Chapter 13

Interesting times, and many opportunities. The Magistrate Perr has gotten in
my way. I demanded an apology of the Provost, and recieved half of one. I
made clear what would not be tolerated, and this Perr overstepped his bounds.
I will see him broken for that, and the Spire put into its proper place.

It is intolerable to me that one so arrogant about his meagre worth, and so
unwilling to do his sworn duty, be allowed to hold a place of any value in
my spire. I will see him removed from that.

It is intolerable to me that the Spire so closly allies itself with the fortress
that its Magistrates feel free to come and slaughter my centurions in Balator
and my Lands rather than tend to their duties.

It is intolerable to me that my soldiers are slain in cities they are hired
to protect for me, and that they make no effort to protect, instead seeking
to hunt me in my own lands.

And what is intolerable to me will not be tolerated.

The Provost will do his duty to me, or he too will be broken.

I will tolerate no slight upon me or mine.

Chapter 12

Qalita, one of the more interesting divines it has been my pleasure to own, approached
me with an interesting plan. She proposed that we start breeding our own soldiers rather
than relying solely on the bloodoath, as a means to better promote our civilization.
She detailed a plan that may have a chance to succeed, of gathering seed from the strongest
of our foes and inseminating the best of our soldiers. If it is possible...

I have set things in motion to test this out. If it works, there will be no end to the glory
that I shall bring to my Lord Enlilth.

Chapter 1

Orphan, beggar, street urchin, whore. Thief. This is the pinnacle
of Alannah's life so far. Abandoned right after birth, she was
not one of the fortunate children to find her way to the orphanage
of Balator, or some other sheltered spot. Instead, she was taken
in by a less than desirable in Hamsah, Achmed, who had a bevy of
children he used to fund his lavish lifestyle. Some were taught to
steal, those with nimble fingers and shrewd wits. Others were
taught to beg, often they were broken first to present a more
pitiable sight. Still others were sold for whatever pleasures
might be had from their bodies. None came to him willingly,
nor stayed if they could find any way out. Very few ever made it
out.

Alannah was first given to a young human girl to hold while begging,
the pretense being that this squaling half-breed was actually her
daughter, even though she herself was not even fourteen years old.
When that failed to bring in money, the girl was replaced. The baby
remained the same. When Alannah was a bit older, a child now,
she was taught to beg in her own rights, to steal where she could
not cajole, to sell anything that might be bought. This time
is a merciful blur in her memory, but she recalls nights of
depravity, of pain, of the filth that spews from mortal spirits
upon one another.

These were not good times for Alannah. She survived them.

Older now, and wise to the ways of the world, far too wise for
the adolescent she is. Still one of Achmed's children, though,
still one of the forsaken ones that the scions of the Fortress
did not see in their wars, that the Imperial armies marched
past. There was nothing there to subjugate, nothing there to
use, just broken children.

Knowing that she had to get out, knowing what happened to those
who grew too old, too bold, or thought slyly to squirrel money
away, she learned. There was no way out. Or at least no easy
way out. Quietly she watched, looking for an opportunity.
None came, not for a very long time, and her life grew if anything
worse as she came into the blossom of youth. Now it was not only
the depraved who desired her, it was every man who wanted her lithe
form. Still, it was something she could use.

Chapter 2

A nobleman took an interest in her, wanted her for his own harem.
An offer was made, and accepted, and a sum of gold passed hands,
as did the young whore.

This nobleman was not so cunning as Achmed, not so used to keeping
prisoners, and it was not long before Alannah managed to find her
way free with a small fortune of silver. This silver lasted her
a little while, but the lavish life she fell into ate through what
would have been a lifetime of comfort to a more modest person.

Alannah turned to stealing again, and whoring, and Alannah spent
a few years doing that before she realized she would end her life
as one of the slightly older whores, disease-ridden, destitute,
and ugly. This last was the worst to her, vanity and greed
being intertwined within Alannah's spirit.

Alannah decided to join one of the thieve's guilds prevalent in
Thera, and picked one without firm leadership. And the Imperial
Palace calls, there is a vacuum there that Alannah had heard
talked about by some of her clients.

It seems Alannah's path is set, for now.

Alannah is an opportunist above all, selfish and greedy. She has
a strong streak of vanity, and a cautious nature. She will learn
to fight because she has to, and learn to fight as well as she
can, but she prefers not to have to, and she will do her best to
play the political game that is so prevalent in the Imperial Palace.

Alannah is a scion of the sphere of Greed, and this drives her actions.
She will follow Enlilth, and seek out as much power as she can. She
has been one of the powerless, and seen how those who are both holy
and otherwise behave to those who have no power. This is a situation
she will not suffer herself to be in again.

Alannah's only true loyalty is to herself, above all things.

Chapter 3

In my eagerness to please Lord Enlilth, I became foolish. I was not expecting to draw the
least sliver of his attention so soon, but I went after the druid. The fire seeds
he called upon me were enough that two prayers ended my life.

I don't charge in blindly again, not for anything or anyone, that is my death.

Chapter 4

When I was young, I ran in my eagerness to try and please the Kingbreaker. I died,
painfully. Now that I am older, I will find something to prove my worth to the Kingbreaker.
I will gain control of the Voralian City guild, then I will approach him again in
supplication. That is my goal for now.

Chapter 5

Zaraeus might have some feelings for me. I will make use of that. I fell to
Onya not four hours ago, and Zaraeus made a comment about finding my "vulnerability"
attractive. That's the last time any one sees me in such a state, and that's
a comment the Blade will live long enough to regret.

I gather coins for Voralian, but I will need to either top Vallinane's donations or
else wait out his death. He must be old already, but I wonder how long he will live.
The incessant need for money grows, I must start selling things I think, venoms to
any who will pay.

Chapter 6

Foolish of me. I broke Imperial Law, and found a more merciful result than I
would have expected. I struck at a scion shapeshifter while she fought Maran and
village, my hatred for her and my recent evasion of her in Hamsah blinding me.
The first, and only mistake, I will ever make in this regard. My head rules
me, not my heart, not my anger, not even my greed. I will cool myself, be
deliberate in my actions, and there will be no more mistakes.

Shadow Lord beckons, the spot is still empty, and my Lord Enlilth will be harsh
if there are any more failures.

Chapter 7

Today I proved something. I led a strike against the Fortress, cajoling the other
Shadows, the Divine and the Blade to try a strike. It ended with one death, Kohi, who
foolishly fought too long against the Watcher, but the Orb in our possession.
That death is well worth the price to prove we can take the orb, though we are
not yet strong enough to hold the orb. We will be in time, though, as
our numbers grow, out strength coalesces, and I shall prove myself time and again
to my Lord Enlilth.

Chapter 8

Today, Rken had the temerity to offer me disrespect, naming me irritating because
I gathered money for our coffers. I cast her down to Oathed, and she went even further,
yawning in my face.

This one will be hunted when I am Shadow Lord, we have no place for disrespect
within our ranks, for those who think themselves more important than their betters.

Chapter 9

Today, Larkans was warranted. On inquiry, he admitted readily to breaking IMperial
law. I took him to our sect hall, demoted him, and bid him fall on his knife to
rectify his error. I must admit, it felt good, commanding another to die and
being told "Yes, sister."

Chapter 10

Today has been a day among days.

I am Shadow Lord now, and blessed of my Lord Enlilth with his mark.
Successful beyond my wildest dreams so far, and with so much ahead of me to
grasp for. I need whores, dark-elven ones my Lord bid me, to populate the
streets of Voralian City.

It will be as my Lord wishes.

The throne is mine now. I am Empress of Thera.

I will not tire of those words. Not now, not for the rest of my life.

I grew cocky with the rush, the power, went to fight two nexuns without proper preparation or care.
One mistake I allow myself, that is all. This Empire of mine will grow, will be strong.

First matter is training and weeding out the fools.
Second matter is building up the forces into a cohesive group.
Third matter is to grow and expand.

I will seek out alliances where I can. The Spire is a logical choice, of course, but they are
mostly fools. The village, I know the Commander well and for a long time, a truce of sorts should
suffice.

The world is in for interesting times.
