Chapter 11

"The battles of the Acolyte are fought within the province of the mind."

A phrase oft repeated by Illanthos, but most who hear it do not fully grasp
the depth of his meaning. The Acolytes are powerful healers of mind and body,
but they are also the Light's mortal emissaries and diplomats.

For Illanthos, understanding is power. While his anthropological studies are
long behind him, his scholarly years have given him the tools required to
glean insight into the drives, tendencies, virtues, and vices of those he
interacts with granting him a subtle power over the nature and outcomes of
his interactions.

To those bearing even a scrap of virtue, Illanthos is simply so pleasant and
understanding these individuals feel guilty when they act against him.
Artifacts pilfered from him prompty return to his possession, a murderous
Harbinger sensing Order on his spirit stays his hand and instead develops a
strong friendship, and Nexans show the Children of the Light additional
courtesies despite their pursuit of balance.

Amongst those consumed wholly by vice, however, Illanthos strikes at the ties
that bind the tribes of the Shadow together, seeking to foster isolation among
the Darkness, where the Light holds unity. Uttering simple, pointed, observations
he sought to place the Anathema Kurbrawn beyond readmission into the Empire,
where he might languish in Scion Lackeydom. Yarglen's skill and devotion
clearly outclasses Eleagra's, so why is it that she still occupies the
position of War Master? He picks at the delicate tapestry that is the Empire,
seeking to unravel it during it's critical hour.

Among his own children, the defenders of the Light, he is brash and bold, even
comically so as he seeks to rouse their spirits and stoke their courage,
instilling hope even in the face of great misfortune.

Illanthos disdains the use of deceit, for in his hands the truth is a far
more powerful tool.

Chapter 10

Illanthos' concept of utopia is as such:

All races, living harmoniously in the Light, at one with Thera. With no
wickedness in the land, the need to isolate ourselves from one another using
walls of physical and mental artifice is vanquished.

Individuals will have freedom to pursue whichever endeavors they may desire,
so long as none come to harm as a result. Coin and barter are obsolete, for
all who are in need may turn to their neighbour and find deliverance. The
people of Thera living sustainably with the land, with magic to reduce the
burden.

Freedom through structure, peace, and mutual benevolence.

Chapter 9

On Establishment and Poverty:

The means by which our establishments attempt to deal with poverty - bread
and circuses -are not a treatment of the problem, they are an aggravation of
the issue. The giving of charity is a blessed act, but those at the soup
kitchens today will surely return tomorrow, lacking the means by which they
may elevate themselves above their squalor. In this fashion, the blessed act,
taken of pure intent, does fail to strike at the root of the problem. All
resources to aid the poor are thus contributed to providing a patch solution
rather than a cure for the festering heart of the matter.

That is most surely not to say that I am opposed to charity. Far from it, I
give of myself freely to those who are in need. My primary concern is that
charity is too unreliable - as it has been utilized to this day by our
establishments -, as a means by which poverty may be solved. It often does
little more than temporarily abate, and ultimately, prolong, the suffering of
the poor. If everyone were far more charitable, or the poor were far less
numerous, charity would exist as as more sustainable solution for present-day
Thera.

Sadly, this is not the case. Though I have done all that I may to encourage
charity amongst those I walk alongside, it is surely not enough to cure the
problem. When most seek to give, they give a meager coin or two, and the
charity ends there.

The proper measure by which this societal illness be solved is to reconstruct
society to an extent where poverty itself is an impossibility. We must take
the simple, blessed, act of giving, and through a coordinated effort, see to
it that its grace will be felt in full force across all of Thera.

Each man, woman, and child are of incalculable worth.
Each possess the capacity to change the world.
Each hold the potential for good in their hearts.
Each may find a place in this world, if we would but only give them the
chance.

But how?

Chapter 8

On Charity and Favors:

Time and again have I spoke these words unto those I grace with my blessings
and wisdom.

"The proper way to repay a favor is simply not to. Pass it on instead. Let my
kindness bring forth a hundred hundred future kindnesses, as the good deed is
eternally paid forward."

Charity calls to charity, nothing less will suffice to honour the act.

Think not of charity as a set of scales to be balanced, but rather as a
movement that touches the hearts and minds of those all across Thera. Give
not of what you own, but rather give of yourself (perhaps your time or
wisdom) that others gain the strength to do so as well, and carry the sharing
deed forward.

In but this small gesture, may you touch the hearts of many.

Chapter 1

The musings of the mind leave for many possible paths and opportunities, from
them flow the wellsprings of action, ripe with potential. Many presume that
their methods are superior, from Tribunal Utilitarianism, to Imperial
Conquest. There is however, a rare bunch, those merely seeking to get by as
they would in life, who do not possess a firm philosophy. These indifferent
souls are more easily swayed by external forces, possessing little internal
moral resistance. Ripe for corruption.

Or... well...

I suppose it goes both ways then, doesnt it?

Greed is a powerful motivating factor, but so too is the promise of
reciprocity. One good turn deserving another, creating a cycle of mutual
benevolence. The challenge, to this regard, is creating an environment
wherein the individual feels one good turn not only deserves another, but
also WILL RESULT in another. A collective of prosocial and benevolent peers
is thus required to form new instances of benevolence.

Chapter 2

Illanthos Elurien is a budding anthropological scholar, turned priest upon
the realization that social reform is a delicate process, one that can be
greatly expedited by a supernal touch. "See now, the power of morality!" One
might exclaim to the huddled masses, as their wounds miraculously mend. "Know
an eternity of paradise upon your passing!" One might pontificate.

His methods and social experiments run the gamut, from evangelical
proselytizing, to philosophical debates, to humble charity, all seeking to
determine the ideal method of bringing about a benevolent society devoted to
the Light. To this end, he acknowledges the power of multiple gods across
multiple pantheons to entice individuals from various cultures towards
Benevolence. He thus favours no single Lord or Lady of the Light, seeking
to serve the Light itself in an eclectic mix of virtues gathered in his
travels and studies.

Chapter 3

Illanthos' Personal Tenets and Beliefs

All are capable of serving the light. None are too far gone to be incapable
of benevolence, but many are too staunchly resistant for redemption to be
likely. Focus your efforts where the greatest good can be done.

Respect and grace must be given to all creatures, both in life and death. To
do otherwise is to sow the seeds of bitterness and malice.

Be prepared to do what you must in the service of the Light. Sacrifice of
time, physical goods, or even one's own life may all be called for.

Know when to be the open palm of mercy or the purifying fist of retribution.
Guide others with your words and actions, take a life only when it is
necessary. For every soul redeemed from the Darkness is another candle
burning for the Light.

Know thyself. Without clarity of purpose, it is far too easy to be led from
the path of the righteous.

Reflect on your actions, for a virtuous life requires diligence to maintain.

Humility is key. Demand nothing of others what you would not be already
willing to do yourself.

See to it that Justice follows in your wake. Be fair in your dealings, and
seek to correct the wrongs made by others in theirs.

Chapter 4

How can one best show reverence to the Light?
Is it by offering up words to the Heavens?
How would such prayers serve the Light?

Illanthos is one who believes that only actions truly speak. One must
actively guide, protect, and teach to pay the Light it's due. While prayer
may serve to demonstrate understanding and awareness, it is only through
one's deeds is the strength of one's devotion visible.

As a devoted adherent to the Light, Illanthos' actions in Its service are his
worship, and all of Thera, his temple.

Nothing less would be suitable.

It is for this reason that Illanthos chose the Fortress of the Light over the
Inn of the Eternal Star. While the Inn would've provided him with connections
and information for his research, he felt the Light call him to action, and
he did so respond.

Chapter 5

Illanthos' years among the valiant men and women of the Fortress have seen
him presented with many challenges, both of a martial and spiritual bent. In
the former, he has proven his merit in the defense of the Fortress with both
fist and prayer, much to the frustration of foes such as Kymbal. In the
latter, he has engaged with verbal duels with the likes of Scions, Imperials,
and most passers-by who he notices are in the process of committing a
misdeed.

In addition, he has spent many months speaking on the matters of
peace, harmony, duty, and redemption with dozens of Therans, each from
different walks of life, some Nexan, Herald, Outlander, Imperial. His current
project is guiding the young ex-necromancer Xongeera along the path to
redemption, but he also has ideas for an agency to help the poor up off the
streets and become self-sufficient.

Chapter 6

Illanthos' tenets have not risen from isolation. He borrows from the wisdom
of the Gods of the Light along his path, drawing on aspects of their
teachings as he spreads the Light's Word within Thera.

While he ultimately serves the Light, he respects the Gods of the Light as
the manifestation of the holy virtues exhibited by mortality. In his respect
for the Gods of the Light, he seeks offerings to sacrifice at their shrines,
either as manifestations of the virtuesthese Gods hold dear, or as the
direct antithesis to such virtues, as he offers them up to divine
destruction.

An example of one such sacrifice he has made was a Blade of Corruption,
offered up to divine destruction at the shrine of Lady Baerinika in respect
of Purity.

Chapter 7

To err is only natural in one's journey through our mortal lives. We are
beings shaped by experience, not born to a path, and thus all that we are
must come from that which we are exposed to. It is true, yes, that each
race possesses certain tendencies and predilections, but these are merely a
template from which the stylus of action can easily deviate from.

Understand then, that when one errs one must not seek to punish, but rather
guide the wayward soul back into the flock, teach it the meaning of the error
and in doing so see to it that it has at least served a purpose - that the
sacrifice of an unerring moment permit a future of such moments.

It is so, then, with all manners of the Lost. They become Lost in action, not
in birth, and must through action be redeemed. Precious few find redemption
on their own, for they require a guide to show them the way, and they rarely
think to look within themselves to find the Light that dwells within all of
us to illuminate their path.

Do not hesitate, then, to reveal to the Lost the rare kindnesses they give to
the world. Oftentimes they presume themselves to be beyond redemption and
thus would have what they may in this mortal span, to provide cold comfort to
their eternal agony in their afterlife. To show them that Light is present in
each soul may give them heart to reconsider their lot in life, that all is
not truly lost, just as they are not forever Lost if they would but listen.

You must be, then, both a beacon to guide them, as well as a mirror by which
they may see themselves in their true light. Reveal to them the harsh
realities of their actions, the better alternatives, the peace they may have
in both the Temporal and Supernal realms... If they would but listen.
