Chapter 6

"I told you Noviask, I TOLD you to watch what you said!" A flurry of hair and
nails flew at Noviask like a murder of ravens seeking blood. "Youre throwing
it all away! I told you to be careful, I told you to pay attention to
politics, HAD YOU JUST WAITED YOU WOULD BE EMPEROR!"

Something inside Noviask snapped - a man pushed to the edge, he had just
taken the life of the former friend Kraldinor... the berating from his mother
was the last step. A clawed unholy backhand cracked like a whip and Noviasks
mother flew back to the floor.

"I will still be Emperor!"

His ragged mother surged with magic as she used it to strengthen herself as
she rose. She was laughing softly as she wiped blood from her face.

"The Imperial Lords will see the truth - that aging flower boy made this
choice to stop me from taking the Throne." Her laughter grew. "I know I
wouldn't win the vote, I'm the only untouched from the Purple Lotus
slavery... but I wouldn't sit idle as their weakness grew like a cancer. I
made a stand for what was right."

She was gasping for air, unable to hold herself up as her laughter became
maniacal.

Over the last few years, Noviask had grown angry - it was eating away at his
resolve. You could point to single instances but in reality it was everything
that drove him to this. The knowledge that life wasn't going the correct way
was edging like a grindstone at his soul. No matter what he knew and pursued,
it felt like it was in the distance.

She whispered through her uncontrollable laughter "You know nothing,
Noviask..."

Noviask raised his pitchfork in rage, the lightning caressing his demon
twisted paws. His mother stopped laughing immediately and grinned so
shockingly devious that Noviask hesitated. In a puff of demonic souls, she
faded from sight...leaving a lingering trail of dust on the ground. Noviask
leaned down and sat in silence while he looked at it and stayed thinking for
a long while.

The dust made a symbol...the symbol of his guildmaster: the mark of the
Discordians.

Chapter 5

Noviask Djhuaro rested upon the lacquered coffin in his Sect Hall of Black
Magic. It was his now for he had risen to become Dreadlord of the Empire - an
act of no surprise as it was rightfully his. Time and time again he had
proven himself while the others faltered or even committed suicide. None came
close to his dedication or had intimate knowledge on how to handle the
politics involved.. the history lessons from his Mother had paid off.

Absently twiddling a shovel in place with his tail, Noviask looked around the
room that seemed more suited to be used as graveyard storage. Then there was
the questions - it made him smirk. "Damn did I hate those." He defensively
protected his hands from the imaginary ruler that was coming to make him pay
for such rude behavior... but in all honesty he did loathe them. Knowledge is
not repetition nor is it gained by repetition unless you are some lame monkey
- lack of intelligence would never find its way into his Sect again.

As he turned to leave the hall, Noviask sat wondering about something that
still bothered him. His guildmaster had shunned his requests, but why?
Curiosity would be kept at bay for now but he wanted to know more of the
Discordians and speak to the dark knight. He would continue to pursue the
unknown.

Chapter 4

Noviask was resting in the Brotherhood of the Abyss of the great Hamsah
Mu'tazz. The grim hall of carved standstone and tall windows of smoked glass
had become his home and this eve, he was thinking quietly to himself. The
ghostly haze still clung to his body, a stark reminder of his recent loss -
his now third unholy weapon to be destroyed, his attempts of a start towards
larger power was proving difficult. He ran through the moments in his
memory...he knew he saw the assassin in the void - it couldn't have been
long, mere hours, he had made sure of it as he had teleported across the
world not long ago, but apparently luck was on the side of his enemies yet
again. One strike to the throat from behind and it was over.

It hadn't been his plan to sit among the children of the land for long - the
seat of the Dreadlord awaited his rise. Not a single member of the Black
dared challenge him and he had the support of the High Priest and Emperor.
Noviask was even near reputation to learn the teachings of controlling ice
into his weapon, siphoning the life from foes as he fought. And yet, his
Mother always said....rise to power when prepared.

It was time to take action - nothing brash, Noviask wasn't driven to
rage...at least for long. No, it was time to swing the favor back to his own.
He needed more knowledge, he needed a great teacher - he needed the Dark
Knight. The most honored of his guild, little was known of his guildmaster's
past. This ominous figure hidden behind tattered veils had done much to hide
all prying into his past as Noviask had done with his own - even Mother knew
little of him. The only facts hidden deep within the library was that he was
a servant of the Demon Princes and the symbol that burned upon his upper
cheek, just below one of his beady eyes, was the mark of the Discordians. He
wanted to know more.

He would continue on, always without end despite any upsets... but life had
just begun as his thirst for knowledge and power grew daily.

Chapter 3

Birds circled in the clouds above... a small dance of dots in the morning sky
that were growing in number and size as time passed. Carrion birds had a way
of knowing where to find death.

A dying man choked up diseased blood as he watched in despair the combat
continuing before him. As a man of the wilds, he had come to the Palace
seeking retribution and revenge for the damage done to the Tree... but the
rumors of a new vibrant dark knight had created a joint venture between
common friends to assault the Empire to see this new evil. A member of the
Village continued to fight with Noviask but their kneecap had been
shattered...it was only a member of time as they fought off the endless fury
of deadly claws.

The ranger gave up trying to rise and took a moment to watch his new foe -
his dark-blue eyes seemed almost frantic with the night's possibilities. A
dark hilarity covered his face in the midst of combat. It's a face of a
hatefully happy man, a face that radiated a horribly handsome warmth, a face
to send children crying to their mommies. A fiery grin that makes mothers
grab their children, a grin that makes women feel premature labor pains. With
each slice of the spear, this dark knight changed from his normally and
reserved presence to a fiend enjoying his mission with a passion in every
step. He truly came alive and awake - his librarian qualities sheadded with
his true lust for blood.

Noviask turned his back to the villager as they slumped over, holding in
horror their own bowels that were spilling forth. A shadowy soul begin to rip
apart from the body and an eerie scream echoed through the Imperial grounds
as it was siphoned into the unholy spear.... but Noviask's attention was on
the last one alive. The unholy spear hovered for a moment above the ranger's
head - Noviask's extensive knowledge told him what was coming. He spoke
calmly and softly as his bloodlust faded "Know that you will falter, know
that your soul's knowledge will be used against you, know that you fight the
future Dreadlord and know true despair"...

The ranger's life ended without a strike, the plague stopped his heart.

Chapter 2

"Noviask always felt....distant. Dark. He never hung out with the other
kids... as a kid, you may see him smile but later on - nothing."

The young man was getting nervous about the door being blocked but tried to
ignore it as he continued. "He was gifted with magic...well, wait no, he had
the gift but his mother beat him into perfection. He'd constantly be using it
to his advantage in whatever he did. The first kid to complain about it being
unfair, Ms Djhuaro tore through his cheek with the ruler..."

The young man decided he was done and rose from his seat with a fake smile,
motioning to the door but the man in black didn't move. Not really sure how
to handle this situation, the man paced.

"Ok, ok.... Noviask also was really into everything about the Empire. He read
books and spent a lot of time with the recruiter who passed through town. He
was fascinated with history... well, yet again, probably from his mother Ms
Djhuaro. She never let us forget anything! Kept repeating 'The knowledge of
history is everything!'....ok, I answered you - can I go now?"

The man in black rose from leaning on the door but as the young man
approached, he grabbed him by the shirt. His soft black gloves began to waver
on contact, slowly shifting into a horrifyingly familiar pair of claws. The
magical shroud faltered as Noviask whispered softly over the man's terrified
screams, "You forgot to mention mother was an illusionist....and she taught
me the most valuable lesson.." Noviask thrust his claws into the man's
stomach. "...that knowledge is the key to your protection, your power and
your fate. When the historians ask where the Emperor came from, there will be
no history to recall to use against me."

As the young man gurgled blood and slumped to the ground, Noviask walked out
to find the other classmates as he whispered, "Don't talk bad of mother."

Chapter 1

"Noviask was born from a demoness in an unholy union."

The young man shelving the food stocks of Hamsah Mutazz's butcher seemed to
age as he reminisced of his childhood friend. An odd sense of terror filled
his eyes as he shakingly carried slabs of meat across the room.

"No one could think of that cunt *gulp* as anything else. She was a horror of
a teacher - it's rumored she even killed a child for not doing his work!"
Trying to keep his body occupied from shaking, the man started to haphazardly
hack away at a leg of a lamb with a cleaver. "And how she ensorcelled that
librarian to marry her, it's the work of demons and nothing else. Such a
sweet man... he died not long ago. Some say a stroke but it's probably
because the whore got tired of him."

The young man kept hacking away at the lamb that now had become nothing but
mush as his swings became quicker. "She used to beat us with that ruler...
and oh did she beat Noviask. 'Stand up straight!' 'Hands at your sides!' 'A
fool could do this!' 'I'll cut that tail of yours if you get this wrong!'
He...he never cracked. There was a bet at one point that he'd lunge out and
kill her with those claws of his but after a year..." He stopped hacking at
the meat and began fumbling trying to light a thin cigar. "Noviask locked up
and went silent. He never said anything even under threat of the ruler from
his screaming mother. Gods know what happened to him at home... but damned if
we didn't learn a lot. I can't get her horrible face out of my mind when I'm
even counting." He took a small puff of smoke from the thin cigar and ran a
shaking hand through his hair.

"Tell me more of Noviask," the man dressed in black asked as he leaned
against the exit door - a fact the young man had undoubtedly noticed.
