.

When I was born, he knew I was special.He looked into my large shinning
blue eyes and saw himself, not a half-breed. He named me Zuleikae Kazan,
meaning brilliant and lovely. At my birth, my mother had complications. She
lost her power to speak and was not able to move her right arm and right leg.
father says she was too old to be having a child, and I was a miracle
sent by the gods.

Mother never recovered and my siblings who were much older hated me for it.
She could not nurse me, and father had to spend what little money we had to
get me fresh milk. I am glad not have drank the milk of a drow. My oldest
sister had to leave school to care for me and my mother, but I was cared for
little.

My father would often be out to sea for a month at a time. There wasnt much
market in Arkham, so he would travel to Hamsah Mutaz and sell his fish.What
he brought home would be little more than bait.We would have to salt it and
store it for when he was gone on his long trips.

I wonder if he was ever happy with his life. I wonder if I will be happy
with mine.

Chapter 2

No family would take me in considering I was a half-breed. I was lost.I
went to the University to try and find my place. The professor was kind
enough to give me a place to stay in exchanged for excellent marks. I
consumed myself with knowledge.I spent most of my time in the Library,
reading of ancient stories and old magic. I interviewed everyone in the
city, trying to find information. I wanted to know of all spells and skills.
potions and herbs history and religion. The bard guild guardian was my
favorite. I was only a few steps from the bard guild, and she would come to
visit me daily in the library. She would bring me ware wolf cookies and sing
me songs. Her songs were not happy but eerie in nature, but I embraced every
note. We spoke a lot of History and Religion, especially. She told me of
the evils of chaos, the imperials and outlanders who embrace it. I grew
distaste for them as our friendship grew. Although my heart had faded from
the light, I knew I still had nobility and the bard help me understand order
and reason.

I do not remember much of what happened the night my family died. Papa went
to bed and my eldest brother grabbed me and threw me in the closet. He
locked the door and left. I slept so hard, with the comfort of knowing Papa
was home. I knew they would not beat me while he was home and when I awoke,
I could go to Candis. All I remember is the screaming. They were all
screaming so loud. I cried and wished the screaming to stop. I cried for
all of them. Then everything was quiet. I tried so hard with my large drow
like ears to hear what was going on, but there wasnt a sound. I pressed my
head against the door and closed my eyes, but nothing. I began to shake, the
terror consumed me. Then, I heard a click. Someone was unlocking the
closet.My heart was pounding and my hands were clammy. I whispered to my
Papa, thinking he had come to rescue me. When the door opened it was not my
Papa, but a creature of the night. It was the vampire.He cocked his head
and looked at me. He came down to bite me and I raised my arm to shield
myself.I passed out.

I awoke two days later.The Captain of the Guard had come to investigate. I
looked around my home and saw all of their corpses. They died with looks of
terror.The guard told me I had been bitten, but the rosary on my wrist must
have scared the beast away. He took me to the healer, but she did not know
how to cure this sort of wound.I was changed.My eyes darkened and two
silver streaks sprout from my hair, framing my face. The drow in me had been
released. I could smell the sent of my mother about me. I knew then my
heart would be forever changed.I knew I could not be like my father, the
human with a good soul.Thats when the nightmares started. I was only ten
years old.

I stayed at the University until my thirtieth year. It was time for me to
choose my profession in life, and I could only think of being able to play
and sing like my friend the guild guardian. I told my friends I would return
to visit and show my progress. I ventured out into the world, to the city of
Galadon to begin my studies. I took with me the knowledge, discipline and
wisdom I had learned in the Arkham University and the hope of living up to my
name and becoming brilliant. Becoming more like my father, for he was
brilliant in his own way.
